Phulbani (Kandhamal) "I am sorry...," Home Minister P Chidambaram today told Kandhamal riot victims during a visit to one of the relief camps in Phulbani.

The Home Minister, who is on a two-day visit to Orissa, met the victims living in relief camps set up after a series of communal clashes following the killing of 85-year-old VHP leader Swami Laxmananda Saraswati in August last year.

"I am sorry that certain things happened last year and you have been brought to these camps. But you must go back to your villages. I am here to tell you, don't fear," he said.

Condemning the incident, Chidambaram asked them to start life afresh, build the churches and practice their religion.

"Whatever happened was wrong. Build your churches and practice your dharma," he said.

When some refugees spoke of fear of RSS and Bajrang Dal, the Home Minister assured then that the guilty will be "prosecuted and punished."

"All those who have indulged in this ghastly crime will be prosecuted and punished," he said. The Home Minister visited Mandaika, Rahikola, Tinigia and Tikabali camps in the district providing shelter to about 1500 people.

Decency in politics by Robin on 06 Jul 2009

Chidambaram has once again proved that he is a decent politician. Instead of defending what went wrong he has admitted and said sorry for that. He had expressed his noble heart when he pardoned the sikh journalist who threw chappal on him. In fact the decency of leaders such as Sonia, Rahul, Chidambaram, etc bring good name to the Congress and that was one of the reasons why Congress won the 2009 parliamentary electon. The more personal attacks congress leaders get more votes they get.

Unethical law by Robin on 06 Jul 2009

The law that disallow dalit christians from getting reservation benefits is discriminatory.

I am sorry: Chidambaram :Understand the truth by Deepak Shenoy on 28 Jun 2009

First, Thank you Mr.Chidambaram for being humble enough to admit the failure of the government to protect and guard the weaker section of soceity.Secondly, in reply to Truth and N.V.Sankaran, please do not talk about things you do not understand. It only succeeds in making you look stupid. Hindu religion is a most valued inheritance of India and so is Christianity and Islam. People like you are are religious nuts and bigots. Maryada Purushottam Ram was bowing to his step mothers before bowing to his own mother. Have learnt something from that? Please keep a Gita, a Bible and Koran with same reverance and try to converse with Sri Ram.Let me know, if you can identify with his person, Kausalya, Kaikeyi and Sumitra.Beauty of India and the Glory of India is to be beheld from its unity in diversity.Jai Sri Ram.

Understand the truth by N.V.SANKARAN on 18 Jul 2009

Thank you for educating me about Hinduism!! But, it still does not answer my question, " Will the HM show enough decency to apologize to the friends and disciples of Slain Swami Lakshmanandji". Don't you know, the PM had, before the elections, declared that "Muslims should have preferential access to the national resources"? There many more actions or words which I can cite to show how the government is appeasing the minorities, while being secular, it should treat every citizen with the same equality. Poverty does not discriminate people on the basis of religion. Then, why is the government discriminating poor people on the basis of religion?

$ 7 BILLION CONVERSION BY 5000 CHRISTIAN MISSIONARIES IN INDIA IS THE GREATEST THREAT by n Krishna on 28 Jun 2009

Mrs. Veena Noble Das, V.C. of Padmavati Mahila University in Tirupathi forced students to convert and some girls committed suicide. Such torturing of students reportd even in the prestigious IITs. In the last five years 28000 out of total 38000 temples in Andhra Pradesh has been proposed to be close where as churches are growing in leaps and bounds.India is being converted into a Christian country as per the Pope has ordained. More than 5,000 foreign Christian Missionaries are working round the clock to convert India to Christianity. $ 7 billion dollars have been poured in to India for conversion which is the gravest danger that India is facing. Christian symbols is being printed on currency notes and coins. The Bharat Mata emblem on the two-rupee coin was replaced by a Cross. Logo of the Kendriya Vidyalaya, the lotus with rising sun was replaced by Cross and Crescent. In many government stationeries, the word 'Satyameva Jayate' which is our Vedic slogan has been deleted.

$ 7 BILLION by Emmanuel on 24 Aug 2009

Christianity is against forced conversion. Why should people send "$ 7 BILLION" from around the world or the USA to force convert Indians? What would they gain? Anyone forced to convert will go back to his own religion as soon as he gets a chance. The Christian Bible clearly says "Man has to come to God on his own will". There are lots of "christians" who swindle money in the name of conversion. I think these "christians" are actually against the Christian Faith and they can’t convert anyone in real sense. Indian Express, please don’t let these kind of baseless statistics to be posted.

for GEORGE, RAVI, JEANATTE and others by Chandra SG on 28 Jun 2009

for GEORGE:Your narrow thinking and fanaticism and bigotry is the root cause of lot of problems surrounding religion in India. In the name of 'love' and forgiveness.. you are spreading hatred against the VEDIC sanatana dharma.. The act of machineries in spending millions of dollars for conversion is nothing but using JESUS name for ulterior motives of CHURCH.Ravi:You dont know History and sacrifices of RSS for Kashmir.. doesn't make all the great work RSS and its great leaders like Shyam prasad Mukherjee did for Kashmir.. the fruits of which today we are all enjoying.. I dont know why you people weep about the 'inaction' of BJP-led NDA rule.. COnveniently forgeting the crisis that surrounded nation during that period (Kargill war, Economic downturn post Sep. 11 etc.) India was growing at 4% in 1998 and by end of BJP rule it was growing at 8-9% (2004). UPA has enjoyed the benefits of the good work initiated by BJP led govt. Its misrule left India back to 5% growth stage

