Chennai, May 17: Under fire from the film industry for his persistent advice to Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan not to act in films depicting smoking and drinking on the silver screen, Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss on Saturday alleged that he was being targeted by liquor and tobacco lobby by unleashing false propaganda.

He told a press meet in Chennai that his stand against liquor and tobacco had earned the wrath of these industrialists and he had been singled out for his stand by them.

Ramadoss said his stand on social justice had made the anti-reservationists to turn against him.

Appearing undaunted over sharp reactions from Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan for his advice, Ramadoss said, "I am not against Shah Rukh Khan or Amitabh Bachchan, who had come out against me for tirade against tobacco and liquor. In fact, they are brand ambassadors for the Health Ministry's programmes. I want to know whether films will not run without smoking and drinking scenes," he said.

Bachchan on May 12 had hit back at Ramadoss for his repeated comments, saying, "all I request the minister is to focus on his own people. By asking Shah Rukh Khan or me to quit smoking or alcohol in our cinema, an attempt is being made to tarnish the image of the film industry. That should not happen," he said in an interview.

Film personalities like Sharmila Tagore too had criticised the minister for his comments.

Defending his campaign, Ramadoss, however, reeled out figures, stating that 14.1 per cent of school going children had become tobacco addicts and that was mainly because they were attracted to smoking due to actors' smoking scenes in the films.

Liquor consumption had also gone up in the country, spoiling the youth. This was also due to drinking scenes in the films, he said.

suggestion on liquor/tobacco by Ramadoss by Anathakumar on 17 May 2008

Whatever Ramadass said is correct. It is the high time that everyone should co-operative with Ramadass. Regarding AIIMS Venugopal's issue -Ramadass should be punished, because unnecessarily he played politics. Here Ramadoss means Anbumani not his father[useless politician]

You are a disgrace to mankind by Shiva Gopalakrishnan on 17 May 2008

You are an utter disgrace to mankind. You have done the worst action of using power to settle personal scores. Now, is that not going to be an example for the youngsters to follow. This is worse than the drinking or smoking adiction problems. Please do not evoke sympathy, No educated person worth his salt with do that.

Mr Ramadoss,Are You so Important? by ashok kumar mehdiratta on 17 May 2008

Mr Minister You are in that chair due to political compulsion. You got that payment degree and your father managed to blackmail Central Govt to get you a cabinet rank.you screwed up AIIMS administration and got a slap from SC.You shouldhave been shown the door by PM but you are there because of coalition compulsion. No body is gunning for you as you are not worth it.On the cotrary you are raising this bogey to get your pound of flesh because election are due and you hahe to collect money for your re-election.Do not worry ,you can rest in peace ,country will not miss you and AIIMS will be grateful to the nation and electorate if you are rejected or taken care of by the system.

Ramadoss is a lowcaste because of his behaviour, not because of his birth by Kumar on 17 May 2008

Ramdoss is the new breed who does not know how to behave as he bought MBBS degree. .Instead of behaving in a responsible manner befitting a minister, he is letting his ego and stubbornness dictate his actions. He is wholly responsible for throwing the smooth working of AIIMS out of gear, thus in turn making the patients suffer. It's time that the UPA gets rid of this controversial minister. The Delhi HC directive to Ramdoss to sign the certificates of AIIMS students within 24 hours has come as a whip of fresh air to the harried students. It is perhaps unheard in the annals of a reputed institution like the AIIMS that the students are made to wait for a long time for want of Minister’s signature. It is naked truth that the Minister and the Director of AIIMS Dr P Venugopal are at loggerheads. Need anybody stress that to keep the wheels of administration run smoothly, good ambience and congenial atmosphere is need of the hour? What is his next move. Surprisingly political parties in TN n

Cabinet Minister is feeling helpless,This is victory of common people by Prakashkapila on 17 May 2008

Health Minister of India is feeling helpless,he who used his powers to push down educated people around him is now feeling the pain of pressure. He has become a weak person that he is ranting his sorrow in media,At least now he must understand that power is a means to help people and not a tool to hit them and revel in the glory,When people come togather governments fall.Socities get recreated. It is a message to all those who use power to hit others and show their supremacy.Your gesture can be returned to you within time.

I am targeted by liquor, tobacco lobby by G Krishnamurthy on 17 May 2008

The Hon Minister for Health has the dubious record of having created legislation to target one single individual, which was mercifully overruled by the Supreme Court. Now, when he is under fire for his abysmal performance as he does nothing except take potshots at film stars, he blames the tobacco and liquor industry. The Minister is the best example of the blatant hypocrisy and meticulous non-performance that has characterized the present UPA government.

Lobbies against Ramdoss by Suresh on 17 May 2008

Mr Menon, don't you know that Venugopal belonged to anti-reservation lobby. The committee headed by UGC chairman S. K. Thorat had found out that the administration of AIIMS headed by director Venugopal played a proactive role in the organisation of the anti-quota agitation, causing thousands of poor patients to suffer. It is Venugopal's fate to come back to AIIMS atleast for few months and implement the OBC quota in AIIMS.

No Anbumani you got it wrong by V.K.Menon on 17 May 2008

Anbumani could you explain which lobby D.Venugopal belongs and why you had to mess with an eminent cardiologist. The trouble lies with you. Your father got you the cabinet post like a dad getting a toy pistol to a son. ou should see how efficient is the young Maran from your own state and try to pick up his good qualities. Do not cry foul when there is none.
