He moves in an air-conditioned Indica and his wife owns three trucks worth around Rs 60 lakh. He flaunts costly cellphones, which he changes frequently and provides lakhs in loans to people.

Dubey’s lifestyle befits that of a senior MNC executive. But he happens to be a Head Constable in the Uttar Pradesh Police and his salary is Rs 15,000 per month.

On Tuesday, Senior Superintendent of Police Akhil Kumar sent a report to DIG Lucknow Range, recommending a probe by Anti-Corruption wing against the head constable for allegedly “amassing disproportionate wealth against his known income.”

Dubey has now gone into hiding and the police are yet to trace him.

Attention would not have been drawn to Dubey’s wealth if Arvind Verma, a local businessman, had not filed a complaint against him at the Gomti Nagar police station on June 21. In his complaint, Verma had alleged that he borrowed Rs 5 lakh from Dubey four years ago at a whopping interest rate of 10 per cent per month.

He said though he paid back Rs 18 lakh over the last three years, the head constable is now insisting that he either pay the capital back or continue with the monthly installments.

“He used to come with four goons and threaten me,” Verma told The Indian Express. Verma, who owns a furniture showroom at Vibhuti Khand in Gomti Nagar, added that Dubey has lent Rs 50 lakh to several other people in the city.

Dubey’s family members, meanwhile, feigned ignorance about his whereabouts. His wife told The Indian Express that her husband had purchased the house last year.

“Ye makaan hum pichle saal kharide the. Lagbhag 35 lakh ka ye makaan hume pada hoga, par mere husband ko sahi pata hai (We had purchased this house last year. We had bought this for around Rs 35 lakh. My husband, however, has the exact figures),” she said.

SSP Kumar said he is waiting for the reports from ASP, Police Lines and the Gomti Nagar Circle Officer about the head constable’s activities.

Inspector General (IG) of Lucknow Zone, AK Jain, said he has started receiving complaints, especially against junior-level policemen, about their involvement in money-lending in various districts.
