The division bench of Justices M R Shah and Ravi R Tripathi was hearing a writ petition filed by six residential welfare societies of the city. The petitioners had claimed that the corporation's decision to contract door-to-door solid waste collection service was in violation of the law for handling solid waste. They said, according to a Supreme Court judgement, the local people must be made stakeholders in the door-to-door solid waste collection process.
The petitioners pleaded that the AMC already has a successful policy of engaging residential societies for door-to-door solid waste collection and there was no need to replace the system by involving private contractors.
The petitioners further claimed that the corporation's cleanliness drive, based on the earlier policy, was still in place. They added that some societies had also received grants from the local body to buy tricycles for waste disposal. The petitioners argued that a participatory approach involving citizens was the most efficient and economical way of waste disposal.
