Greeting the people on the occasion of Maha Shivratri, the President called for peace and amity amongst the people of the Island nation.
"May their prayers and expectations for a better tomorrow be fulfilled, and may every lamp they light on this day enrich them spiritually, enhance their understanding and stronger unity among all our people," he said.
Rajapakse also said devotion aims at dispelling ignorance and to overcome anger and hatred.
"The aim of all this devotion is the dispelling of ignorance and the search for knowledge to overcome the evil tendencies of lust, anger, greed, infatuation, jealousy and hatred, and seek peace and harmony both in their lives and in society," he said.
The President said many rituals were associated with this festival, including fasting, night-long vigil at temples, making of offerings to Lord Shiva, the lighting of lamps and singing hymns.
According to Hindu mythology, Shiva, one of the holy trinity along with Vishnu and Brahma, married Parvati on this day.
"Hinduism, one of the great religions of the world, teaches man the virtues of piety, unity and harmony," he said adding, ‘Hindus, true to their religion, have been living for ages in amity and harmony with followers of other religions’.

Thank you President Rajapakse. Certainly Hinduism has a lot to offer the global age in terms of spiritual wisdom and earth traditions. It holds the world's largest, most ancient and perhaps the best maintained mystical tradition. Yet it also has a futuristic vision with its view of consciousness as the supreme reality,and interfaces well with modern science. Unfortunately,it is the Marxists of India who captured the intellectual elite of the country and turned them into mouthpieces for anti-Hindu attitudes. This trend is only slowly but surely changing in India today because of Swami Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo.
This man, Rajapakse, is a genius! He has revealed a fact no one at all knew earlier. He should be awarded the Bha_Rat_Rat_na. Ms Antonia Maino please note.
SriLankan Prez failed to formulate his feelings through this statement.He shouldn't have said Hinduism is ONE of the great religions in the world but should have said "Hinduism is the Greatest Religion on the earth".Through this religion the human race got the sense of civility and civilization.This religion is absolute and cosmos which was,is and will ever be.

Even the most tolerant Islamic nation - Malaysia doesn't show half the tolerance that Sri Lanka does. Its time for Muslim nations to wake up and learn to give respect to its religious minorities as much as they get from others.

Hinduism doesn't DENOUNCE OTHER RELIGIONS since it is the most Ancient Religion on Earth.I don't think most Hindus think the same way about other religions ..eg Islam .Why hasn't no Congress or other secular Party leader praised Hinduism in the same vain ..when they can't help praising Islam.

What the Sri Lankan President Mr. Mahindra Rajapakse said is true and that's the fact. Those who know deep about Hinduism would love and accept it. They are the "most" tolerant religion on earth, always respect other religions

What President Rajapakse sid is absolutely right. Hinduism doesn't denounce other religious faith. The skirmishes now seen in India is because of political ambitions and appeasement policies followed by the government and politicians.
