Kolkata, February 12 Four government-run buses and a couple of ambulances were damaged and the MR Bangur hospital ransacked by a mob following the death of a schoolboy in a road accident near Menaka Cinema on SP Mukherjee Road-Abdul Rashid Road crossing on Tuesday afternoon.

The accident took place around 1.55 pm when Bibek Sardar (16), a Class IX student of Deshapran Birendranath Institution at Mudiali, was on way back home on his bicycle. He was a resident of Private Gali on Prince Anwar Shah Road.

Police said that a speeding vehicle allegedly ran him over leaving the boy in a pool of blood, possibly injuring his head. Locals rushed him to the MR Bangur Hospital in Tollygunge where he succumbed to injuries after 45 minutes.

Bibek had gone to school to eat ‘khichri prasad’ of goddess Saraswati, which was not served to him as he was not in his school uniform. The accident took place while he was on his way home to change to his uniform, school sources said.

Immediately after the doctors pronounced him dead, locals of Private Gali started ransacking the hospital alleging negligence by doctors and the hospital staff. Others joined them in damaging government-run buses.

Police said that the mob damaged a Volvo bus, a CTC bus of Barasat-Tollygunge route, a Surface Transport department bus and another of route number 6. The blockade, which caused serious traffic disruption in the afternoon, was later lifted by police.

Bonani Sardar, Bibek’s relative, said: “He died as he was not attended to by doctors for a long time after he was brought here. Timely medical attention could have saved his life.”

North 24 Parganas’ Chief Medical Officer of Health, Sachidananda Sarkar, said, “The mob damaged ambulances, the electronic display machine and some other equipment at the hospital’s emergency unit.” Praveen Kumar, South 24 Parganas’ Superintendent of Police, however, said that there was no incident of ransacking the hospital or damaging its property.
