Hayden repeats ‘India a third world country’

Mathew Hayden

Melbourne, November 20: Australia opener Matthew Hayden on Thursday stood by his comment about India being a ‘third world country’ but insisted he never meant to disrespect the nation or its citizens and said by 'third world' he meant a large section of the Indian population that are living below the poverty line.

He also claimed he was fascinated by the diversity of India's culture but feels he was being held at ransom by ‘certain sections of humanity’.

"The politics of cricket, I think, has gone mad. One of the things I love the most about India, is that you walk around the back of the hotel, and there's a man who's selling peanuts on the street for one cent a month, and he holds his head so high, and is so proud, as if he was making $2 million a month.

"It frustrates me that certain sections of humanity want to take someone like myself down, who is a really great admirer of the country, and who has really built his career on the back of the country in a very proud and honoured way," Hayden was quoted as saying by 'The Age'.

"We've had our competitive spats, but I'm sure that's only enhanced the reputation of India. It's made them play better against me, and I've played better against them.

"I stand by what I said. There is a large portion of India that is third world that is below the poverty line. But from my experience, it is those people who I admire the most," he added.

Hayden's comments, used in describing the factors that led to Australia's slow over-rate during the fourth and final Test in Nagpur, not only irked Indian cricket board officials and skipper Mahendra Dhoni but a large section of the general public as well.

Nice on Hari !! May be he is resenting it in privacy ... 'Oh Boy, I should be careful the next time I hold a microphone' !!

I like Hayden by Hari on 23 Nov 2008

I especially admire the way he has an IQ in the 60s but still holds his head so high, and is so proud, and waxes eloquent on macro economics. It frustrates me that certain sections of humanity want to take someone like him down.

Hayden by Reddy on 23 Nov 2008

The Aussies are the fools. Hayden's and Ponting's books are to sell is Australia and not many any where else.So it doesnt matter that they are choosing to give thier countrymen all the lies. Good luck.

Hayden by Rahul on 23 Nov 2008

Don't worry guys these guys are just making a publicity stunt.Anyways who watches cricket in OZ.You must have seen the stadiums are almost half empty. They get treated lavish in India 5 star hotels good transport sponsorships hefty packages. They would go hungry if they wouldnt tour the third world countries.Buggers

Hayden View by Siva on 22 Nov 2008

Why notHayden talk about hisfore fathers ? where did they come from and what is their profile ? What current genration of Ozzies are doing with neighbouring poor islands ?

hayden is right by vishal on 21 Nov 2008

India most certainly is a third world country. From our poverty to our corruption. From our squaler to the animals on our streets. From our lack of drinking waters/ electricity even in the cities to the propensity of our rural population and a large section of our urban population also to defacate in the open - India is out and out a third world country. Those gleaming sky scrappers and those shiny malls notwithstanding.

hayden's remark on India by Priyanka on 21 Nov 2008

WHO CARES WHAT HE SAYS. AND WHY GIVE IT ANY IMPORTANCE? HE IS ONLY AN OPENING BATSMEN!!!

Heyden Vs Third World Countries by A.NATARAJAN on 21 Nov 2008

I feel that undue publicity is given by the Press and Media for all the non-sense uttered by these Aussies. The best thing is just to ignore their comments. Atleast the Indian Press should do that. One by one these Aussies are uttering non-sense statements and we are simply wasting our time commenting on that. Better we put a full stop to that. But one appeal to all these Australian Players. Please don't ever venture to tour THIRD WORLD countries. Play Club matches at Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane etc. We don't want you here any more. Okey.

Hayden by Dr. Ash Sood on 21 Nov 2008

I respect Methew Haydens view as a indivisual and we should acknowledge the respect he has for our country.India is indeed left to be a 'third world' country in economic sense by the people who plundered its wealth for centuries (iam sure mathew reads the history) but India is still miles ahead than the @first world' as far as moral and cultural vales are concerned.Except for the criminals and politicians all Indians are ready to give their last piece of bread to their guests smilingly and be proud about that.

