History turns full circle for Advani

Nagpur History has turned full circle for BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani.

The former Deputy Prime Minister, who was forced by the RSS to quit as party chief three years back, has returned as the tallest leader for the Sangh without whose blessings the projection for the top executive job was just unthinkable.

81-year old Advani has become the best hope for the Sangh as the saffron forces seek to exorcise the ghost of the 2004 Lok Sabha election defeat.

The electoral setback coupled with the subsequent controversial remarks of Advani over Mohammed Ali Jinnah had led to a huge row leading to his exit as party chief on December 31, 2005.

Today, it is the anti-climax as the party's national executive and later the national council are meeting in Nagpur, also the RSS headquarters, to devise a winning strategy for Advani to become the next Prime Minister.

In fact, in recent months the RSS appears to have fully backed Advani as the battle for the Lok Sabha elections has come near.

There have been highs and lows in the political career of Advani and after the last Lok Sabha elections he had admitted that the party was going through a 'bad patch'.

Advani's ascendancy for the top job has come when party patriarch Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who is currently in a Delhi hospital, has taken a back seat on health grounds. Vajpayee, however, continues to be the chairman of the opposition NDA.

The actual rise of Advani started with the Ramjanmabhoomi movement and his Somnath to Ayodhya-Ram Rath Yatra, which brought BJP to the centrestage in the country's politics.

In fact, his leadership helped turn the national polity from unipolar to a bipolar one as he ensured that BJP becomes the second pole in national politics, dominated for decades by Congress.

Advani did take out some half-a-dozen yatras later but failed to have the same effect.

In 1977, Advani was the I&B minister in the then Janata Party government and was later Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in Vajpayee's regime.

Advani, as the top organiser of the party has been exhorting party men to have the "killer instinct" and now the saffron party really needs it.

This is so because in the last few months BJP's feel good factor has weaned away and the recent assembly elections showed that the party was still groping for a real issue.

Congress gained the upper hand in the assembly elections bagging four out of the six states which went to polls.

The challenge before Advani is not an easy one as the NDA is not in good shape as it was when the BJP won the last Lok Sabha elections in 1999.

Ten years have made a huge difference and parties like AIADMK, TDP, TRS, NC, on whose support the BJP was banking this time, have parted ways.

Trinamool Congress which has been part of the NDA till recently has suddenly turned lukewarm amid signals that its chief Mamta Banerjee was getting closer to Congress to take on the Marxists in their den.

Besides, BJP is friendless in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, the two states that helped the Congress to come to power at the Centre in 2004.

It has been a tough journey for Advani who came to Delhi as a young man from Karachi after partition and it is to be seen whether his dream to occupy 7, Race Course road becomes a reality.

Killer Instinct of Sangh Parivar by Satyamev Jayate on 06 Feb 2009

Advani has been exhorting his party men to have the "KILLER INSTINCT".A very telling phrase indeed ...!It reflects very aptly the Sangh Parivar attitude due to which they are the proud perpetrators of the 2002 Gujarat riots, Mumbai violence, 2007 and 2008 violence in Orissa against Christians, continuing violence in Karnataka, and other unaccounted bomb blasts (Malegaon, Ajmer, etc.) for which they manage to put the blame on others.Well said, Advaniji, well said!

He's the best choice for PM by Rohit Sharma on 06 Feb 2009

Advani is a educated, self made, hard working, committed and above all a nationalist, unlike either dynastic yuvrajs or puppet chamchaas, he gets my vote

Sena war by Mukul Dubey on 06 Feb 2009

If old man Advani becomes PM all fundamentalist groups like Ram sena, Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal, Vanara Sena, Hathi Sena, Sher Sena, Balu Sena will become a force like islamic groups under Ayatolla Komeni in Iran

India doesn't have too much of choice by Rohit Sharma on 06 Feb 2009

You may be partially right with some of what you wrote, but what about the other side, you have bunch of incompetent chamchaas, who have no decision making powers, administration is completely paralysed. If you read about the NDA Vs UPA progress in Infrastructure UPA did just 20% of what NDA did in 5 years. These people are just sitting on the seat, doing nothing..

A baseless person by Dr. Hemchand Rathore on 06 Feb 2009

Forget the educated, even the uneducated people will not vote this guy as our PM.

My vote to BJP. I think Modi should be PM though.

