Husain's painting Battle of Ganga and Jamuna: Mahabharata 12 was bought by an anonymous buyer at the auction of Asian Modern and Contemporary art by the Christie's on Thursday.
This was a world auction record for any contemporary Indian painting, said the Christie's which had valued the work at USD 600,000.
Husain's another work Mother Teresa, painted in 1997, was also among the top ten best sellers and went for USD 205,000 at the auction of Asian Modern and Contemporary art.
It fetched the ninth highest bid.
Husain's paintings were auctioned amid a noisy demonstration against him outside the venue. Supporters of the Indian American Intellectual Forum held the protest demanding withdrawal of the works of the noted artist from the auction, accusing Husain of depicting Hindu gods and goddesses in a "derogatory and vulgar" form.
"Shame on Husain," and "Husain - Fugitive from Law," read some of the placards carried by the protesters during the two-hour demonstration in which Hindu Janjagruti Samiti also joined.
Earlier, the auction house had rejected the demand of the Forum to withdraw Husain's paintings from the auction.
"Art and culture embraces multiple interpretations and re-interpretations of religious and ethnic symbols that are often highly individual expressions," Christie's spokesperson Sara Fox had said.
At Thursday's auction, Ram Kumar's Vagabond (1956) fetched USD 1.16 million, the second highest bid. This was the world auction record for the artist.
At the third place was Tyeb Mehta's Untitled (1981) which attracted a bid of USD 657,000. Francis Newton Souza's Untitled (1961) attracted the fourth highest bid at USD 385,000.
Syed Haider Raza's Bindu Pancha Tatva, 1999, was sold for USD 361,000, followed by TV Santhosh's, Traces of an Ancient Error, 2007 (USD 337,000), Rameshwar Broota's Traces of Man I, 1995 (USD 265,000), Atul Dodiya's Untitled, 2004 (USD 217,000) and Akbar Padamsee's Metascape, 2005 (USD 193,000).
Overall, Chirstie's auctioned 111 of 125 paintings offered at a total price of USD 10,974,000.

RatingWhy cant he paint himself and his family nude and leave it for auction,then also everyone will appreciate his artistic sense and aesthetic appeal,and those who tell it is a part of Hindu culture,show me one household who worship photo of Goddeses nude, or the main deity(not those apsaras) in a temple of worship is nude.

Why is MF Husein singularly targetted?! Why not target other painters who draw similar paintings?! What about the sculptures of Nude Hindu Goddesses in various temples and caves and tourist spots?!
Nude sculptures in some hindu temples are fine work of art and nothing to do with God. No where we have God in Nude and never its feminine form like Sita Durga ganga Jamuna. Go and see Khajurao if you are not afraid of the threats in Quran before making such an illiterate comment
Just like sick minded artist, there are sick minded collectors too! The man who shall be tried and persecuted the way Taslima Nasrin persecuted by pscudo secular government of India and their commi supporters. But India only you can get away with insulting Hindus only, when some make statement or paint offensive to other faith, it is become disturbing peace as those faith followers are comming out to rampage the life. A nude painting of Prophet Mohd is in circulation and this should be put for auction and see what happens
Unfortunately there are no photographs available of Prophet Mohd(PUBH) to put it on the canvas. However the Hindu goddesses are all over the temples and tourist spots in India. In Hinduism the picture worship and drawings are encouraged where as Islam does'nt encourage picture or Idol worship.
Come on RS, did you know that in Hyderabad, there was riots when english daily published story of mentally challenge boy with name Mohammad. Muslim come out to rampage the street and the editor was force to write appology! Is it not common to have Mohmmad name in Muslims then why rioting on the street? When MF Hussain draw those picture he did not draw out of respect for the deity that is for sure....he could have drawn similar picture for his Mom or daughter, all would have understood his artist mind. Do you know that "Allah" is actually one of the Syrian God that Mohammad was worshiped and distroy other representions from Mecca shrine? So all Muslims are doing is worshiping one sectarian God of Syria called "ALLah"! After 1400 year you have write (PBHU) whenever Prophet is mentions....does that mean all his living life he was restless and compromised? It is said that India is not able to honour and protect its own son who's artistic work finds respect and value in the outside world. The communal hindu bigots are after his blood for depicting the natural beauty of the women on the canvas. What if he has created such artistic beauty of so called hindu godess when they are already there in various temples and tourist spots. I am sure there was no lust or ill feelings when he created this art. I cannot understand the Hindu's in India are all for the protection of Taslima Nasreen but do not want to accept their own brother just becos he drew their goddesses on the canvas. What a communal and intolerant attitude of Hindus in India???

Anybody offending the goddess we worship thereby hurting our religious sentiments need to be cautioned and restrained from carrying out such work. There was lot of anger in some region's when Danish news paper published cartoons depicting a religious figure however those people are silent on people like this character who deliberately goes on depicting goddess some worship in semi nude way's. This is irresponsibel. The indian goverment doesn't take care of it..sad.
Really it shocking in USA, hindus are more concern about there religion and culture. Now in our country it is just reverse.U see the true nature of missionaries, they convert anything by alurement to innocent tribal, dalit. eally speaking if u have anything to say about hindus/hinduiesm, they have to justify the same.