Read up 3d world by Ghanshyam Das on 21 Nov 2008

Third world is a descriptive term, not a pejorative term. Please look up wikipedia. It will help separate emotions from rationality! It has acquired connotations of backwardness over time, but if that is true then there must be facts to support that conception. Cause for reflection and not a knee-jerk reaction.

Matthew Hayden, you erred some by Shashank Vagal on 21 Nov 2008

Criticism is always to be looked at with a discerning sense. While it is true that we need to focus on more important issues rather than being able to play good Cricket (prioritywise, I mean), these two subjects are in no way related the way Hayden puts it! His comments as expected from any Australian on any other issues are COMIC if any. It takes guts (and good upbringing?) even to lose honourably, my dear Hayden! And as for us Indians, let's begin to look decent to the world, it;s about time. Disply of poverty and filth does not appeal to anyone but looks disgusting and more so when even the poor do not care about it, but try more to impose it on the the others. See what is happening in our most cities (!) brought about by those who have nothing to lose?

HaydenLlets give him a smile and say thanks for letting us know! by vishal on 21 Nov 2008

Lets give hayden a smile and silently let him go! lets not forget one thing,we are also a country of Gandhiji:its high time we start respecting values given by him: let hayden say whatever he says.how does it really matter.we as citizens of this country know what the reality is:and ya if we think that there are problems with our country, don't worry ,i'm sure they will get resolved: you know how: i frankly see an uprising or revolt by economically poor section in few decades time.you can't supress a large section of society with power.and i'm sure this will happen.and that will be the day we would all be equal ,we'd start respecting the value of labour.we'd start valuing human life.our population will be in control.Mr.hayden: go have fun in your country, you wanna have fun in india, you are most welcome:you can great variety of food here which you guys out there cant even think of.we have beautiful places to visit.i'd suggest take retirement and explore india for 5 years and then comment

Hayden is nuts by RajGupta on 21 Nov 2008

Hayden should stop touring India - We feel that he is hostile man and not a good guest to have.

third world country by v,raswant on 21 Nov 2008

If the first world is based on stealycutlture, which is indeed is, then india is a third world country and should be proud to be.

Aussies and cricket by G.N.RAO on 21 Nov 2008

What has " India's Third world' poverty got to do with their playin cricket in this country ? These Aussies ,are besides being ugly on the cricket fields are imbeciles in their talk and behaviour outside. To hell with their lack of sportive spirit, arrogance and colonial mentality !!

Greedy Aussies by Vidya on 21 Nov 2008

If Aussies truly believe that India is a 3rd world country, how come they take millions of dollars from IPL / ICL to play here ?

excellent comment !! by aam adami on 21 Nov 2008

Excellent Comment Rao.

I agree with Hayden by Narain on 21 Nov 2008

There is chaos every where and the politicians hold the country to ransom. Corruption is wide spread and nothing seems to have been done by successive government. You should have been residing in Bangalore to know what is happening in the last 7 days. To coronoate Kumaraswamy, the city was halted. There is no power and the roads are not motorable. We are not talking about the wealth of the few, but the worry of a common citizen. There will be ups and down in the US economy (cyclical changes), but in India some have every thing and most have nothing. I am a technologist, but still believe that we have a long way to go to be called as a genuinely caring Nation. BCCI takes the money from common citizens and doles out to cricketers from all over the world. Some earn thousands per run scored. Why can't they help infrastructure development!

Narain by karan on 21 Nov 2008

These are problems of a developing country which will take sometime to resolve.

Narain by karan on 21 Nov 2008

stop being so disgruntled and defaming India alongwith Hayden and other aussies. What India has , these countries dont have such as heritage, culture, art, history , values, spirituality . Rest will fall in place.Get rid of all corrupt politicians who are the main cause of these issues.

