Burney said his rights organisation, the Ansar Burney Trust International, had learnt that 15-year-old Gajri, the daughter of Mengha Ram, was abducted by a Muslim neighbour from her home at Katchi Mandi, Liaquatpur, in Rahim Yar Khan district on December 21, 2009.
Gajri's parents later found out that she was beingheld captive in a madrassa or seminary in southern Punjab and that she had been married and converted to Islam, Burney said.
The local administration is "refusing to respond to the abduction" of the girl, who is not being allowed to leave the madrassa or to speak to her parents, he said.
Burney, a former human rights minister, condemned the forceful conversion of the Hindu girl and demanded her immediate release.
"Pakistan is a state party to the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which oblige authorities to protect religious minorities under international law," he said.
According to Ansar Burney Trust, on 21 December 2009 Gajri disappeared from the home of her Hindu parents in southern Punjab.
On December 26 last year, the local police station in Gajri’s hometown received a letter with an affidavit from madrassa that said she had "embraced Islam and had married her neighbour Mohammad Salim", Burney said.
The letter did not enclose a marriage certificate, he said.
Police did not immediately inform Gajri's parents about the letter even though they had tried to file a First Information Report after she had gone missing.
The parents were discouraged from doing so by police, Burney said.
Mengha Ram and his wife then contacted the vice president of the National Peace Committee for Interfaith Harmony, Ramesh Jay Pal.
With his help, the parents met the priest in charge of Darul-Uloom Madrassa in Khanpur, Maulana Abdul Hafeez.
Hafeez reportedly told the parents that Gajri had "embraced Islam and was not allowed to meet her parents".
In January this year, the parents of Gajri again tried to file a case of abduction against their neighbour and the madrassa but their application was refused by district police chief Imtiaz Gul.
He allegedly told them that he had no power to intervene in matters of religious conversion and that their daughter was now the "property of the madrassa", Burney said.
Burney said Gajri is a minor and "cannot arbitrarily be removed from the custody of her parents".
He urged President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Punjab Governor Salman Taseer to intervene to ensure Gajri's released.

Pakistani rights activist Ansar Burney has done a commandable job by highlighting the sad story of forcible conversion of a minor in Pakistan. The inaction of local poslice to help the parents of the victim girl speaks volumes about the state of affair of the minorities in Pakistan. Regards, Sanjay Saran

I don't understand one thing here. The whole story has nothing to do with any religion. The real story, if it is correctly reportedly, in contextual entireity, should be that a man has abducted a girl. Thousands of hindu girls in India are abducted on daily basis by their fellow hindus. I don't see any role of hinduism per se in those abductions.
i dnt understand ur theory my frend.if a man has abducted a girl of 15 should any religion support the man and claim she is converted and married to this man... wht if the child is ur daughter. ..have u aqny words now.
The best example of such a noble cause if Mr.Sharukh Khan. You get converted to Hinduism. Similarly all the muslims get converted to hinduism.

I am a Pakistnai and a Muslim. I can understand the sentiments of a common man in general and a Hindu in particular. But kindly do not generalise this to all Muslims and Islam. The man who is fighting for this unfortunate girl, Ansar Burney, himself is a Muslim and Pakistani. Islam the is religion of peace. This is more phenomenal in India than at any other place in the world as shrines and dargahs of Muslim sufis is spread across the country where people from all religion, colour, cast and creed come for spiritual satisfaction. Please spread love not hatred. Lets pray and fight to get justice to this poor girl.

Any Pakistani National coming to India for te intention of permanently sellting here has to undergo various legal processes. At present it is not so easy. You should rather suggest that Indian Govt. should relax rules for Hindus from Pakistan willing to settle in India.
If what has been reported is correct then it is a disgraceful act and should be condemned by all right thinking people. The Pakistan govrnment should not be a mute spectator and should act swiftly and decisively to book the culprit and award severe punishment.Such acts are neither permitted by civilised society nor by Islam. Abduction of a Hindu Girl to convert in Islam forcefully is very bad and unfornate happening. But we can say that for this some particular persons or a group is to only blame. Islam religion does not allows all these bad actions. God clearly says in the Quran Sharif that there is no compulsion for conversion to Islm. (La ikrah fiddeen). That's why the persons who act these types of acts as abduction and militency of mean mentality, are enemy of Islam and they are not true muslims. So please don't blame Islam for this.

And imagine Muslims in India live free without any fear from Hindu, Christian or Sikh neighbors. Muslims in Pakistan are doing what they did when they first invaded India. Occasionaly they do it in India also. Love jihad is one other form of abduction of Hindu girls. In Pakistan they do it with impunity and with blessings of their government and the rest of the population. That's the reason Hindu population in Pakistan has reduced from about 18% after the partition to about 2% now. In the mean time Muslim population in India has quadrupled, that is a whopping increase of 300%!!!! Amazing!!!And Hindus still don't learn -- keep it up and you have lost India also. Muslims want to convert the whole world by any means to Islam and threat, intimidation, kidnapping and any other violent means is sanctioned by Quran. They are just following what they are taught in mosques per their book!!!
