New Delhi A 45-year-old man was shot at by unidentified persons outside the Mayur Vihar Metro station in East Delhi on Saturday evening. While police are yet to identify the assailants, a relative of the victim has alleged that his wife’s “lover” may be responsible.

“The incident occurred around 5.45 pm. The man, Sheebu, ran up to CISF personnel posted outside Gate no 2 of the Mayur Vihar Metro station, claiming that he had been shot at. The personnel informed the police control room and called a CATS ambulance, which rushed Sheebu to the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital. Prima facie, it looks like a case of personal rivalry. A probe is on,” said Bhairon Singh Gurjar, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Railways).

Sheebu, a driver, is said to be in a critical condition. His sister, who lives with her family in Tilak Marg, told Newsline, “My brother has been married for 17 years, and has a 16-year-old son. He lives with his wife and child at a rented flat in Trilokpuri. Troubles erupted in their marital life when Sheebu learnt about his wife’s affair with somebody who lives in the neighbourhood.”

Sheebu’s wife reportedly moved in with her lover six months ago. “So, Sheebu moved in with me. But soon, his wife’s lover started threatening us over the phone frequently. He would keep challenging Sheebu to a duel at the Mayur Vihar Metro station or Trilokpuri. Be a man, he kept telling my brother. I avoided the calls and asked Sheebu to do so too,” the sister said.

“On Friday evening, he got a call from him again — this time while he was at a cousin’s place in Loni. When I met him at the hospital today, Sheebu told me that he had gone to meet his wife’s lover at the Metro station,” she added.

Iqbal, a rickshaw puller outside the Metro station, said he heard a gunshot, and then saw a wounded Sheebu running up to the CISF personnel. “At the same time, I saw two other men running away,” he added.

CISF spokesperson Nishant Sankale said, “The victim came up to the doorframe metal detector and fell. CISF personnel informed the PCR, and then called an ambulance.”

“A case of attempted murder has been registered under Section 307 of the IPC,” Gurjar said.
