Apollo launches cardiac CT scan unit
Apollo CT Scan Centre has launched a 64 slice Cardiac CT Scan unit at Jehangir Hospital. Apollo CT Scan centre celebrated its 8th anniversary on Saturday. Lila Poonawala inaugurated the ultramodern CT Scan unit which is the first of its kind in Pune. With this latest machine, the radiation and contrast dose to the patient is very less, which is very useful for cancer patients .

K B Grant gets lifetime achievement Award
Dr K B Grant, managing trustee of Ruby Hall Clinic was awarded the lifetime Achievement award by GE healthcare for modern medicare excellence award for 2007 that recognises the work done by individuals and hospitals in the health care industry. Bomi Bhote, CEO of Ruby Hall Clinic was nominated for the administrator of the year. The Ruby Hall Cancer center was also nominated for the hall of fame 2007.

Call for help
Connecting, the suicide prevention group started its Suicide Prevention Helpline ( 9922001122 ) on June 10. Run by volunteers who have been screened and selected and given basic training by Connecting members Sandy Dias Andrade and Adithy, the Helpline will operate from 4.00 pm to 8.00 pm everyday initially.

Protest against violence against doctors
The NCP Doctor's Cell along with IMA, Pune Branch held a meeting demanding an ordinance on violence against the doctors to be passed. Around 300 doctors attended the meeting. Supriya Sule, M.P. was the chairperson for the meeting.Dr. Devendra Shirole, President IMA Mah.arashtra, described the need for such an ordinance.Dr. Avinash Bhondwe, President of IMA, Pune Branch said that the law which is needed for violence against doctors is not aimed at the patients but against the antisocial elements who take undue advantage of the situation and do harm to both doctors and hospitals. He urged for an increase in the punishment to 3 years and a fine up to Rs 5 lakh for criminals in such cases. Dr. Bhondwe further demanded a probe into the matter regarding the death of a patient in a hospital, in which the doctors are charged with the non-bailable charges instead of bailable charge as per the directions of the Supreme Court of India.(IPC 304 and 304A). Supriya Sule assured the doctors to look into the demands and will try to pursue the matter in these cases. She also appealed to all the doctors to take part in 'Save Girl Child' campaign.

Life Sciences, health and medicine Centre
MP Supriya Sule visited the Centre for Life Sciences, Health and Medicine at Kondhwa . The center is an institution for path breaking work on brain and neurodevelopment disorders and is housed in architecturally acclaimed premises developed by American Architect, Christopher Benninger.Supriya Sule, met and talked to the patients. The treatment at the center is based on holistic system of medicine. Dr Gunuwant Oswal's main areas of research are Brain injuries , Mental Retardation, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Down's Syndrome, various developmental disabilities, Neuropathies,Multiple Sclerosis, SSPE and blood disorders like chronic ITP, herpes Zoster.

Guidelines - 2008
Padmashree Dr. A Rajshekharan, president of the National Board of Examination, Ministry of Health and family welfare announced that NBE will start a separate three years training course for doctors in Emergency Medicine. The training course is expected to commence from January 2009. He further informed that NBE has recognised Deenanath Hospital as a regional centre of excellence to impart training in critical care faculty. He also mentioned that NBE would focus on conducting training courses for doctors in family medicine and rural surgery. Dr Rajshekharan spoke after inaugurating a two-day national conference titled as Guidelines - 2008 at Deenanath Hospital. Dr Mahesh Tulpule and Dr Prasad Rajhans were also present. Rajhans, the chairman of the conference said that there is a need to standardize medical treatment, which should be protocol based and also a need for hospitals to have accreditation. Guidelines 2008 is discussing standardizing medical care used internationally for critically ill patients. Tulpule appealed participating doctors to follow various guidelines prepared by experts in their daily medical practice. He also appealed doctors to become bold and confident for doing further research based on their practise experience.
