The 40-year-old Italian heiress previously linked with rock stars Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger, and who once said monogamy ‘bores’ her, also wanted to make clear that she intended the marriage to be for life.
"I do not know yet what I can do as First Lady, but I do know how I want to do it: seriously," said Bruni in an interview with the weekly magazine L'Express, noting she would put her music career on hold after her album in production is released.
But while ‘respecting the dignity of the office’, Bruni said she wants to ‘keep her personality’.
The couple's romance became public in December, just two months after Sarkozy's divorce from his second wife Cecilia, and they married discreetly on February 2.
Their brief courtship with images of their exotic holidays was seen as alienating conservative voters and those feeling the pinch of rising prices and contributed to Sarkozy's tumbling poll numbers.
While acknowledging criticism by some that the marriage happened too quickly, she said, "those in love have their own rhythm. Ours is up tempo."
Describing it as love at first sight, Bruni said she feels best being with Sarkozy, 53.
