Melbourne, February 29: Australian opener Matthew Hayden has admitted being "insensitive" in making the 'obnoxious little weed' remark against Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh but said it was not against the spirit of cricket and did warrant a reprimand.

"I can see that my comments were insensitive but they were not intended to be denigrating and especially not contrary to the spirit of cricket," Hayden said.

"The cricket environment I have grown up with is probably a little bit different from today," the 37-year-old cricketer was quoted as saying by the Daily Telegraph.

Hayden expressed anguish at being reprimanded by Cricket Australia for his behaviour.

"It saddens me that my employer has to discipline me for my behaviour," Hayden said.

Hayden, in an interview to Brisbane Radio, had called Harbhajan "obnoxious little weed" and also invited young paceman Ishant Sharma "into a ring" for a boxing bout.

CA rules do not allow its contracted players to make comments against opponent players or the Board and hence charged Hayden with breach of its code of behaviour, although let off with only a reprimand.

Your Arrogance by Gupta on 01 Mar 2008

Hi AI,Yes, you missed several items in your list! Please add, India is first in ICT and Technology. India is first in the production, Tea, Coffee (not Brazil mate!), Sugar (not Aussie mate!), Coconut (not any island mate!) and Milk (not Aussie mate!) and second in Wheat production, rice production, cotton, vegetables and fruits. Of course, you know only crap (because like it). Good on you mate, if you had studied beyond Grade 10, probably you might have some basic knowledge about economics and geography! No time for me waste any more for you guys.

Arrogant is Aussie culture by Gupta on 01 Mar 2008

Hi Waxer,You say yours is the first country in the world. In what sense? - by highest number of diverse in proportion to the population? by highest number of crimes proportions to the population? by highest number of corporate frauds? by highest number of using "F**K words in the world? You cultureless arrogrants what you know about India or any many other countries. Of course, you just eat pigs, crockodiles, and beast. You may naturally have the same sense!

arrogant? by waxer on 01 Mar 2008

I didn't say it was the first country, I said it was the best. There is a high rate of divorce, yes- but that is because we don't force people to stay together who don't get on. We don't burn our unwanted brides either. Highest crimes? what a load of rubbish- I can go anywhere in Australia and feel safe, our crime rate is extremely low- probably a product of noone starving as in certain countries. Pigs are yummy, crockodiles not so nice- beasts? depends what beast. I notice you stay away from my coments on racism being illegal here, that we have no caste system, free health etc, your "cultured" argument consisted of wild accusations. Anyway-as I said, Indian people are particularly popular here despite the crap you hear in your media and the misinformed bloggers here. People like you and others who try to insult a whole country because of cricket should take a cold shower and relax. Obviously we will take different views of what happened in the cricket- but I am amazd at how many people here and on other newspapers insult our whole country. If you hae a look at the papers here, including the Telegraph. The bloggers may say how sooky your team is, attack Harbajan and even Tendulkar- but you won't see us attacking the Indian people or your country.

apologies by vishal on 03 Mar 2008

hey waxer ..i am an indian and i just wanted you to know that i support your views. and i know i am not alone. Don't the loonies on their board change your perception of us indians. We are not all foolish, whiny, shrill, racists and bereft of any sense of proportion or propriety.

Check your facts Gupta by Al on 01 Mar 2008

Let's see, we know India has 50% of it's population living in poverty. You were oppresed by England for centuries and have a raging hatred against whites. You have the highest Suicide rate, highest Neo Natal Mortality rate, and are the second largest polluter in the world. You have the second largest population in the world and yet can't put together a winning cricket team. You are still working on having toilets. Did I miss anything.

convicts? by waxer on 01 Mar 2008

What is this obsession with calling us convicts? That was 200 years ago. Should I bring up the 6 million people who were killed in your own country by the muslim warlords in the 13th century? How far do you go back? I think it is hilarious that so many Indians think it is an insult to bring up Australia's convict past. Ha Ha- we have the best country in the world. Ask someone who is in your lower caste if they have a better life in Australia or in India? How many people starve or live in poverty in Australia? NONE. We have free medical for ALL people and a social justice system that is the envy of the world. Also- get this through your heads- we are NOT racist and it is in fact against the law to be here- what is your laws on discrimination? Over 50% of the country are immigrants, how many of yours are? shows which country is racist doesn't it? Or does it show which country people from around the world want to go to? Get over this obsession with our convict past-it really is not an insult. Now about the cricket- Harbhajan is a liar- that is the issue- even most Indian people here who are TRYING to insult Australians acknowledge that he did say "monkey"-It was meant as a racist term and THAT is the difference from a sledge. I personally know many Indian people here and they love Australia and we loe them- Just because some of the people in your cricket team are weeds and liars doesn't mean we have to hate each others entire countries!

Harbajan is no angel! by Jolly on 29 Feb 2008

It was Harbajan and Sreesanth who went after Symonds tirelessly in India. The local crowds in Mumbai and Kochi supported them too. Both said, even before the tour that they will 'take it upto' the Aussies. Harbajan's move is premeditated and he IS a repeat offender as found by the Kiwi Judge. He is hot headed and bringing problems to rest of the players and the country. Which Indian wants to be told 'Maa ki' in their face? If that is OK then they can support Bhajji. I think Bhajji is indeed a "Bad Boy' and even a "Mad Boy" since he refuses to learn and is the most punished player in the world for his behaviour. Good luck to the Indian team as they need them with these 'unwanted weeds'constantly bringing trouble to them and to the country's image.