A Prime Minister Candidate by A.L.Chopra on 06 Feb 2009

BJP should come to power at the centre,if India is to be saved as a Nation. The congress has the policy of devide and rule and has been apeasing minorities for vote bank politics, has increased corruption in our country and has encouraged Gandhi/Nehru Family rule.Advani is a true nationalist and under his guidance India will progress. But as many considered leaders have left BJP since it has been out of power at the Centre,he needs to really work hard in remaining few months to bring BJP back in power at the centre.

Well, do consider seriously, I beg by Surendra on 06 Feb 2009

Why not Mr Thackeray for PM I say, it will be such a change ! He is ever so eager to lay his hands on the country's enemies, is it not so? Well, we need someone to look into that aspect IMMEDIATELY. But I assure you, if he is elected we are bound to see a lot of fireworks. That will awaken most of the sleepy Hindustanis, for sure. Your turn, please.

wHAT? by RAMDEV on 06 Feb 2009

Surendra, you are below matric level, because if you chose these sorts, then the international forces are bound to attack India as they have done in Afghanistan to end terror and terrorists.

But Jaylalitha by Surendra on 06 Feb 2009

My matric level or even worse apart, what would be the level who chose JL? I think you are the best person to judge. Why do most of you not think of sharing views instead of launching personal attacks?

Mr. Advani as a PM by Individualistic on 06 Feb 2009

you are talking about Mr. Advani just like a tree without roots. You even won't wish to count people who are dedicated for country in BJP.A person who is projecting himself as a future PM does not know what is the future of his own team(Party-BJP).Each

We do not need this man to represent us. by Nautankee on 06 Feb 2009

Sir, you may remember, that Advani and fernandes are stripped searched in evey decent country of the world.A person like him on the PM chair will not only be a disgrace to us Hindu's but a shame as well. This man has sent all kinds of wrong signals to the entire world.

2009 elections by M.R. Prakash on 06 Feb 2009

The election of Prime Minister in coming election will only prove the choice of Indians towards 20's (young) or 80's (old) . We ought to miss some one in the age group of 50?. The congress winning will have 20 years man as the soul no matter who would be named as the so called PM-Ind. Electing Advani as PM would mean an packed up cricket ground with out players. Yes there would be people watching for nail biting finish of cricket played without players.

Only BJP Can Save The Nation Now, Congress Will Be a Disaster by Indian on 06 Feb 2009

If UPA comes to power at next elections, India will be wiped out before their term ends next. Successive Congress governments have grossly neglected National Security both in terms of strengthening the Defence forces as well as allowing terrorism to grow unhindered and spread to every nook and corner of the nation. Only the BJP can save the nation now.

Hawalebaaz as our PM? Are you joking? by Gautam Lal Pandya on 06 Feb 2009

Sir, God forbid that this man (Advani) would become our PM, because if he is elected then we Hindu's would be considered as taliban or al-qaida likes.Advani and BJP are role models of every goonda like person who believes in destroying Mosques, burning Churches, raping or killing fellow human being, who like us 'Hindu's were born and brought up in India.Right under Vajpaee and Advani's nose, the BJP leaders allotted the petrol pumps to own relatives or sanghi members. The entire story seems to state, that by playing the desh bhakti or our Hindu jaap, they have been, like bagla bhagats, looting the poor people of our country. While the children of India slept without proper food and shelter, but these nincompoops ate nine course meals at nine star hotels and all of it was paid by us tax payers.Advani has earlier been accused for having links to the terrorist Dawood Ibrahim, a lover of Jinnah, and his presumed involvement in Hawala cannot be ignored.

As if congressmen are angels! by Ram nath Babu on 06 Feb 2009

You have accused BJP and its leader Advani for corruption, nepotism and even hawala links! If somebody has underworld links, it is the NCP leader Sharad Pawar with whom congress is sharing the power. This is a fact everybody knows. The fact of the matter is that we Indians do not deserve democracy. If somebody tries to inculcate a semblance of a discipline, you will say that they are going to stone-age. YOu people are bent upon to imitating west - that too only bad things from the west, while good thins are ignored. It is better if you do not talk about nepotism. There are more skeletons in the cupboard of congress than that of BJP. Even try to do a soul searching exercise and you will find that YOU ARE THE BIGGEST HYPOCRAT as far as nepotism is concerned.Babu

Best wishes advaniji by Rajesh on 06 Feb 2009

Why should we keep this option ourselves, You try to accept the fact that BJP can only save the country. Congress should not be thrown out from the centre as no good thing will happen with the congress party.
