Kolkata, March 11 Two persons, including a former city police constable, were injured when two unidentified miscreants opened fire and threw bombs at them near Konnagar in Hooghly on Tuesday morning. The constable was discharged from duty after being accused in two separate cases of molestation and rape. The motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained. No arrests have been made, police said.

According to reports, Gopal Das (33), the former police constable, was standing in front of his cyber cafe at Kanaipur near Konnagar when two youths fired bullets at him around 10.30 am. Das sustained injuries on his head and chest. Some witnesses tried to chased the miscreants before they could open fire again.

The two unknown persons also threw bombs to scare the locals and fled the spot.

A vegetable vendor, Musha Ali (36), was injured in the bombing.

Kanaipur police reached the spot and rushed Ali and Das to Uttarpara State General Hospital. Das was later shifted to RG Kar Hospital as he was in a critical condition, said police.

Das has lodged a complaint but no one has been arrested yet. Police have raided some places near Kanaipur, but have not received any clues.

Das has also failed to provide any lead regarding the miscreants, said police. Locals told the police that the youths, who fired at Das, had been suspiciously moving in the area since morning.

"We learnt that Das has enmity with some local promoters. They might have hired goons to kill Das," said a senior district police officer.

Das was posted at the city police's 8th Battalion. Tapan Mitra, deputy commissioner of the city police's 8th Battalion, said, "Das had been arrested twice by the Baranagar and Barrackpur police in connection with two separate cases of rape and outraging the modesty of a woman. He was put under suspension and a departmental probe was initiated against him. He was finally dismissed from service on February 19."
