'I confess... please end my trial, deliver your judgment'

Kasab

In a dramatic twist to what was turning out to be a long-drawn terror trial, Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone Lashkar-e-Toiba gunman captured alive during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, surprised the special court trying him by confessing to his crimes today and asking the judge to end the hearings and just punish him.

“Mein apne aap ko nirdosh nahin batata hoon. Meri guzaarish hai ki mujhe turant saza sunai jaye. Mere trial ko khatam kar do sir. Mujhe bilkul confess karna tha. Jo kaha hai, woh kisi ke dabaav mein nahin bola hai. Apni marzi se bayaan de raha hoon. Mere confession ko record kar do (I am not saying I am innocent. I am requesting the court to deliver its judgment immediately. Sir, please conclude my trial with this confession. I am not acting under duress and I am confessing completely willingly. Please record my confession),” Kasab said.

Through the day’s court proceedings, a calm and composed Kasab, 21, clinically narrated his journey from a decorator in a small shop in Pakistan’s Jhelum district to a Lashkar jehadi who ended up becoming the face of the unprecedented attack on the metropolis in which 166 were killed nearly eight months ago.

While much of what Kasab said in court has already been known through the prosecution case, the Lashkar man claimed that an Indian jehadi with the alias Abu Jundal taught him and his accomplices Hindi in one of the many camps they were trained. Besides, Kasab also named Lashkar operations chief Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, and handlers Abu Hamza and Kahfa, along with Abu Jundal, among the four ustaads who trained the attackers.

He said he had waited for Pakistan to accept him as a Pakistani and decided to confess once Islamabad did so. However, there was some discrepancy in that claim as Pakistan first accepted Kasab as its citizen more than five months ago when Interior Ministry chief Rehman Malik said all the 26/11 attackers were Pakistanis. But with Kasab not questioned during the confession, it was not clear why he waited all this while.

Incidentally, Kasab’s confession comes a little over a week after Pakistan gave India a dossier on the action it had taken against the Lashkar men blamed for the attack. The 36-page dossier names Lashkar operations chief Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi as the “mastermind” and reconfirms the Pakistani nationality of Kasab.

While the Mumbai Police and the prosecution claimed his confession as a victory for the watertight case they said they had built, Kasab’s lawyer said he was completely surprised as he did not know this was coming despite having met his Pakistani prisoner on Friday.

Legal experts said that the confession would greatly speed up the trial against Kasab while the trial of the two others accused, Syed Sabahuddin and Fahim Ansari, was likely to be split and tried separately.

The police and the prosecution also said that there were some contradictions and discrepancies in Kasab’s confession today and the one he had made while in custody and later retracted and that they would place them before the court.

If Kasab accepts these contradictions as well and admits to them, his trial would effectively end and the two sides will argue over the punishment he deserves, they said. If not, these discrepancies will have to proved through further depositions.

Monday’s proceedings in the court began at 11 am with Police Inspector M Chavan due to depose in the hearing into the shootout at the Cama Hospital. But around 11.30 am, Kasab looked at his lawyer Abbas Kazmi and said he wanted to speak to Judge M L Tahaliyani, who immediately consented.

“Sir mujhe apna gunaah kabool karna hai (Sir, I want to confess my crime),” Kasab told Tahaliyani. For the next four hours, with a 30 minute break for lunch, Kasab talked about how he went to Rawalpindi with a friend to become a burglar and ended up becoming a jehadi and landed in Mumbai, armed to the teeth to kill indiscriminately.

“Mein Pakistan se sunne ke liye ruka tha. Jab unhone kabool kar liya ke Kasab unka hai, maine confession karne ki thaan li (I waited for Pakistan to accept that I was a Pakistani and once they did, I decided to confess),” Kasab told the court.

