Mathew Hayden

Melbourne, November 20: Australia opener Matthew Hayden on Thursday stood by his comment about India being a ‘third world country’ but insisted he never meant to disrespect the nation or its citizens and said by 'third world' he meant a large section of the Indian population that are living below the poverty line.

He also claimed he was fascinated by the diversity of India's culture but feels he was being held at ransom by ‘certain sections of humanity’.

"The politics of cricket, I think, has gone mad. One of the things I love the most about India, is that you walk around the back of the hotel, and there's a man who's selling peanuts on the street for one cent a month, and he holds his head so high, and is so proud, as if he was making $2 million a month.

"It frustrates me that certain sections of humanity want to take someone like myself down, who is a really great admirer of the country, and who has really built his career on the back of the country in a very proud and honoured way," Hayden was quoted as saying by 'The Age'.

"We've had our competitive spats, but I'm sure that's only enhanced the reputation of India. It's made them play better against me, and I've played better against them.

"I stand by what I said. There is a large portion of India that is third world that is below the poverty line. But from my experience, it is those people who I admire the most," he added.

Hayden's comments, used in describing the factors that led to Australia's slow over-rate during the fourth and final Test in Nagpur, not only irked Indian cricket board officials and skipper Mahendra Dhoni but a large section of the general public as well.

Hayden and cheap publicity by Jai Kumar on 21 Nov 2008

Yes Hayden is right a large section of India is poor. However India is the 4th largest economy in the world and maybe tomorrow these very same hardworking, honest and proud people that he admires so much will be able to rise over that imaginary poverty line, their destiny can change. On the other hand in Australia, a large section of the population are born to criminals who were deemed unfit to keep around in England and no matter what those people do they can never change their lineage. A country made up of ruffians and "thrid class lineage".It reminds me of Winston Churchill's response to someone who called him drunk, he said, "Yes I am drunk today but when I wake up tomorrow I will be sober again, but on the other hand you are born ugly, what will change when you wake up tomorrow?"

Hayden has a breakdown by makee on 21 Nov 2008

There is poverty in India like anyother developing country which does not make it third world though .India has made improvements in all areas unlike third world. If there is poverty in india there are other factors to be blamed for it .

Third world by Virkam on 20 Nov 2008

People in general in India are not ready to take the reality that they are indeed poor majorly. Thanks to Brits, who looted to the core.. Sometime back some brit asked me about what do I think Britain has given to India to which i bluntly replied " if at all britain had given something to India, India wouldnt have been a poor country and Britain woudlnt have been rich",, I am bit naive here, however the truth is the truth, Britain is responsible for down trhodden also confused cultured India. Thanks Elizabeth

I agree by Ghanshyam Das on 20 Nov 2008

Hayden is corect. India is a mix of third world characteristics and first world talent and wealth. Instead of coming down hard on him for holding up a mirror to show the country's failures and redirect its priorities, we should accept what he says at face value and move on. It is not an affront to be reminded of an unpleasant reality.

Third world country by Simon Abraham on 20 Nov 2008

Well i feel what Hayden said is true. It is only in India That a situation has occurred that we had to abandon a cricket match just because we were on the losing side in 1996 world cup semi against Lanka. Such a thing has never happened in Australia, NewZeland or England.Such things happen only in countries like West indies and India

Sore Looser, again by Jatin Patel on 20 Nov 2008

Defeat in sport should not be a personal disgrace! The poor and sore looser is now showing a boorish character of his persona. It is not up to Australian to decide on countries as first, second or third world.

non diplomatic australians by jagannivasan on 20 Nov 2008

Dear Mr. Hyden please change your views on India it is already recognized by the entire world that India is a devoloping contry and the poverty scale is below 30%. Apart from this India is the most stable country to fight the current global financial crisis, pls wait the time will prove you and please read and watch the global news to enable you to improve your knowledge about the world.

Hayden repeats ‘India a third world country’ by Subhash on 20 Nov 2008

Mr Hayden should in that case not come to India to play the IPLIPL teams should take a note of such racist remarks and ban these players from participating in the tournament.Shame on these Aussies ... they cannot take defeat sportingly !

Whats the big deal? by S T on 20 Nov 2008

Why is it a big deal if he calls India a Third World country? Most of our countrymen are poor. It is not as if India became a 3rd world country after Hayden said so. So, why the fuss?

