The Calcutta High Court directed the state government on Wednesday to submit the details of the inquiry undertaken by the police in the death of Sharada Verma. Verma(57) was suffering from kidney disorder and had died in the Apollo Hospital on E M Bypass on August 16, 2007.
Madan Murari Verma, a High Court advocate, had filed a writ petition in March, 2008 alleging that his wife died after she was administered wrong treatment in the hospital. He also claimed that the Phool Bagan police did not investigate the case properly.
Counsel of the state government, Suman Ghosh argued before the court on Wednesday that Verma had not lodged any complaint with the hospital authorities after the death of his wife. He lodged an FIR against the authorities with the Phool Bagan police on September 9, nearly a month after the death.
Ghosh said that Verma had written letters to three doctors of the hospital in December, demanding Rs 3 crore as compensation for their negligence in handling the case of his wife. When the doctors refused to pay, Verma filed the writ petition. The government counsel pointed out that in his petition, Verma did not mention the letters he wrote to the doctors.
The police had already submitted the case history of the deceased to Director of Medical Education of the state health department and Director of Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education to get their opinion on the death, added Ghosh.