Kasab said he met a youth called Muzaffar while working with a decorator called Haji Sultan. “Mein naraaz tha apni life se. Muzaffar aur main baatein karte the. Muzaffar ne kaha hum dacoity karenge Rawalpindi main. Main turant tayaar ho gaya (I was unhappy with life. Muzaffar and I would talk. Muzaffar said we should become burglars in Rawalpindi. I immediately agreed),” he said.

He said he saw some Lashkar jehadis in Rawalpindi’s Raja Market and was immediately drawn to them. “Humne kaha hum yahan jehad karne aaye hain. Hame andar bula diya (I said I was there for jehad. They took me in),” he said, and went on to recall the rigorous training he and others were put through in various Lashkar camps across Pakistan.

Talking about the Mumbai attacks, Kasab said he was merely a foot soldier who had opened fire only inside the CST station. “I was relying on Abu Ismail, my companion, for orders. I had no idea what the next move was. We opened fire at the CST station and then headed towards Cama Hospital. I had not opened fire on any one after the CST firing,” he claimed.

KASAB SHOULD BE HANGED IN PUBLIC IN FRONT OF THE GATEWAY OF INDIA by bobby on 21 Jul 2009

The Indian govt is simply wasting time engaging in constant dialogues with PAK.When he himself has accepted what are we waiting for.Lets not make a mockery of the armed forces. This man should be hanged in public where he killed hundreds of innocent people. This should be a lesson. But our strange judiciary will drag the case till people forget this terrorist.

Guess who is happy or sad about it? Indian Express? NDTV? and the 'Sick'ular champions of India?? Dont be sad, if you felt sad. Not everybody fools in this country. Kassab is going to join the club of VVIPs along with Afzal Guru!

Kasab dont worry, congress there! by praven k on 20 Jul 2009

Kassab dont worry, congress is there to help you, no matter what you confess! If you go to jail, congress will make a VVIP guest house for you in the jail. After all you are their VVIP guest in India!

congress incompetency by kk on 20 Jul 2009

Well all those who voted for Congress in the election should get ready for all the blunders the PM is going to make with the Pakis. He has agreed to talk about Balauchistan and other issues which concerns Pakistan but will not discuss the issues of terrorism operated from Pak. After Mumbai atrocity by Pakis India refuse to talk but all of a sudden PM comes out probably under pressure from US and give Pakis a golden hand shake.

Shame on those parents who gave birth to such a demon like person. by DR.PETROL PUMP CHOR on 20 Jul 2009

Kasab has admitted his crime and he should be brought to justice asap, because this rascal has, like his fellow terrorists shown their cheap mentality by attacking innocent people of our and other countries of the world. Some of Jinnah like Advanis followers are taking this oppertunity to scorn the Congress, but these sanghis too should be brought to justice for committing same kind of crimes in our very own country.al-qaida and sangis have tried their level best to take us all back to stone ages, but they will never succeed, because our people are well educated and they now know all these religion and politics based tricks played by the terrorists or terrorist likes.

Kasab confessed

Country's laws need swift enforcement by RJ Khurana on 20 Jul 2009

Now that Kasab has confessed the trial should conclude soon and the verdict delivered. I say so knowing full well that it is hoping against hope for Indian criminal justice system works at a snail pace and one hears little after the alleged accused have been arrested/brought to trial. Most cases especially the high profile terror cases drag on for decades and one seldom hears how a particular case of terrorism finally ended. This is true in almost 100% of cases of terrorism and also corruption, another deadly crime we suffer from. It is extremely worrisome for not even half a dozen of those terroists were brought to trial have been convicted. Even when some odd accused was sentenced to an exempary punishment, politics came to his aid and the whole process came to naught. Is this the way we plan to fight terrorism?

Kasab holds the key by Dr. Ram Chander Sharma on 20 Jul 2009

What Mr. Kasab confessed, the lone terrorist captured alive in 26/11 Mumbai attack a major international terrorist attack after 9/11 is a well planned tectics to go to the supreme court and relax in Thiar jail like Afzal Guru because Indian Govt is reluctant to take the action on account of vote bank politics as well as appeasement policy to stay in power. He(Kasab) knows his importance and the weakness of Indians.

