Hindus demand removal of 'offensive ad' by Burger King

Washington A US-based Hindu advocacy group has asked American fast food chain Burger King to immediately remove an advertisement campaign featuring goddess Lakshmi, which it says is "offensive" to the people of the faith.

Washington-based Hindu American Foundation said Burger King is running a print advertisement in Spain that depicts an image of the goddess seated atop a meat sandwich and other foodstuffs with the catch phrase, "A snack that's sacred," in Spanish.

In the letter written to the company, the HAF has also sought an apology from it for demonstrating lack of cultural and religious sensitivity in this case.

"An advertisement knowingly and intentionally using sacred symbols, especially those of another religious tradition for purely commercial purposes can be offensive in and of itself," said Suhag Shukla, managing director and legal counsel for the Foundation.

"Compounding this insult is the use of the sacred image for the sale of a meat product -Burger King's judgement in associating a burger with a Hindu goddess is absolutely baffling," Shukla said in a statement.

There was no immediate response from the media office of Burger King.

Shukla said that the Foundation had written a letter to corporate headquarters of Burger King last Tuesday. "There has been no response from them," he said. The HAF was informed about the advertisement by one of its members in Spain.

"I was horrified to walk by a Burger King store in my neighbourhood to discover an image of the same deity that I worship at my home altar, displayed so disrespectfully promoting a meat sandwich," said Monica Pahilwani, a Spanish.

"A multinational corporation with a global presence should be much more aware of religious and cultural sensitivities, and how truly repelling such an advertisement could be to Hindus," she said.

Spanish Hindus demanding physical removal of all of the ads in Fuengirola, Spain have already met some success locally, HAF said.

The geographic reach of the advertisement campaign was unknown, and it is unclear if similar ads are running in other countries as well, it said.

"Burger King, in its efforts to drum up sales, seems to be have taken out of its marketing equation respect of ethno-religious sensitivities," Shukla said.

"We are determined to follow this issue to ensure that Burger King stays true to its stated commitment to diversity and inclusion as it reaches out to its global consumers," he said.

consumer forum and consumer protection by Walsh on 09 Jul 2009

Millions of Indians are suffering at the hands of giant companies. These companies like water purifiers makers like Eureka Forbes, Banks,Airlines, Telephone companies promise and donot honor the warranty, collect full money and do not do any service. Even if we go to Consumer Courts they blatantly defy the court orders. They evade all the ethics of business. I urge expressindia to start a new column dedicating to helpless consumers.

language by Rama Rao on 09 Jul 2009

Arun Kumar, looks like you need to first realize that Hindi is not the only language of India. Several others are too. Hindi is just another regional language of India. Most of the speakers still live in the villages. Hindi speakers like you should first learn how to speak sanskrit and pronounce the words. RAMA is how it is written and how it is pronounced. You guys don't know the basics. While 'chair' is feminine, 'table' is masculine. No grammar or no logic! You better know how Indians pronounce sanskrit words. It is not bhojpuri or pahadi.

Too good! Now, can anyone tell me what is the true shape of gods and godesses we believe in?

Burger king advertisement of adding Hindu God=insult by vraman on 09 Jul 2009

Burger king found no other way of selling their products and just to draw the attention of criticism, so that more people talk about this,ie another way of sell advertisemnt.]They have to brough to court for insulting religion and ensure banning of such items from sale immediately, which can be only the solution for those who want cheap publicity.Hindu supports should boycot such shops and discourage people coming to their outlet, thereby they are exposed for ever.

Denigrating religious symbols and personalities is indeed deplorable by Ahmad on 09 Jul 2009

This wanton desecration of any religion's holy icons using them for commercial purposes is deplorable. People in the west simply don't understand people's sensibilities, having been brought up without any sensitivities.

pity by great on 09 Jul 2009

I feel pity for this news item itself. This is just published here to instigate the sangh writers who had gone into oblivion after the elections...Wake up..unite..oh Hindus..talk about secularism...ban bugerking..jingoism.. and all this is coming back to this column..utter nonsense...one thing everyone should understand...dont under estimate others and also beggars are not choosers

sermons on secularism by anand on 08 Jul 2009

now wait for the sermons from so called "seculars". they will start reminding us hindus how tolerant hinduism is and so on. they will also tell us how we should not protest against these insults. frankly speaking, we are tired of being tolerant. the more tolerance we show we are pushed further in the corner. we need VHP, RSS to start a campaign. now again the seculars will tell us that VHP, RSS will politicise the situation. but then why can't the so called seculars take up the issues of hindus?. the way they start chest thumping when it comes to islam and christianity. untill this happens, we will go to VHP

