Chandigarh, March 7: Kashmir Singh, who was freed from Pakistani jail after 35 years, on Friday admitted that he was an Indian spy and did his best to serve the country, but deplored that successive governments at the Centre did nothing for his family.

"After my arrest in 1974, the successive governments did nothing for my family. I did the duty assigned to me as a spy...but the government after my arrest did not bother to spend a single penny for my family," a calm and composed looking Singh, who was accompanied by his wife Paramjeet Kaur, told reporters in Chandigarh.

Sixtyseven-year-old Singh thanked God for being kind to him and said the various governments at the Centre did nothing for any of the prisoners languishing in various jails in Pakistan.

"The Central government did not bother to take care of my family following my arrest. The government does only the paper work," he said.

Asked whether he was sent to Pakistan by the Military Intelligence and the route he took to go there, Singh said "even Pakistan authorities failed to get this information from me".

"I was paid Rs 400 as salary...as per duty, I went to serve the country," he said.

Asked what he would like to say for some other people who are working in similar kind of professions, Singh said "I was a spy and did my duty...about others I will not comment...I am not President of the country to give reply to such queries".

Singh, who was lodged in seven different jails in Pakistan, said "I will not tell the story of my ordeal in Pakistani prisons as it will damage the cases of about 100 other such prisoners languishing in jails there".

"Only I can say that I am a firm believer of God and even offered namaz and kept roza (fast) in the Pakistani jails," he said.

When asked how she managed to sustain her family, Kaur said "I worked as maid".

"After my husband's arrest, the Central government gave no compensation to the family and left me in lurch," she said.

He said in Pakistani prisons he was known by the name of 'Ibrahim'.

"I was kept in solitary confinement and remained chained for 17 long years," he said.

Earlier, Singh alongwith his wife met Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in Chandigarh.

Badal announced that the state government would give a monthly pension of Rs 5,000 each to Singh and his wife as "he is a special national hero".

The Chief Minister also said the government would construct a house for the family at Mahilpur in Hoshiarpur district.

"The land measuring one canal for the construction of my house has been donated by the Chief Minister's media advisor Harcharan Singh Bains," Kashmir Singh said.

Badal also decided to give a government job to Shishpal Singh, the physically handicapped son of Kashmir Singh.

About the changes which he noticed after his return, Singh said his village Nangal Choran has completely been changed.

"If I was not guided by anyone to my village, it would have been difficult for me to locate my house," he said adding "I did not even recognise my children".

Meanwhile, human rights activist Ranjan Lakhanpal said that he had already moved the court seeking adequate compensation from the Centre for Kashmir Singh.

Lakhanpal claimed there were about 36 more such prisoners in various Pakistani jails for whom he had already moved the court seeking some relief from the government for their families.

kashamirsingh by sanatanpandya on 09 Mar 2008

I thought kashmir singh was a punjabi hindu or a sikh gentleman. It would be interesting to know when and how he became a muslim while he was in a pakistani jail and if his adopting new faith had anything to do with his new found freedom.. It is not clear whether his family in india has followed Kashmir singh's change of faith. They continue to use original names as does Kashmirsingh. It is not my business to question the faith of an individual but I would like to know whether name has any bearing on one's faith.

We all are Culprits in Neglecting our national Heros by mac on 09 Mar 2008

All Indians are corrupt and culprits who can be hanged for eternity. Its a crime to forget someone who has gone to serve the country. Arey we forget doing good to our Army offiers, who are in front of us what to tell about those who left the country to serve as spies. The govt is first culprit, the second is the Political Parties, the third is the mdia and the last but not the least is the Indian Populace including the corporates. The IAS who manage the show are the Cream of the culprits as they dont do any good to this nation and dont let the motivated people to do it by drafting lesser pay for them. They along with the governments (read FM)dont even care to ay sufficient for the Heros but always have reasons not to pay them. Pity on all the indians. We truely have become spineless and thankless

Compromising the situation for others in Pakisthani prisons by Prakash on 08 Mar 2008

