Chandigarh A head constable allegedly beat up a 22-year-old woman in a police station in Mansa district in Punjab, official sources said.

They said a liquor contractor had accused two women, Raj Kaur and Paramjit Kaur, of illegally selling the substance in his area and handed them over to the police on Saturday. A case of theft was also registered against them.

SHO of Bareta police station Sikander Singh allegedly asked the women constables to beat up the two accused and when they refused to do so, the head constable on duty allegedly pulled Raj Kaur's hair and beat her mercilessly, they said.

Meanwhile, the SSP has asked the SP to probe the incident, which was later flashed on TV channels, and submit his report at the earliest.
