Jammu, January 25: Chief commander of the Harkat-ul-Jihad (HuJI) and master-mind of the serial UP court blasts, Bashir Ahmed Aigazi alias Saba was gunned down in an encounter in Chatroo area of Kishtwar district in Jammu region on Thursday night.

Revealing this, official sources said that the killed chief commander of the HuJI was the mastermind behind the serial UP court blasts in November, 2007. This was also confirmed by the Inspector General of Police, Jammu zone, Dr S P Vaid.

Official sources revealed that the Jammu and Kashmir police had been tracking him for quite some time. Sources said that based on specific information last evening J&K police in a joint operation with security forces launched an offensive in which they got the top commander of HuJI.

A satellite phone was also recovered from the encounter site, sources revealed. Police are searching for further clues about him in the encounter area.

Aigazi was among one of the most sought-after militants in the Valley, who had managed to evade authorities for decades, Vaid said adding that Bashir Ahmed Aigazi received militant training in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Bashir joined militant ranks in 1992, and crossed over to the other side of the territory and got militant training in PoK as well as camps in Afghanistan. He was an instructor in one of the training camps, and a sought after terrorist. He was arrested in 2000 but released in 2002 and since then had been working for the HuJI, official sources added.