By publicly acknowledging that he was a spy, Kashmira Singh compromised the situation for Sabarjith and others who are languishing in Pakisthani prisons. It is really unfortunate.

wise decession form government by ahsan on 08 Mar 2008

indian government is wiser den the foolish public if the government would have said he was a spy he would not have got lifer from the pakistani government. he would have killed or perished inside the jail. by the way kashmira sing did a big mistake by telling he is was a spy he made the lifes of many prisners in pakistan under question mark and in future govt of pakistan woul d never treat all prisnors as good they will really assume all r spies even many fishermen may be not spies. and the govt of punjab is politically using the fame they think of politics instead of nation and other prisnors who are still in pakistani prison. if in reality the govt of punjab had any love for nation they would hav helped kashmira and never made it news. we know indian bad politicians who r curse to nation.

Ethical Governance by SKannath on 08 Mar 2008

Pakistan was humane to Kashmir Singh though a spy. In todays world every thing could be used for spying. In an Orwellian system everything is monitored and is doctored for an ideology. In such a situation every one should reason whether they are doing right or wrong as they could be doing some one's dirty work. Make one's life ethical and do not compromise ask and reason why you are doing something for others. Say no to every compromising and unethical act no matter who ask to do. Do not end being unofficial representatives for morons, corrupt, men slayers, religious bigots, paranoiac beliefs or any one as no one is to believed on face value. World is better place without all these and all the problems in the world is because of them

Kashmir Singh by Alka on 08 Mar 2008

We are happy as Indians that Kashmir singh has come back from Pakistan. We request our Govt.to work hard for the release of Sarabjeet singh and others like him languashing in Pakistani jails for no fault of theirs.

WITH OUR HEART FULL OF EMOTIONS AND OUR EYES FULL OF TEARS, WE SALUTE YOU IN AWE, KASHMIR SINGH by SUBHASH SAMPAT on 08 Mar 2008

With our hearts full of emotions and our eyes full of tears, we salute you, Kashmir Singh and your devoted wife Paramjeet Kaur, in absolute Awe and Reverence. May God give you a very long life so that your family and you can spend many happy years together to enable you all to recoup all that you have lost for 35 long years. May every proud young girl and woman of India wish for a brother, husband, father like you and may every proud young boy and man of India wish for a sister, wife, bhabhi and mother like Paramjeet Kaur. And may Mother India give births to many many proud sons, brothers, husbands like you. Our emotions in our hearts and tears in our eyes are making it difficult, almost impossible for us to find suitable words, suitable language in which to express our heartfelt gratitude and immense pride at what you have done so that millions of your fellow countrymen, women and children can remain safe and secure in their homes. This message is a tribute to honour the sacrifices of the gallant Indian Jawans who in all the wars that India has fought to the last man and the last round on the icy desolate peaks of the Himalayas with obsolete bolt-action Lee-Enfield rifles against the assault rifles, heavy machine guns, mortars and artillery of the enemies. Hope the whole nation will stand up and rise to demand that our present government do its utmost to free all others still in Pakistani jails.

Kashmir singh by Rajendran on 08 Mar 2008

Really this is an unbelievable story or may be fact! The authorities have to reply for the his claim. If he was employed as a paid spy, there will be record for the same with govt. The public have to know what the reality is! The Indian people is very thankful to Pakistani authorities for his return and especially the human rights activists in the country as well. Also, the authorities have to investigate any other intention by the Pakistani authorities by this belated release, socially, internationally affairs or as a part of some hidden agenda…Thanking you, Rajendran

Kashmir singh by Kartar singh on 08 Mar 2008

Kashmir singh has done his job,but has changed his faith to just get mercy of pakistani officials. He should be converted back to sikhism before giving him any benefit as he was a sikh at the time of his official duty ,so he says.Secondly he should not be praising pakistan for toturing him for so many years and forcing him to change his relegion. He seems to be out of his head.I praise Badal for helping him and denounce central government for ignoring many.As a son of retired army officer i know the plight after retirement. Our government does not do enough for encouraging people to join army, only adds are not good emough.the benefits after retirements are to be re worked etc.Kashmir singh change relegion and become indian by soul.

