Hillary for joint oversight of Pakistan nukes

Manchester, January 6: US White House hopeful Hillary Clinton has said she would propose a joint US-British team to oversee the security of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal if she is elected President.

"So far as we know right now, the nuclear technology is considered secure, but there isn't any guarantee, especially given the political turmoil going on inside Pakistan," Clinton said during a Democratic debate.

If elected President, the US senator said, "I would try to get (Pakistan President Pervez) Musharraf to share the security responsibility of the nuclear weapons with a delegation from the United States and, perhaps, Great Britain, so that there is some fail-safe."

The four Democratic candidates - Clinton, Senator Barack Obama, Governor Bill Richardson and former senator John Edwards - were scathing about President George W Bush's policy towards Pakistan.

They said they were prepared to launch unilateral military strikes in the country if they detected an imminent threat or could pinpoint the location of Al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden.

"Here's an unstable leader, Musharraf, in a country with a serious radical - violently radical element that could, under some circumstances, take over the government," warned Edwards.

"If they did, they would have control of a nuclear weapon. They could either use it, or they could turn it over to a terrorist organization to be used against America or some of our allies," he added.

Day Dream by Pradeep Menon on 07 Jan 2008

its too far away, first Mrs Clinton has to win party elections, Then presidential election, then Pakistan has to agree to it, China and Russia has to agree.. Its like a day dream, don't get carried away by this stupid news..

.... not really. by SoftWords BigStick on 08 Jan 2008

You are probably not aware that Ms Clinton is only echoing the general US foreign policy line of thinking. The US has been planning this "joint" oversight of Paki nukes since 1998 (when Pak declared itself a nuke power). And the opertaional plan (details of HOW they will implement this) was created immediately after Sept/11. In other words, this is not a "Hillary Clinton" plan, rather it is a "US" plan - therefore irrespective of Ms Clinton winning or losing, this plan can and will be implemented.Jai Hind !!

Neutralization of Pak Nukes only way to contain global terror by Sam on 07 Jan 2008

Global terror can be contained only if Pakistan's nuke arsenal is neutralised. I dont see any other way to control global terrorism. A non-nuclear Pakistan will not be in a position to blackmail rest of the world in the future.

some questions by Pradeep Menon on 07 Jan 2008

True, but other countries will think the same about Indian weapons. What will happen if it falls in hands of Hindu fundamentalists ? Cant they drop it on Pakistan ? some of the these groups are of the view that all Muslims are terrorists.

.... some answers. by SofWords BigStick on 08 Jan 2008

Wow !! Your reasoning resonates with ridiculous logic. When have your so called "Hindu fundamentalists" launched a world-wide campaign of terror ? Have any so called "Hindu fundamentalist" groups made claims that they will unilaterally attack Pakistan ? Please compare apples to apples my friend !! As for the view that all Muslims are terrorists - lets face the facts - all terrorists in the world today are Muslims. Enough said on that subject. As for the chances of any so called "Hindu fundamentalist" groups taking over the nuke arsenal in India - it is more probable that the US nuke arsenal will fall into the hands of Christian fundamentalists - matter of fact, some fear that is already happening, considering the way Mr Bush and Mr Cheney are running things .....

Excellent suggestion to remove Pakistani nukes... by Shiromani Chaturvedi on 07 Jan 2008

Anglo-American Front to protect Pak Arsenal by john jacobs on 07 Jan 2008

Preventing Pak nuclear weapons from falling into the hands of terrorists is a vitally necessary step in the context of that country's current political instability. However, any unillateral move to take control of the nuclear arsenal and impose puppet rulers at the helm of Government by force by an Anglo-American coalition will not go down well in the region. There are other major players in close proximity who could not be expected to take kindly to any unilaterism as was the case in Iraq.

Excellent suggestion to remove Pakistani nukes... by Shiromani Chaturvedi on 07 Jan 2008

u dont have much understanding and are talking like an idiot. when good thing has come india's way why u are interfering?once nukes are gone from pakistan courtesy usa and uk, india will be much safer. why are u so bothered, are u pakistani?

Oh really ? by SoftWords BigStick on 08 Jan 2008

Your argument is based on the fact that the nukes will be taken away from Pakistan. Please read the article carefully, the nukes are not going anywhere, they will remain in Pakistan but under new masters i.e. US and UK. These two countries have f*cked up so badly in Afghanistan and Iraq, do you seriously think they will be able to take care of Paki nukes ? Who are you kidding man ? Wake up and see the truth my friend.

That could be a first step in right direction. Ultimate goal should be the dismantling of related infrastructure and the nukes. India need be involved in such arrangement. by KMR Overseas on 07 Jan 2008

Another worst-case scenario, incase Pakistan slides to anarchy or coming under UN sanctions. They might sell some ready made nukes to Iran, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia etc for billions of dollars. This would lead to another catastrophe. This must be avoided at any cost. It appears, Pakistanis would never allow world community to sleep peacefully in future.

JOINT CONTROL OF PAK. NUCLEAR WPN IS BETTER FOR INDIA.LESS DANGER. by SUBA RAJU. on 07 Jan 2008

SOME MUSLIM GUY SAYS INDIA SHOULD OPPOSE US'S JOINT CONTROL OVER PAK-NUCLEAR WPN. DONT FALL FOR THIS. THEY WANT TO USE INDIA AND ITS INFLUENCE TO DEFEND PAK. JUST LIKE THEY USED MMS TO GET HANEEF FROM AUSTRALIA. HEY GUYS, IT IS OLD TRICK.

Immature Clinton ..... by SoftWords BigStick on 06 Jan 2008

India should immediately issue a statement that Mrs Clinton will not be allowed to setup this joint oversight without Indian participation. This is a dangerous development - considering that India is in the immediate neighborhood of these nuclear weapons, any decision by the joint oversight committee will affect us first. Therefore we must be a part of that oversight.

DONT USE INDIA TO DEFEND PAKISTAN.OK? by Chiman kaka on 07 Jan 2008

NO BUDDY, SOMEHOW YOU ARE TACTFULLY TRYING TO GET INDIA TO OPPOSE THE PAKIS ATOMIC WEAPONS. A JOINT OVERSIGHT OF PAKIS NUCLEAR WEAPONS WILL DECREASE THE DANGER TO US....PLS, DONT USE INDIA TO DEFEND PAKISTAN. DONT USE THIS COUNTRY. INSTEAD,APPEAL TO INDIAN MUSLIMS TO COMEOUT OF JIHADIST MENTALITY. DONT CHEAT THE HINDUS IN THE NAME OF SECULARISM. OK? THANKS.

...... innocent Chiman by SoftWords BigStick on 07 Jan 2008

Kaka, mi pan kai sangitla ? Try to understand, I'm sating that India should have a MAJOR say in the future of Paki nukes, instead of leaving it in the hands of US and UK. Do you think we will be safe if we have US controlled nukes in our backyard ? It will be the same as leaving it in the hands of Pakis ...... I would rather have it taken out of action altogether, or under total Indian control or else joint India-US-UK control, but NEVER under the control of just US-UK.Jai Hind !!

Mush's Mushroom Clouds by drmadhani on 06 Jan 2008

Did these idiots know what will happen to give nuclear bombs to Pakistan?Chinese knew it and approved it and gave chinese blue prints for their hatred of India.Chinese told N Koreans to give rocket technology.US UK knew it but they never could contemplate that N bombs will make their way to USA UK EU. What crocodile tears!
