Five Muslims were killed in a powerful blast in the communally sensitive textile town of Malegaon in Maharashtra and one Muslim boy was killed in the explosion in Modasa in Sabarkantha district.
Both bombs were placed on motorcycles parked in crowded areas days before Eid and set off after Muslims had broken their Ramzan fast on a Monday evening.
The BJP had condemned both the blasts. Investigators initially suspected Islamist groups such as SIMI or the Indian Mujahideen to be behind the near-simultaneous attacks — the first blast was at Modasa at 9.26 pm, the second minutes later in Malegaon — as they came in the aftermath of blasts in Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Delhi.
Besides, the motorcycle in Malegaon was parked below the now-defunct first floor office of SIMI while the one used in Modasa had Islamic stickers on its seat.
However, investigators found that these were apparently attempts by the attackers to mislead them, the sources said.
The breakthrough, they said, came when they traced the origin of the two-wheeler used in Malegaon. The vehicle used was a LML Freedom brand although some of its parts had been cannibalised from other vehicles and the chassis and engine numbers had been erased.
But with this brand out of production, dealer records and help from forensic experts led the probe to Gujarat, the sources said.
The motorcycle was allegedly owned by a man with an “ABVP background” there while the attackers belonged to the Hindu Jagran Manch with its headquarters based out of the office of an NGO in Indore, investigators found.
Top Maharashtra police officials confirmed the breakthrough but refused to go on record due to the sensitivities involved, adding that Central agencies were aware of the development.
The blast in Malegaon had sparked mob violence as angry Muslims targeted the local police and grievously injured the first policemen to arrive at the site, including a probationary IPS officer.
The attack came two years to the month when three bombs had exploded in and around a mosque in the town and killed 37 people, mostly Muslim worshippers.
That attack was blamed on SIMI and nine men were arrested but the trial has been stayed by the Supreme Court.

We Hindu's should hold the BJP and its different branches responsible for destroying our Hindu names.
Looks like the claim on Delhi encounter. One has to wait and watch as in the Delhi case. May turn out to be similar.

Let the BJP come in power, the very first thing what they will do? they will remove the Hindu Group name from this case. They will definitely blame it on Indian Mujahideen, you are right they don't need proofs or evidence for that, it's so easy for them. Someone in this forum asked why the reporter didn't write Hindu Terrorists instead Hindu Group, so I think they are waiting before Police found it thier names in such more cases. I would say all these blasts are done by the same groups, but it's difficult for even UPS Government to came up with their names so easily, they afraid of remaining their Hindu vote bank.
In similar earlier cases, the police have been prompt in holding press confernces and indicating the names of suspected groups on the basis of evidnce collected by them. Why are they not doing the same in this case? On what basis are the press and some congresssmen are mentioning Hindu organistions in this case. Let the police declare the facts in press conference and take all necssary action irresptive of the religion of the groups responsible for the balsts.
Now invetigating agencies started realising that truth should be known to every body to stop these bomb blast politics.otherwise similar thing will continued and only muslim will be targeted. i will request all educated people in india that these bomb blast is nothing to do with normal hindues or normal muslims. these episodes are planned by some political outfit and executed by criminals so that their agenda can be made sucessful. I take strong objection to the way reporters highlight 'Hindu' or 'Muslim'.Being responsible reporters its important ,that atleast articles dont put more emphasis on a Hindu criminal or a Muslim criminal.These creates a psychological impact of division.Criminals are criminals ,why always put emphasis on their caste/religion/sect.these articles put arouse feelings against religions unknowinlgy.why cant you reporters write that a person was arrested ,is it important to highlight in the headlines his religion,it can be simply mentioned somewhere as a simple fact ,ther is no need to emphasise .Please be responsible
First of all Indian Express to be Congratulated for putting up brave face by breaking this news, which was unofficially in the media for some time. So far no leading Indian news paper except Express have published this news. Many unofficial news about linking the Godhra train burning to BJP should also be explored and justice to be brought back to India.