Hindu...the name is not true for you... by Jem Hassan on 08 Jul 2009

In regards to the post of the person under the mask 'Hindu', i have to alert you that it is your saffron publications and western zionists and orientalists that spread the misinformation that Islam urges to kill ;non-believers'(Kaafirs),,and your Sanghis gave the meaning for the word 'Kaafir' Hindu and alleged that Qur'an call for killing 'Hindus'...this is what you try to expound here?..or are you the prey of the Sanghis and Anti-Muslims who 24/7 dream of ending Islam in the world?...wake up before you die in pain for being in the world where you see alot of Muslims living with peace. All Muslims are not Talibanis who ask for Jizya and Jizya means nothing but a kind of 'tax' recovered from non-Muslims...and your saffron publications hide the fact that Muslims under Islamic rule have to pay more money as 'Zakaath' than the petty amount paid as 'Jizya' by the non-Muslims.To understand this, you need to learn Islamic history of our prophet(pbuh) from the right sources.I am sorry for it!

Hypocrite Idiots by Village Boy on 08 Jul 2009

How is Burger King any different from millions of Hindu and Sikh shop-keepers who shamelessly display pictures of Lakshmi and other so called sacred symbols/pictures to peddle their goods? If anything needs to be banned, ban the so called ‘Hindu advocacy groups’. These advocacy groups are nothing more than a bunch of religious idiots spreading their nonsense and intolerance in US or anywhere else. These people have nothing better to do than getting outraged at ‘other’ people. The so called “hurt religious feeling” is oxymoron. People of India badly need to be desensitized against this malady of ‘hurt religious feelings’. Only then they may live together without indulging in regular religious riots. I wish many Indian businesses also indulge in this noble practice of lampooning religious symbols/figures/books for the general good of public. Regarding many Muslims supporting their Hindu brothers on this issue, I would say – keep your intolerance to yourself, if you can get rid of it.

I think all Gods Statues and Pics be removed .. by MV on 08 Jul 2009

Going with anand's logic, I think, first off, all God's images must be banned from non-vegetarian restaurents and all such restaurants should not use God's name as part of their restaurant or store names. No " Ganesh non-veg Bhojanlay" or "Ganesh Beedis".

IE, the anti hindu paper by anand on 08 Jul 2009

when it comes to hindus, it is "offensive ad", as if mocking the hindus. when it comes to muslims then it has to be offensive ad, no questions asked.

shameless indian, really shameless by anand on 08 Jul 2009

first of all the gujus do not serve beef in their restaurants. secondly even if there are statues of ganesha and laxmi, they are behind the counters, not displayed on food items.i remember last year when a brewery in meghalaya had cross on the bottles. the beer was meant for exports only. the beer was sold in europe and US. there was no protests from the european or US christians but the local christians protested against. the UPA govt led by christian fanatic sonia immedietely banned it. this is really surprising because mr jesus himself (allegedly) turned entire lake in to wine and wine is distributed in the churches as well.will the UPA govt take action against burger king?. NO WAY. because abusing hindus is part of secularism. those hindu fools who voted for congress are going to pay for this.

this is very bad Indian government should take strict action on this

Balsphemy shall be condemned, whether it is against Hindus or Muslims or any Rekigion by sheeraz on 08 Jul 2009

I am a Muslim, Islam prohibits blasphemy of other religion.Along with all other Hindu brothers, I feel sad about the news.It is time that all religious heads sit together and evolve a policy to condemn/prohibit blasphemy. As such it is highly uncivilzed and unethical to feel happy or keep mum on the blasphemy issue.I remmebre the sad incidence when I was in Osmania University, ABVP(Student wing of BJP/RSS) students have copied and displayed the blasphemous material of Salman Rashdie's book in the university.I expect all the people to rise above the religion level and sound their voice against belaphemy. It is better to keep away the BJP/RSS/VHP away from such issues who will try to politicize the issue and disrupt the peace.

Burger King Spain insults Hindus by Dr. Paras Deo on 08 Jul 2009

This is not the first time that the Ethno-Europeans of Christian faithhave insulted the Hindus by misusing the Hindu symbols or clowning around with the images of the Hindu Gods or deities. Remember the alcohol ad and the those shoes with Ganesh on them? I suggest all to write an e-mail of protest directly to Burger King Spain with a CC to head office. When thousands of mails land in their server, they will realise what they have done. The contact e-mail can be obtained from their website.

Grow up already. by evox777 on 08 Jul 2009

Religion is nothing more than a philosophy/idea and as such is and should be open to criticism and ridicule. This is the same reason why pictures of mohammad were plastered in newspapers across Europe. It is something called 'freedom of speech' and is thankfully guaranteed to me by my constitution.@AjayYour use of sarcasm is just hilarious. You want the government of a secular country to intervene just because YOUR religious beliefs are under threat. wow, just wow.

