‘Healthcare in villages of primary concern’

Kolkata, January 7 Improvement of primary health in villages is one of the top priorities of the state government and the administration is gearing up for it said Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

Bhattacharjee inaugurated a number of health initiatives at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital today. This included a new outpatients department building, a gasteroenterology department, quarters for residential medical officers, a state-of-the-art morgue, an underground water reservoir and a minimum invasive surgery unit.

State finance minister Asim Dasgupta state health minister Surjya Kanta Mishra announced a development package for the college on the occasion. By April, the hospital will boast of a full-fledged auditorium along with a nursing college. A trauma centre and a guesthouse for patients’ relatives are also in the pipeline.

“Apart from development of agriculture and industries, we are also keen on human development in the state. When we came to power, 50 per cent of the population was below the poverty line. Now the figure is 20 per cent. Health infrastructure at the grassroots is being revamped to provide proper medical facilities to the poor in villages,” said the CM.