Afzal Guru and Kasab's turn!! by indian on 20 Jul 2009

Media's job is not just to report but to raise questions and concerns on the proper functioning of judicial and other systems at place for common indian. India's judicial system , is the worst first of all for delivering justice. People of India would like to know why justice has to wait for its turn to be delivered in its final form. Why?? When the guilty has been charged in the court of law, why still our hard-earned money is being wasted in feeding and sheltering the criminals like afzal, kasab in jail? Be it UPA, BJP or any ruling govt. the very basic fact they keep forgetting is that nothing comes before National Interest and it should never be compromised no matter what. All politicians are public servants, it is the public of India which has given them the power and authority they enjoy now.

Cursed Kasab by Hero Vaz on 20 Jul 2009

Kasab should have been hacked to pieces as soon as he was captured. Time and money have been wasted on him.

Kasab"s cofession by shanthanu on 20 Jul 2009

I wonder how is that our media has become so self conscious and just reporting the matter without any comment? Has anybody brainwashed them? Probably Mr.Modi"s name has notfigured anywhere and therefore the media has lost all interest. See how in bold letters they blew up the hooch tragedy In Gujarat which is happening so commonly in almost all States but is down played. If Kasab is bestowed with an award as Valmiki of Ramayan or Anguli Mala of Buddhist lore it is not surprising.

Kasab confessed

kasab by subbarao on 20 Jul 2009

Dear Sir: Mr. Kasab is an invaluable asset. India can use his expertise for any upcoming Indo -_Pakistan war if that happens. Therefore he should get life sentence. Indian people should make use of him to train a millions of bold people like him and send them to Kashmir and Pakistan and dismantle Pakistan and make it part of India as it was even before 321 B.C when alexander invaded India and was defeated. Kasab can also train our police to detroy the criminals of all types: the naxalites, disturbing elements and criminals functioning as politicians, government servents and business people who would do anything for profit in India. When criminals from England came and settled down in America established USA and made that country great because they know how to take care of other criminals. we known CIA recruits sometimes criminals for espionage, to ferment trouble abroad to defeat the enemies. Criminals can be used to get rid of other criminals who are there roaming around in India

40TH ANNIVERSARY OF LANDING ON MOON by RAMESH PATEL on 20 Jul 2009

TODAT IS A BIG DAY FOR HUMANKIND. TODAY IS THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF MAN LANDING ON MOON. SURPRISINGLY NOT EVEN A MENTION OF IT IN THE NEWS PAPER.

Is this the end by Alim on 20 Jul 2009

Buy giving unprecedented coverage to lone brainwashed criminal I hope that we don’t end here. As chanakya stated a 1000 years ago - the conspirators of any crime, are much guiltier than the murderers themselves. Its well known that orphans and teenagers are indoctrinated to perform such acts - we must get those who conspire, who fund and those in power who knowingly let this happen. They still smiling and free. Unfortunately all energies/frustrations are spent on pawns, where as the focus ought to be elsewhere which is tougher to achieve. Unless the conspirators are in Indian Courts justice will not be achieved.

Pathetic Situation Great India. by RN on 20 Jul 2009

The Chiness took quick action to punish the guilty, even US completed the trial and sent Mr. Murdoff to 150yrs in prison. Look at India, people are standing in queue - Afzal Guru, now 29th will be Ajmal Kasab, no further news on Rajus of Satyam. Law makers in the parliament never looked at modifying the law according to the changing era. They are not interested to do so - because they are the people mostly engaged in breaking the laws through the loopholes. When will India a see a new dawn out of all these clutches with equality to every India, irrespective of caste and creed?

Finish the trial and hang him now. by Chandramohan Shinde on 20 Jul 2009

As Kasab has himself accepted to be guilty, end this trial as early as possible. Hang him without wasting anymore time and show the world that terrorism against India will not be tolerated any more.