India is not 3rd world country.. it is 27th corld country

Reactions to Haydens comments by Ravi on 21 Nov 2008

I agree to Heydens comment, as i myself am an indian and living abroad for a long time and surely see the aspects clearly. Even though, India has advanced enormously in the recent years, It still has a huge task of reducing the property level. Mr.Hayden meant his remark in view of statistics and here is what the world bank also got to say:"41.6% of Indias population lives below the new international poverty line of $1.25 (PPP) per day. The World Bank further estimates that 33% of the global poor now reside in India. Moreover, India also has 828 million people, or 75.6% of the population living below $2 a day, compared to 72.2% for Sub-Saharan Africa"Mr. Hayden is not discrediting India. He infact has recognised and appreciated other great qualities of a India, rich in clulture. He has only stated facts.

hayden calls india 3rd world by a.j.majumdar on 21 Nov 2008

third world or not, my country is not one where people has right to education, opportunity for jobs, adequate food, minimum health care. condemn hayden, then condemn transparency international, then national sample survey. see if you feel better. i as an inconsequential indian would request my countrymen to be awre how half of us live.

India is a developing country by vrisika on 21 Nov 2008

Wont explain again why i say so. But would like to say that these very aussies who are pointing fingers at us and calling us and India names will find themeselves in a third world situation very soon at the way the economy is moving .Also population growth being zero , things are kept well covered under the carpetin Australai. There is nothing as 1st ,2nd ,3rd or 4th world in this era . This was snobbery displayed by the european countries in the 30's,40's and 50's.Times have changed now. India and China are growing so rapidly, it will be impossible for australia to catch up with them which will soon be in the so called 3rd world situation by then.

re by Mr Ramanathan on 21 Nov 2008

vrisika you have the mentality of a flea, why do you insist on being so patriotic is beyond disbelief. Leave Mark alone and leave Australia alone and get on with your own simple little life, for everyone's sake....PLEASE!!

India the 1st country by Chanakya on 21 Nov 2008

May it is right to redefine what 3rd country means ? In case of poverty I think all nations are having this problem in some measure or the other. There can be no conutry which can boast of all super rich population. After all we are all human beings and as long as exploit and exploited exists this class struggle goes on . May be Hayden is not fully aware of these truths.

re by vrisika on 21 Nov 2008

Yes i do agree with you There is lot of poverty in these western countries as the population growth is nil , it is managed by the charity organisations such as salvos in australia.

Hayden Statement by Avinash Baranwal on 21 Nov 2008

Well, Hayden is right with his statement.I do not understand if the fact is not a concern for we Indians, why the mere statement is a concern???

Misleading information by Prof Popatlal on 21 Nov 2008

The map which is being referred to by the commentator below shows the First (blue), Second (red), and the Third World (green) countries during the Cold War (1946-90).READ THE YEARS CAREFULLY .

Is it okay to say, your mama is fat and ugly? Part 2 by Arya on 21 Nov 2008

Progress of nations, cultures and civilizations, we know is transient. It is not a snap shot of capabilities of people, as capabilities evolve. We might not be satisfied with progress India has made in last 60 years, for sure there are opportunities lost. But we know in our heart, we wish to restore the glory of our India against all divides and obstacles that plague us. Our generations will see the results of our actions today. We are a proud nation. Hayden does not know India, and his statements indicate lack of humility... it is a fact.

Hayden's Remarks by Abhijit on 21 Nov 2008

I agree with what my fellow Indian citizen Mr. Jay says. Yes, it does sound demeaning when somebody calls us a 3rd World country. But a harsh truth always hurts. By this I in no way applaud Haydens statement, but what he has said is true

re by kunal on 21 Nov 2008

And whether a foreigner salutes you back or abuses you or kicks you in the butt is a different thing. Will leave you to decide.

India is not a third world by Kunal on 21 Nov 2008

I think some of you are being misled . Read wikipedia again carefully. Stop defaming your own country. We know some of you in India still salute a foreigner.Have dignity and self pride.