Narrow Thinking by Emmanuel on 24 Aug 2009

Why can’t the Hindus give up there narrow thinking? I can’t believe some human actually accepts burning of other humans

The converted ‘Pana’ Christians of Orissa wanted reservation meant for Hindus by n.krishna on 28 Jun 2009

An official direction issued in 1999, by a senior Orissa IAS officer Livinus Kindo, to all district magistrates in Orissa to record all christians as ‘Santhal Christians’ as a method to usurp the reservation meant for Hindu tribals to the christians of Orissa. This organized fraud by the church controlled christian IAS officer is eating away the reservation meant for SC/ST communities of India. This method is used for the IIT admissions by the christians since independence. The christians claim that there is no caste system in Christianity, but in reality, the caste system is so bad that lower caste converts have to go to their own churches and not admitted to the upper caste christian churches in India. The converted ‘Pana’ Christians of Orissa wanted reservation meant for Hindus and for this were trying to get re-enlisted as Scheduled Tribe by manipulating a notification by the President of India under Article 342 of the Constitution

CHRISTIAN STUDENTS IN IITs WITH SC/ST RESERVATION by n.krishna on 28 Jun 2009

In Orissa, the RS member, Radhakanta Nayak who is blamed for the murder of 84 year old Hindu seer, Swami Laxmananda Saraswati in the tenth attempt on August 23, 2008, got in to IAS by fake SC/ST certificate. Many IAS IPS officers in India are christians but maintain Hindu names and got in to these central government cadres. Some 600 Christian Government servants belonging to Kandhamal alone have produced fake SC/ST certificates to get jobs. Lakhs of christians enjoy quota benefits including IITs and had seen personally that these SC/ST students with Hindu names go to the church on Sundays and they get lot of help from the christian Dean and other christian professors working in the IITS. Ajit Jogi produced fake certificates and joined IAS.

Minority Appeasement by r.koyatan on 28 Jun 2009

Leaders like Chidambaram have destroyed our country's culture. They always aim their and their families benefit not the poor one. Had they cared poor and worked for poorers benefit, our country would have developed long years ago. All should be trated equal without any discrimination. All problems started when a few filthy politician started appeasment of certain section which will lead to divide the society/country in the name of religion.

DIVISION BY CASTE by B S GANESH, BANGALORE on 28 Jun 2009

In my humble opinion most of the problems of the country hinges on division of people on religion, caste reservation etc. Problems can be minimised if all are treated equal and main focus should be to uplift the poor people based on family conditions and attacking corruption.B S GANESH, BANGALORE

I am sorry: Chidambaram tells Kandhamal riot victims by N.V.SANKARAN on 28 Jun 2009

This was expected since the Congress won the elections because of their minority appeasement policies. Every post poll analyst was equivocal in concluding that the UPA won so many seats because the Minorities voted in very large numbers. Will the home minister show enough decency to apologize to the next of kin of Swami Lakshamananda and his disciples who were brutally murdered by some people which caused the riots?

Understand the truth by Truth on 28 Jun 2009

Let people who believe there is only one path understand this - this whole book came into existence only 2000 years back, what about the people who lived before that - are they all rotting ? If so, is the god not biased that he let so many people to rot ? Its sad to see many indians accepting this untruthful word without ever using their brains. Just the other day, they found flutes in germany which were 35000 years old, so you can see how long man has existed. And its to sad to see people believing that the only way is that of a person who came 2000 years back, ignoring all the people who lived between 35000 years and 2000 years..Sad.

Christians by Maurice on 28 Jun 2009

Christians have significantly contributed to the India in all respects. The conversion bogey has no basis. The over all the percentage of 2%Christians to total population have not increased for last 50 years.

CONVERSION ROOT CAUSE OF VIOLENCE by J.N.Mahanty on 27 Jun 2009

"Service to Humanity is Service to God" If the Christian Missionaries believe in the said proverb, what is the need for Converting the Poor Tribals, thru allurement/false promises/deceit??Missionaries must stop their Conversion Agenda to ensure lasting peace in Kandhmal and other tribal Areas.

CONVERSION ROOT CAUSE OF VIOLENCE by Emmanuel on 24 Aug 2009

If "Service to Humanity is Service to God" why cant the Hindus go the these Poor Tribals and help them?

Sorry came very late by INDIAN on 27 Jun 2009

BJD WON BECAUSE OF BREAKING TIES WITH BJP. CONGRESS LOSS DUE TO CONGRESS WAS LATE IN SHELTERING VICTIMS. ORISSA PEOPLE RESPECT EACH OTHERS RELIGION. ORISSA PEOPLE HAS VOTED FOR PEACE.

