"His death has caused an irreparable loss to Nepal. We have lost a dear friend of Nepal and a hero of the mountain world," said Tourism Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung.
Hillary, 88, passed away at Aukland Hospital in New Zealand, Friday morning due to heart attack. The gangling New Zealander conquered world's highest peak Mt Everest for the first time on May 29, 1953 accompanied by Nepalese Tenzing Norgay, making a new history in the mountaineering world.
It is only after the human victory over Everest that Nepal rose into the world tourism map and soon mountaineering and trekking became the major source of employment and foreign exchange to the Himalayan nation.
"His death is a big loss to Nepal, which consider tourism as one of the main foreign exchange earning industry," said Bhumi Lama, Vice-President of Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA).
Hillary has established the Himalayan Trust, a non-governmental organization, that is active in setting up schools, hospitals and providing drinking water facilities to the people residing in mountain region, he said.
Hillary was facilitated in May 2003 in Kathmandu when he took part in the Golden Jubilee celebration of the first successful ascent of the Everest.