@Arun Kumar by John on 08 Jul 2009

Mr. Arun Kumar is ignorant of Sankrit! The name of vishnu awatar is RAMA not RAM. Have you heard of IKSHAKU VAMSHA PRABHAVO RAMO NAMA JANAIHI STRUTHAHA...? In Sankrit RAMA, RAMOW, RAMAHA are the noun forms for singular, double and plural.

Look at your home before peeping on to your neighbours. by RN on 08 Jul 2009

Why people cry on such issues - when shameful Politicians (including those even being a Hindu and carrying names such as "Sitaram, etc.) in India themselves are arguing that "Lord Rama" never existed and roaming freely without any punishment from the public! It is not one religion or another - nobody should be allowed to play with the sentiments of any religion, how big or small it may be.

reply to Jem Hassan by hindu on 08 Jul 2009

First things first Mr Hassan, let your co religionists stop murdering and killing Hindus as non believers accoring to your "perfect" faith and stop wearing your religion on your sleeve. Such actions scare moderate Hindus like me who basically have nothing against you or any other religion but instead make me run to the Sangh Parivar for protection. If it comes to the crunch I feel we will certainly get a better deal from the western culture than from the likes of you.Look what happened to the Kashmir Pandits and the Sikhs who pay Jaziya in Pak.

Vegism vs Non-Vegism by Rajat on 08 Jul 2009

The non Veg food should be banned in India and aboard as it is bad for ecology. This is not debatable as it causes very large scale pressure on the natural resources. Sea food should also be banned and R

Every beef serving Indian restaurant run by gujjus etc in West has a photo of Lakshmi ji presiding by Shameless Indian on 08 Jul 2009

Every beef serving Indian restaurant run by Gujjus Punjabis Tamilians etc. in West has a photo of Lakshmi ji presiding over it. The restaurant manager/worker will go out of the way to advertise they are religious and vegetarian, and when confronted why they are serving not just meat, but also beef, they will say they are doing business. I would look forward to such two faced Indian businesses with Lakshmi Devi presiding over sale of beef to be thoroughly kicked in the butt as well, but it is hoping for too much.

Secularism rules by Ajay on 08 Jul 2009

Since it involves Hindu Gods and godesses, we, the Secular government of India and the Congress, the do called flag bearer of secularism will not do anything.

Not the first time by arun kumar on 08 Jul 2009

Bar with name "Nirvana bar" operate in many cities in Europe, even in India there is a coffee drink called "Nirvana". Take any Hindi film, a "Brahmin" as an astrologer is supporting a bad character - is there any protest? Words such as "YOG", "Ayurved", "Ram" are written as YOGA, Ayurveda, Rama - just foolishness - because in West they write so. I am very surprised at the Hindi accent of Indian children in Indian Cosmopolitan cities - those who can not speak their mother tongue correctly - can never be original thinkers or performers in life. Polished from outside but rotting inside. Indian Film actors and actresses whose bread and butter is 3rd grade hindi films - speak Hindi with such bad accent, and that surprises me how are they allowed to act in films? Simply snobbery and ungratefulness to culture.

hindi is not only language in india by prasanth on 09 Jul 2009

hello arun kumar, please not down that hindi is not only language in india...in hindi..u have different usage of names as against sanskrit..rama is spelt as ram...ayurveda as ayurved..in telugu, it is ayurvedam...

Time to show your protest.. by Jem Hassan on 08 Jul 2009

This quite fashion for Europenas to tarnish other faiths by showcasing such ads by justifying it 'freedom of expression'..when the offensive cartoons about prophet Muhammed(pbuh), somany enjoyed..but didn't how painful it is for others...now i can understand the pain of our Hindu brothers (not hypocrites like RSS/VHP/BD) and i urge them to signature their protest on it...my support is there for you!

Deja vu? by H J Khan on 08 Jul 2009

Doesn't the episode sound so much like the Danish cartoon episode lampooning Prophet Mohammad? Many people had criticised the violent outburst in response to the cartoons. But why should western nations shamefully look down upon and make fun of sacred symbols of other religions? Western society is not far removed from societies in developing countries when it comes to obscurantist and illogical beliefs (the Jackson ghost is the most recent instance, the earlier being innumerable instances of UFO sightings). What makes them deride cultural values of other societies and countries?

bcause Indian are weak by Ajay on 08 Jul 2009

This happens because Indians don't have guts to fight back. The govt would meekly accept whatever the treatment others give.