RELIGION IS THE CAUSE OF ALL TERRORISM IN THIS WORLD. by n.krishna on 27 Jun 2009

CHRISTIAN LOVE IS THE MOST DANGEROUS THING IN THE WORLD.THIS LOVE HAS KILLED THE ABORGINS OF AUSTRALIA, THE RED INDIANS IN USA,CANADA WHERE SMALL POX INFECTED BLANKETS ARE DISTRIBUTED TO KILL OFF THE POPULATION. 12 MILLION AFRICANS BECAME SLAVES BY THE CHRISTIAN LOVE.THE 1560 GOA INQUISITION KILLED THOUSAND OF HINDUS IN THE NAME OF CHRISTIAN LOVE AND CAUSED POPULATION SHIFT. THE WORLD DOES NOT REQUIRE ANY MORE RELIGIOUS LOVE OR COVERSION. CHRISTIAN LOVE KILLED 6 MILLION JEWS AND THE TOTAL CHRISTIAN LOVE HAS RESULTED IN THE KILLING OF 50 CRORE HUMANS SO FAR.RECENTLY TWO NUNS WERE JAILED FOR THE GENOCIDE IN AFRICA IN WHICH 8 LAKH TUTSIS WERE KILLED IN A SPAN OF 100 DAYS.

THE CHRISTIAN CONVERSION ACTIVITIES SHOULD BE STOPPED IN INDIA by n.krishna on 27 Jun 2009

Swami Laxmananda Saraswati in the tenth attempt on August 23, 2008. He was targeted by the missionaries, who are converting the Hindu tribals. The police version was that hewas murdered by the christian Maoists. There were reports that very senior congress politicians are involved in his murder. There was no efforts to investigate and bring the culprits to book. The conversion activities of Kerala christians in Orissa is causing great harm to the integrity of our nation, like that is going on in North East. bit.ly/48UGeY

pc is sorry by mouli on 27 Jun 2009

Hi Folks PC says sorry. good for india. But then in all fairness he shuld say sorry to the sikhs who were murdered by congress thugs in 1984. I am sorry: Chidambaram tells Kandhamal riot victims by Jeanette on 27 Jun 2009

Dear Mr. P Chidambaram,I always respected you for your contribution to India as Finance Minister. But I am surprised that you are doing an excellent job as Home Minister as well. You have set the right trend by giving assurance to people about taking care of their safety, that means a lot to the minorities, they can now live with a sense of security. I humbly ask that the same security be given to the Dalits, Muslims and the down trodden people of India (whatever their religion may be). Thank you Sir.

Religion by RN on 27 Jun 2009

Dear Mr. George, Does your Bible say that you need to convert the people to serve them? It is a naked truth that Christian Missionary receiving funds from abroad is used to spread christinity in India in the name of charity. Advasis in India are not born as Christians, but for the conversion that they are now christians. Not only Bible, every book - Gita, Quran, etc. also teach love - If it was not for the love

Justice by Abbas on 27 Jun 2009

It is shocking to read some of the comments here. Isn’t it the duty of government to protect the citizen? Any if some one from government owning responsibility for failure and apologizing what is wrong.Does these people objecting to Chidambaram apology justifying killing of innocent people? Do they believe in legal justice system or mob justice?

BJP supporters very upset by cs on 27 Jun 2009

Right wing lunatics, as usual are very upset with this. They haven't learnt their leasons from the recent elections. People want peace harmony and development.

Intolerance in Christianity is the cause of disharmony by venkat on 27 Jun 2009

I think Christians have committed the most atrocities. Wherever they went, they destroyed the natives. The same is happening in Kandhamal. Christians should ask for forgiveness for the goan inquisition, for destroyings the native americans, the aborigines, the africans, enslaving, and decimating those ancient cultures. It is high time they redeem and atone for killing tens of millions of innocents in the name of Christianity.

Chidambaram's Saree!! by senthilkumar on 27 Jun 2009

What else to expect of a mediocre politician, whose very elected candidature is questioned in the court?Soon after he took over the Home ministry inspite of his dismal performance in the Finance Ministry earlier, his first impertinent statement was about the poor performance of his predecessor Shivraj Patil. While the people and the country expected him to show better performance his comments about his predecessor was unwarranted and looked odd.In everyway and in every utterance he shows his immaturity. How is he going to arrest the sudden surge of Terrorism all over the country?

Christian India by j swarup on 27 Jun 2009

The so called murder of swamy has no political sympathy, but any inconvenience to minorities, must be highlighted to all. Kashmir Pundits need to be massacured as Christian India deserves that. No government shall need to have any concerns on Hindus!! Hindus get what you deserve, by electing Congress !

Thankyou for your kind words by Gman on 27 Jun 2009

Dear Mr Chidambaram, I appreciate you using those kind words to bring confidence to the people in releif camps . For the kind of trauma and fear they have been through , only an assurance from some one at your level can make them move out of relief camps .What next ?. Please deliver Justice for the victims who were killed by Bajrang dal ,RSS. Also people responsible for swami's killing should be brought to the book.
