Sydney, March 2: Sachin Tendulkar, who defied pain to score his first one-day century in Australia in his 18-year career, rated his effort ‘highly’ but said he did not want to prove anyone wrong.

Tendulkar remained unconquered after scoring 117 which helped India to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three finals, setting platform for their first-ever one-day cricket tri-series win Down Under.

"In the last series, I missed a few centuries. I was also struggling with a groin strain for some time. But these things are part and parcel of the game and one has to carry on. I rate this hundred very highly," Tendulkar said after guiding India to a six wicket victory.

Tendulkar's less than stellar one-day record while chasing in recent times had set some tongues wagging but the batsman said he was not aiming to prove anyone wrong.

"I play the game for passion and love. People have been writing all sorts of things and I don't want to prove anybody wrong," he insisted.

Tendulkar also said he was happy about his long stay in the middle today as planned.

"It was wonderful to end on a winning note and be there when victory was achieved. The century was secondary. The next match (in Brisbane on Tuesday) is very important now," said the master batsman, who may be playing his last ODI series in Australia.

The 34-year-old cricketer agreed that he wanted to get his first one-day hundred in Australia but felt victory in the first final made it a secondary objective.

"I wanted to get the hundred today. We had never beaten Australia in Sydney, and there was no better occasion than today to change that," Tendulkar said.

Time to retire gracefully. by Anand Babu on 03 Mar 2008

Well done Tondulkar, this is the time for you to retire gracefully. For gods sake do not use this opportunity to hang on to the team and sleep eternally. You still can make more money outside the team.

Oh Sour tongued Manjrekar ! Where art thou ? by eddie on 03 Mar 2008

Manjrekar - thy name is mud ! How King Sachin has spoken ! With his bat as always. Manjrekar and his like should be cast in the dustbin of cricket for revealing the abundance of his jealous and envious heart. True to nature Sachin has graciously stated that he did not want to prove anyone wrong. Sachin does not need to. He will always be rated far above any other cricketer. At least for the next 3 years, no one should be allowed to question whether Sachin is to remain in the team. We at least owe him that. Our poor ozzie friends are clueless as to what hit them. Some reports in the ozzie media point out to another conspiracy brewing to nail bhaji for another racial outburst at the crowd in scg. They will continue to behave like little sissies. Shadow boxing by Bhaji and Yuvi were a treat to watch. Subtle messages on the field and not so subtle ones like thrashing Ponting and Co should be the aim of our boys in blue. Now surely Ponting has no place to hide and I predict that calls for his head to roll will gain momentum. Once again we hail Sachin the King !

sachin's performance by aniket on 02 Mar 2008

it took a tendulkar to beat aussies even 10 years back in sharjah. i was also disappointed of his big match poor run. but only sachin bats like himself. the lack of effort for shotmaking, the clever shots and the way he command match situation. he is great. why dont you support him when he is having bad time rather than just putting scale higher and higher. sachin gets 40, its a low score. but its alright for any other.

accept with grace by cricketlover on 03 Mar 2008

why are you people getting annoyed when i bring out the truth.presently sharma, gambir, dhoni are far better than tendu. accept with grace.

i fully agree with cricketlover.sachi was greatfew years back.not now because of his poor eye sight

cricketlover - accept with grace by cricketlover - accept with grace on 03 Mar 2008

Sharma, gambir, dhoni are talented players but are still green behind their ears. They have a long way to prove that they are better than Sachin. He has proven himself for over a decade. They have to show consistent play over long period.