Hayden by deadlybull on 20 Nov 2008

Hayden is absolutely right. I don't understand whats the big deal and why Indian media is going after him. The fact that our media is potraying him in bad light shows we still are a third world country

third world india! by joel on 20 Nov 2008

yet the stupid moneybags will pay him millions to play in IPL. the same person would fire and indian employee if he spoke a similar truth about his company. Indians have no self respect when faced with a white taunt. They crave for money being a nation of beggars. Imagine a person earning 1c a month and that personwill be paid millions by some IPL team!!! Indians only boast they will be a super power but Bombay has more people than Australia except for 5 cities totally undeveloped but they can ridicule Indians because Indians shiver in front of a white however rich he may be. Wake up Indians you are beggars who will do anything to make money.

HAYDEN'S UNCULTURE by JAGANNATHAN on 20 Nov 2008

HAYDEN MAY BE FROM THE FIRST WORLD COUNTRY BUT HE IS A THIRD GRADE CITIZEN--WE INDIAN NO NEED TO WORRY WHERE WE ARE, FIRST OR SECOND OR THIRD--WE DID NOT MAKE ANY CLULTURAL HIJACK LIKE HYDEN'S WORLD--HE CLEVERLY HIDE UNDER THE ECONOMIC FACTS-BUT HIS REAL INTENTION WE KNOW--4 MILLION PEOPLE IN THE Q TO GET THE GOVERNMENT GROSSORY AID IN USA--WHAT IS THE CONDITION HAYDEN'S FIRST WORLD GIVE TO ABROGENS??????SO HE IS VERY MUCH WORRIED ABOUT INDIAN BENET SELLER--IS HE HAVE THE HEART FOR DAFOOR OR AFGAN POORS OR HE SOLD HIS HEART TO INDIAN BEANET SELLER ONLY--THIS IS REALLY 100% CRICKET POLITICS--HE PROVED HIS CULTURE, BROUGHT UP ET BY HIS HONEY COATED EXPRESSION.

BCCI sham- Matthew is right by Erasmus on 20 Nov 2008

Matthew makes sense and what he is saying is not untrue. Before cricket board in India tries to slam Matthew. Why dont they do something for India. BCCI is a money making machine with false notion of representing India. They dont. period

Hayden-Hey Demon by M.V.Muthu on 20 Nov 2008

Now, beyond doubt, this Aussie is unable to accept his failures and the defeats of his team by Team India in the recent tour. As he has precipitated the reality by standing on judgment on India as a nation, the least that he deserves is a ban on his participation in IPL tournaments in future by terminating his contract.

head-strong Hayden by Janaki ram Kolluru on 20 Nov 2008

I think Hayden has really gone mad. when Aus win against India, then they are bothered by the country and the poverty line and the culture. But when they loose against India, they suddenly remember that India is a third world country and they comment about the people. I think he is going in the same lines of Gilchrist, to make some rubbish comments, and get in to the news... Not only has Hayden, every one has built their career, on the back of their country. Every one is proud of their country. So better think before they speak about any nation..

third world country by Girish on 20 Nov 2008

Perhaps Hayden does not understand the global economics too well. What was the necessity to bring any kind of reference to the term "third world country" Where is he first and second world today in the fast emerging global economic crisis. IT looks very articfical, let him wait for another 10 years and then he will understand what means third world country, perhaps countries like Australia will figure in that list, India and China were the biggest economies until 1800s,we have seen what happened in history; and also now seeing the emergence of these two economies back. Let him focus on improving his cricket and his country men rather than getting into all these excuses

Time to introspect by Jatin on 20 Nov 2008

Hayden is much honest and straightforward than many of Indian elites who live a king size life with all Western luxuries and also habituated with typical Indian feudal advantages they will never get in a western country. This lot of neo-rich and elites are the main problem for India’s all round growth and not allowing general public to introspect. They are the people who oppose the “3rd world” designation for India while they are the main responsible for India still being a 3rd world country.

Yes, India is a 3rd world country by Jay on 20 Nov 2008

Hayden is right. India IS a third world country. If anyone has any problem with that, s/he should get his/her head checked. But that does not mean that India is not supirior to Australia so far last test series is concenred. Those people who find Hayden's comment offensive should think why India is still a 3rd world country and what they are doing in their own personal capacity to make it a 1st world country; are they becoming more honest, start opposing corruption, not taking bribe, teaching their kids a lesson on morality and honesty by setting personal examples and so on.
