New Delhi, February 5: Tennis star Sania Mirza indicated on Tuesday night that she was unlikely to reconsider her bombshell decision not to participate in the Bangalore Open, but said she would do duty for India whenever selected.

In an e-mail interview, Sania was also critical of a section of the media for lacking restraint and blowing up petty issues related to her.

The 21-year-old tennis ace, Asia's number one and ranked 29th in the world, said she opted not to play the Bangalore Open as she was not in the right frame of mind to do justice to herself or her abilities.

Asked whether she would reconsider the decision following a wave of disappointment across the country, she said, "First and foremost, it would be wrong to say that I have pulled out of the Bangalore Open because in the first place, I did not even enter the draw."

"This is the first time in my career, when I have not entered an international tournament being played in India for genuine personal reasons. I do not think I'm in the right frame of mind right now to do justice to myself or my abilities. If I was to play in this state, I believe I will be letting my fans down," she said.

Sania had cited the controversies dogging her career as the main reason for pulling out of the Bangalore Open and insisted that no sportsperson in India had undergone such turbulence in the last two months.

lets accept and respect her emotions by siva on 06 Feb 2008

its a fair decision lady, how can an individual pay under such scrutiny where things are observed with microscope and reasons blown out of proportion.i would definitly recommend the country/religion to be proud of her for her contribution to the game instead of pulling her down from one point to an other

SELECTIVE APOLOGY by ANANTH SAGAR on 06 Feb 2008

ALL SPORT FANATICS NOTE THE DIFFERENCE IN REACTION TOWARDS TWO RECENT CONTROVERSIES IN WHIC MUCH HYPED SANIA WAS INVOLVED. IN CASE OF MECCA MASJID CONTROVERY SHE WITHOUT A SECOND THOUGHT APOLOGISED BUT IN CASE OF SHOWING DISRESPECT TO NATIONAL FLAG SHE IS ADAMANT, NOT APOLOGIZING BUT THREATENING INSTEAD... SO ITS BETTER SHE HANG UP HER BOOTS....NO PLAYER IS ABOVE THE GAME AND NO INDIVIDUAL IS ABOVE THE NATION

Money - the criteria by Sridhar Pichumani on 06 Feb 2008

Crores of people support her everyday and only few hundreds cause troubles. And she gives more weightage to the latter to pull out of the tournament. Dont you see the motive? It is MONEY. Abroad tours are lucrative and the local ones pay a figure that is not motivating.

She is trying by P on 06 Feb 2008

I donot think comments would have been a problem.. It becomes a problem when you have to face religious and legal persecution. It is not how many are there supporting her.. It is how she is going to deal with this kind of persecution where she is targeted by her religious leaders and the judiciary who even accepted the case of insulting the flag (no fault of hers).

The decision is yours... the reactin is ours! by Hemant on 06 Feb 2008

Sania... you make us proud. I admit that we don't have a lot of talented tennis players in India. That does not give you the right to hold the tennis fans at ransom. I am truly disappointed by your attitude. All you had to do was play and do your best. Now you have created more people who have a bad opinion of you. I agree that you probably don't need to care about their view. The sad part is that WE made you. You are young now, but as you grow older and you look back on this phase of your life you will realize that you have just made a blunder. Your adviser (you know who) couldn't even keep his own tennis partner happy. He had "personal" problems with him. This same individual is now guiding and shaping your decisions.Having a mentor is awesome but being beholden to anybody is the wrong strategy. Good luck to you in the future. You have just lost a fan.

Ridiculous by P on 06 Feb 2008

you made her??? now that is awesome a statement... what happened to her grit.. her determination.. her hardwork... She is playing for her country and you as her fans are cheering her on and felling proud of her hard work.. but that is all.. Please do not try and take her credit away....

Sania - confused and misguided! by Jolly on 06 Feb 2008

Very well said. I wish I could write this well. Thanx.

How does it matter?? by Dileep on 06 Feb 2008

Who cares? She is not a respected or feared player in the world circuit. She is the best India could produce and that is not saying much in any sport, especially in Tennis! Indians have elevated her to ridiculous levels and now feeling the effects of their stupidity! Wake up and Grow up India, concentrate on your great young scientists and entrepreneurs! Let us not waste time on trivial matters!

It matters by Hemant on 06 Feb 2008

Come on Dileep... her decision has upset several people. That does not diminish her talent. She has contributed to Indian sports in her own unique way. You can choose not to be a fan but you don't have to diss her.

It perhaps matters! by Dileep on 06 Feb 2008

Dear Hemant: I respect your feelings and views; thanx for another perspective. Your letter is nicely worded. I accept what you say.

Oye couch potato.... by Amit on 06 Feb 2008

Dileep... its nice.. right, sitting on our couch and passing those comments? if u can show even 10% of the grace Sania (at the age of 20) has shown all this while.. u would be my next hero. I am also guessing ur the one who writes from France.. right? I am not surprised at ur comments.. I think her decision is completely justified.. I mean look at what ppl are giving her. If push comes to shove, I won;t mind her playing for other country where she will not have to face all that! It be nice to at least watch her play!

A SELFISH, LAZY BRAT- SANIA MIRZA by VIPIN SAHGAL on 06 Feb 2008

Thank you Sania. It is easy to make others responsible for your own mistakes. To play a competitive sport you have to sacrifice a lot and work very hard. You are just a talented lazy sports person who was wrongly idiolized by your fans who happen to be your country's population. All the millions of rupees you got by way of endorsements was only because Indians adored you and made you worth lot more than what you are or ever will be.You are what in my language is called "UNDHON MEIN KANEE RANI.Sei Gesund.

Decision unprofessional and un-called for by Manoj Sterex on 05 Feb 2008

This is probably is most unprofessional approach any sportsperson could have taken towards her career. All these controversies are a part and parcel of the package called fame. It has to be taken in one's stride and be handled professionally. Does that mean incidents like these can bring her passion for the game down? Is this the way to answer her critics? As long as you give heed to what other's say, you'll always be pulled down in life. Once you are mature enough to take up your own decisions, just believe in yourself and do what you have to. That is the way of life and that is best way to shut the people's traps! I hope someone talks sense into her before she ends up losing interest in the game or playing for the country completely.

No pampering to sportspersons by P.P. TALWAR on 05 Feb 2008

Sania Mirza has become a much pampered lot with all round progress in tennis and the fabulous wealth earned by her, by means of the lucrative ads and the prize money. To decide not to play in home counry is her own outlook. By her absence from tennis tournaments in India, no damage will be caused to the game.

Sania-Good riddance! by Jolly on 05 Feb 2008

I totally agree. Indians pamper ordinary folks and treat them like super stars. Indians deserve this snub. They must learn to support right sports-persons not one-day cricketers and fly-by-night 'champions'. She needs the Indian money but not criticism. If she is too big for India, we should care less.

Agreed! by Manoj Sterex on 05 Feb 2008

Agreed! In fact, more younger people who deserve to play will get a chance to showcase their talents. In a way, we have to thank Sania.
