Angry people took to streets damaging municipal buses and stoning police personnel as the Narendra Modi government faced intense criticism over one of the worst hooch tragedies in the state which is a dry state.
The fatalities could go up further after the tragedy unfolded on Tuesday since some of those hospitalised after consuming the spurious brew are in a serious condition, police said.
"The death toll due to consumption of spurious liquor has risen to 86," police control room officials said. Over 100 people are under treatment in various hospitals.
People from different parts of the city like Odhav, Amraiwadi, Raipur, Rakhial and Raipur continued to be admitted to hospitals.
The mounting deaths sparked public anger as protests were held in different parts of the city and the state against the inaction of police and government on illegal liquor dens.
Residents in Odhav area came out on streets, damaged municipal buses, pelted stone on police and burnt the effigies of Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Minister of State of Home Amit Shah.
The police in a coordinated crackdown on illegal liquor dens across the state arrested more than 450 bootleggers. The hooch tragedy rocked the state Assembly for the second day today with the opposition Congress voicing strong protests.

Congress desperately looking for Modi's displacement. It failed to please masses by showcasing "post-Godhra riots". Now they are taking "Hooch tragedy" to blame Modi. However, they should remember that it happened several times (1977, 1980, 1988, 1989 and 1990) in the past when Congress government was ruling the state. I suspect that they might be the culprits behind this tragedy. Their attitude can be seen while they are ransacking government property.
THE PEOPLE WHO ARE DRINKING THE ALCOHOL SHOULD LEARN FROM THESE INCIDENTS AN IMPORTANT LESSON THAT, MAY BE THEY WILL BE THE VICTIMS NEXT DAY. SO CARE FUL . WHY YOU ARE DRINKING IT AND BECOME THE HATRED ONE BY THE SOCEITY AND FAMILY AND EVEN BY YOU WIFE AND CHILDRENS?
SO, WE HAVE ARRESTED A FEW PEOPLE AND DESTROYED A FEW HOOCH DENS. SO WHAT? VERY SOON THERE WILL BE DIFFERENT LOCATIONS FOR DISTRIBUTION OF HOOCH. ALSO, ALL THE PEOPLE ARRESTED WILL SLOWLY GET BAIL AND WILL BE IN BUSINESS SOON. IT WILL BE THINGS BACK TO WHERE IT WAS TILL ANOTHER HOOCH TRAGEDY. NOTHING HAS CHANGED AND WILL EVER CHANGE.
Why did they consume the liquor? Didn't they know its prohibited in the state? Why should the government now be solely blamed?
make the state wet now. enough of gandhigiri. blame has to be owned by all prvious administrations including modi.
In poor country like India, any think that is dangerous and un healthy for human consumption should be banned, including alchohol
Very sad, hope we learn the value of life.
The only option is to suspend all the police officers in which ever area such dens are found. Even today on 9th July 2009 it is possible to get whichever brand of liquor you want in Vadodara. This opporturnity will only be used to lift ban on liquor.
It is true that spurious liquor could not be made without some level of collusion from the political and governmental echelons. It is also true that any kind of alcohol can be bought in Gujarat irrespective of your religious or political affiliation. But here is the tough question: Did these people who consumed the spurious liquor not know about the prohibition? An even tougher question: Wouldnt punishing the victims actually be far more effective? Even USA gave up with prohibition because people tend to consume more at such times and the State ends up losing revenue. Right now, the only people getting rich are those who deal this alcohol and the ones they bribe to be able to do so.
Gujarat, in fact ,is the wettest state in the country where liqour is freely available, if one has the means and contacts. Its only the poor who can not afford so called IMFL, fall prey to hooch tragedies.Mahathma gandhi has been long forgotten in this state, yet in his name, the powers be would not act sanely and lift prohibition. To claim Gujarat is a dry state is not only travsty of truth , but also joke of the millenium. The other joke is , apart from the self styled gandiates rooting for prohibition, the section which wants the prohibition to continue are the exice and police depts, for reasons not difficult to guess. As some wise man once said that" India mostly suffers from self inflicted misceries than inflicted by others", this is one such example to prove he is right
Were the law enforceament people waiting for this tragedy to happen? How did they manage to corner 300 bootleggers and close scores of illicit liquor stores in just 2 days? That's because they have all the information but are so corrupt that even the law of the state means nothing to them. Poor people have died but who is answerable? Absolutely disgusting....
IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO HAVE THE ILLEGAL HOOCH FACTORIES WITHOUT PROTECTION FROM THE HIGHER UPS IN MINISTRY. EVEN THE POLICEMEN CANNOT PROTECT THEM. SO TRY TO GET THE TOP MAN FIRST.
Off late, Mr. Modi is losing not only his popularity but his grip over the governance of the state also. He is now no where to be seen in the heigher eclelons of BJP and no one cares to what he says. It is true that these kind of hooch-tragedies could happen in any state but they have the magnanimity of accept and feel sorry for it. Here is a 'winbag' at the helm of the affairs who could do no wrong and was eugolized for his examplary administration from all the ramparts of BJP. Gujrat is a state which was proud of its liquor ban. Suspension of few officers or the sham shaow of inquiry commission would not erase the stigma of bad governance.
It clearaly shows the extent to which all our policemen have become corrupt and negligent in their duties. Some distiller and policement will be held responsible for the tragdy and prosecuted. The courts will take two decades to decide the case and most probably everybody involved will be let free for want of reliable evidnce.
