Five Muslims were killed in a powerful blast in the communally sensitive textile town of Malegaon in Maharashtra and one Muslim boy was killed in the explosion in Modasa in Sabarkantha district.
Both bombs were placed on motorcycles parked in crowded areas days before Eid and set off after Muslims had broken their Ramzan fast on a Monday evening.
The BJP had condemned both the blasts. Investigators initially suspected Islamist groups such as SIMI or the Indian Mujahideen to be behind the near-simultaneous attacks — the first blast was at Modasa at 9.26 pm, the second minutes later in Malegaon — as they came in the aftermath of blasts in Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Delhi.
Besides, the motorcycle in Malegaon was parked below the now-defunct first floor office of SIMI while the one used in Modasa had Islamic stickers on its seat.
However, investigators found that these were apparently attempts by the attackers to mislead them, the sources said.
The breakthrough, they said, came when they traced the origin of the two-wheeler used in Malegaon. The vehicle used was a LML Freedom brand although some of its parts had been cannibalised from other vehicles and the chassis and engine numbers had been erased.
But with this brand out of production, dealer records and help from forensic experts led the probe to Gujarat, the sources said.
The motorcycle was allegedly owned by a man with an “ABVP background” there while the attackers belonged to the Hindu Jagran Manch with its headquarters based out of the office of an NGO in Indore, investigators found.
Top Maharashtra police officials confirmed the breakthrough but refused to go on record due to the sensitivities involved, adding that Central agencies were aware of the development.
The blast in Malegaon had sparked mob violence as angry Muslims targeted the local police and grievously injured the first policemen to arrive at the site, including a probationary IPS officer.
The attack came two years to the month when three bombs had exploded in and around a mosque in the town and killed 37 people, mostly Muslim worshippers.
That attack was blamed on SIMI and nine men were arrested but the trial has been stayed by the Supreme Court.

Who wrote the copy for this story? I hear Setalvad is an Indian Express favorite. I see that most of the story is speculative hot air, with no names named. What this is going to lead to for certain, is that next time a Muslim person should be so much as injured in a bomb blast, there are going to major riots because Hindus will be attacked. Is Express behaving responsibly?And why did not Indian Mujahideen disown these blasts if they were not conducted by them?

Ever since its inspection, BJP, RSS and all its sister organization has been involved in terror activies in whole of India. Although this is well known fact that all the terror activies are being patronized by these organization, but evry responsible indian is mum on them. More painfull facts is that, so far none of the investigating agencied dared to expose them......But sooner or later the truth will be out...JUSTICE will prevail, no matter what these terrorist do.....
When muslims plant bombs, it is "x number of people are killed'. When alleged hindus plant bombs, it is "x number of muslims are killed". Shame on media.

A terrorist attack whether by Muslim, or Hindu or Christian must be condemned and cuplrits punished. However this particular case assume special significance due to the fact that, the investigation has been conducted by Maharashtra congress party's police and at the utmost pressure from the congress govt. at the center, definitely there is all reasons to belive there is a planned conspiracy and a prejudiced investigation, because it is election time, and congress knows, better than any other party, how to play dirty politics, to that they will go to any extend! So, Maharashtra police's investigation must be proved by a proper impartial invitating agency! Sure there is a conspiracy to indict Hindus!

Very much shameful politics. Now, MH police will take on Hindu Groups, as they have pressure from Center Govt. to impress minority votes ahead of elections. Congress is also ruling govt. in MH and have to accept orders from Center. This is too much. India has biggest threat from its politicians than terrorists. Political parties go upto any level to be in chair. By calling Hindu groups behind the attacks, they r just securing their minority votes.

MH police acted very fast in identifying the culprits of Malegaon etc. what about the Bombay train blasts.. they had to wait for GJ or Delhi police investigation to say that it was Indian Muja. It has to be taken with pinch of salt. MH police is the worst police in India.

Dear there is no hindu terrorists or muslim terrorists or christian terrorists. There are criminals/ terrrorists in all faiths, this is the simple truth. Our problem is that iof a totally corrupt political system and a set of policemen who are in the same bed with the politicians.
