Kolkata, March 26 The state CID arrested Karman Akmal on Wednesday in connection with the abduction of Howrah-based businessman Sriram Buchasia.

IG (SOG), CID, Rajiv Kumar said: “Karman Akmal, who was involved in facilitating the abduction, was arrested from the city. We are looking for a woman as well.”

Meanwhile, a Mumbai police team will be coming to Kolkata to interrogate Sadab Siddiqui, the mastermind behind the abduction, which took place on March 8. Siddiqui was arrested on March 19.

“Previously, he was arrested by the Mumbai police for his involvement in an abduction case. But during the test identification parade, he fled. So, a team from Mumbai police is coming to interrogate him,” Kumar said.

Along with Siddiqui and Akmal, one Mohammed Khalid was also involved in the abduction. Khalid met Buchasia in Asansol. The trio, along with bar dancer Nidhi, planned to abduct him, a source in the CID said.

Sadab introduced himself as a watch trader to Buchasia and showed interest in doing business with him. Buchasia agreed to the proposal. He was later introduced to Nidhi.

On March 3, Nidhi called Buchasia to her flat in Jagacha, where Khalid, Siddiqui and Akmal were also present. They then took Buchasia to an apartment in Bangur, where he was kept till they received a ransom of Rs 40 lakh,” a CID officer said.

Khalid collected the ransom on March 17 and the Buchasia returned home the next day.

Khalid was traced to Asansol in Burdwan district and arrested on March 18. On the basis of his statement, Siddqui was arrested on March 19. The CID was able to recover Rs 23 lakh of the ransom from the Bangur flat.