Let the bat do the talking by vinod kamath on 29 Feb 2008

I think we are giving too much importance to 'weed' comment. Hayden also said that we are complaining since we are losing all the matches.I think we should stop reacting to comments and win matches. That will silence the Australians.

Well said! by Joy on 29 Feb 2008

Indians should play the game and win. All these distractions are mere excuses for their lack of performance!

Plan backfired by Dan Dandiker on 03 Mar 2008

Hayden was trying to wind up the Indian team so they lose focus before the ODI final 3 games - but it seeems to have backfired - much better penalty than the limp wristed reprimand with no fine suspension or warning regarding future conduct - he should have let his talent do the talking and made sure he got out to anyone but HarbajanDan - Cambridge

Arrogance is Bad by M JAWAHARLAL on 29 Feb 2008

A for Australia/Arrogrance/Authority in Cricket. Ausis should show their arrogance in game in right spirit; the maturity lies in humility and honest approach. Let every one including Indians inculcate this.

Arrogant Aussie players by Karen Modi on 29 Feb 2008

Aussie players are nothing but arrogran crooks. Since they uneducated (mostly Grade 10 failed) fools, they do not understand what they are saying and behaving. Indian team should ingnore these wild beasts and dirty dingos.

Ignorant Indians by Al on 01 Mar 2008

Karen, you are obviously undeducated yourself making these remarks. Following your logic; Dhoni (cheating) Tendulkar (Tampering) Bhajji (racism) to name a couple of examples, must all be uneducated otherwise there is no excuse for their behaviour. Your slurs are laughable when you compare literate % of people in Australia vs India. India loses hands down. 50% of your country lives in poverty and you are more racist than any other country with your caste's. So Karen, before you sound even more stupid than you already are, think before you write next time.

Grow-up by Fellow Indian on 29 Feb 2008

Hi, wre did you get this information (mostly Grade 10 failed) about the OZs, c'mon Modi grow up, these are just cultural differences. Our abuses against them in our language(Hindi, Bengali....)gets un-noticed coz no one else other than the ppl fromthe sub-continent can understand them. So get over tis crap of calling some one a crook or a wild beast. Myself being a sports-man, I know wat happens in the field, North-Indians abuse in hindi or wat eva is their lingual and so do the southerners and we call ourselves brothers and sisters (at time the abuse goes to heights of abusing ones mother or sister)....wre do we take a stand in there.

Pls wake up by Another Fellow Indian on 29 Feb 2008

I think you have to grow up. No body talking about the on field altercation. The problem here is double standard. When Aussies sledges then it is termed as 'Aussies play hard cricket', but if it is retaliated they should take it as the same way and should not go complain like a child. Why symonds should get offended even Bhajji had said 'Monkey'? At the same time Hayden says Ishant has to take it cool if tell something personally. what is this? is it because they have white skin and propably a white 'P....s'?

Australian cricketers behavior by rihca f on 29 Feb 2008

Since australia have won the world cup 3 times in a row, they think they are superior to all other teams in the world. Alas their onfield and off field behavior gross undervalues their performance and sheds very poor light on their upbringing and their background.Indians should refrain from stooping to australia's level. Indians are very dignified people and always treat their guests and hosts with due respect. But if this respect is assumed as accepting shit, then Indians should show them what they are capable of in their own way.

Dignified India is racism by birth. by Brian on 29 Feb 2008

Except if you are born into the wrong caste class, then India's true Identity is there for the world to see.

Dont Whine by C Krishna on 29 Feb 2008

They don't need to "think" that they are superior -- they actually are superior in terms of cricketing ability. Unless we are able to beat them on the cricket field we would always be branded "whiners" irrespective of who is at fault.

Whiners by Another Fellow Indian on 29 Feb 2008

I agree to disagree. US is the most poweful country. But most of the countries in the world including their strong allies like UK have time again rebutted them.Superiority should give humbleness not the arrogance

It's normal by sujit on 29 Feb 2008

The ancestors of Aussies people were all the anti-socials and criminals who were thrown out from Britain to the barren island as punishment. Hence such behaviour with a guest player is quite normal for them. They only understand the language of tit for tat.

Anti-social criminals or conqured, I know what one I would rather. by Lee on 29 Feb 2008

Very true, but at least Australia can say they were not CONQURED by the English while being UNABLE to throw them out India had to wait till the English gave them back there own country.

truth by vandana on 29 Feb 2008

I live in Australia nd i know of aussie double standarad where Indigeneous( aboriginal) australians are left to perish in reserves with living conditions worse than any beggar in India and then they have the audacity to preach to Indians!! when in fact the population of India is 1.2 billion compared to 20 million aussies...less than the population a single city in india e.g. kolkata. Grow up and look at yourself before you become a monority in your own country with no ability to manufacture and most skilled jobs taken by Indians
