A year after it installed biometrics-based Attendance and Access Control Systems for its offices in North Block, Lok Nayak Bhawan and Jaisalmer House in New Delhi, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has decided to install Biometrics Access Control Devices for the computer systems in the buildings. It has invited bids for 100 such devices.

The idea to install these devices, sources said, is essentially to protect MHA computer systems from unauthorised access. Once these devices are added to the computers, only those users who have their fingerprints registered with the system will have access. These devices are also expected to record the data of all users who access the machines.

The MHA is looking for devices that can operate in temperatures ranging between 10 to 50 degrees Celsius and humidity of upto 90 per cent, offer a verification time of less than one second, and have a power source from one of the computer’s ports.

The MHA has also clarified that it is looking for companies who have a “vast experience in the field of providing solutions for applications of Biometric Access Control Devices in personal computers and laptops” and have “presence in major government offices, public sector and private sector companies”. Bidders will have to provide adequate documentary evidence to prove that they have provided similar equipments to other organisations.

A Technical Evaluation Committee (TEC) constituted for this purpose will examine the technical bids, and bidders will have to demonstrate their products before the TEC. The MHA is open to bids till July 26.