Shame Shame Kashmire Singh you are not patriot because if you were patriot you can talk about good relationship with both countries .Ansar barney not helped you ( kashamire singh ) instead he helped Humanity..

Kasmir singh by Mohan on 08 Mar 2008

There are many politicians, not fit to be sitting in the parliament talking about patriotism, true patriots like Kashmir sing unnoticed in our democracy. Our media gives importance to cine stars, cricket players and to the dirty politicians. After the release of Kashmir sing, the media should play important role in publishing articles about those who still suffering from Pakistan jails like Kashmir sing.35 years of life is gone for Kashmir Singh, why he can’t be treated as Nelson Mandela or even Gandhi or Nehru?Government must compensate him with a hefty amount, he is should honored with highest honors in India. He can’t be, because he is poor.

Great honour merits a man to whom the enemy showed mercy only after proving itself as a full blooded devil's servant just short of the devil itself. by Spy on 08 Mar 2008

A man proud to serve his country, despite having met such a gross injustice, has full right to speak truth. Being a spy and serve one's nation is not a shame. The spies for Pakistan serving in India should be met with similar injustice or ordeal, so that their families and country men speak for them. India government should immediately and expressly release all spies or suspected ones who are languishing in our jails for the last 14 years or longer, as they have already served more than a life sentence. If we have none, then it would be a fitting argument to show to the world about 'great' nation of Pakistan, which is already famous for 'peace' and 'nonviolence'.

Kashmir Singh's release by John Abraham on 08 Mar 2008

All Indians have to be proud of Mr Kashmiri Sing as he is a great citizen of India. However, this incident shows our goverment's lack of vision and caring for it's citizens. After assigning duty, our government should have taken care of his family and the efforts should have made to rescue him from the Pak jail. It is ridiculous. Just think if Mr Sing was a U.S citizen... how they would have taken care of his family. This should be an eye opener for our government authorities in future. When we look back to the history of India we find that we Indians were always opportunists in everything we do... that is why Britishers ruled India for many centuries. Can we learn the lesson from this and change our out look?

..... This was the high time for the family of Kashmir Singh, the name we have hardly heard before , but there are thousand stories lying beneath the calm carpet. Here is the One. Kashmir Singh. The unsong Hero of the nation who sacrificed the thirty five years of his life in the jail. Nation should respect the perons with such a passion for the country....

God save the other Indian prisoners suffering in Pak by Gopinathan on 08 Mar 2008

It may be true that Kashmir Singh was a spy. Our government should have taken care of his family and it is a gross injustice that it had not done so. But that won't justify Kashmir's statement in public that he was a spy. This would endanger the lives of other Indian prisoners languishing in Pak jails. Henceforth no one would get a chance to walk out of the prisons. Atleast Kashmir has walked free now. But think of the others who have lost their chances of becoming free because of Kashmir's statement. By endangering the lives of others, Kashmir has only lost his moral right to point his fingers at others.

I was a spy.... by Dr.Shanthakumar on 08 Mar 2008

Tue that he has undergone lot of misery during his jail term at Pakistan! May also be true he would have been a spy ! But then, he should not have said about this in the press and public speeches. I do not think, there is no proof he can produce that he was a spy. Assuming that he was spy by the then governmnet, then he could have approached the right authority in the government to help him for the future. Exposing spy concept like this for himself or to the government is not correct. However, we feel sorry for his sufferings and the government has to come out to help and his family .

Kashmir Singh And Govt of India by Babuchandra on 08 Mar 2008

It is heartening to know the long years Kashmir Singh has spend in Pak jail. His hope and courage kept him live all through these difficult periods. But what the Government of India has done? Our government and MP’s in parliament have only time to fight each other and get special benefits for themselves. Who care about the nation and the people like Kashmir Singh who devote their life for the country. I feel ashamed of the Indian Government, the MP’s and the political parties. The government should take immediate steps to put a plan to help the jawans who sacrifice their lives for the country and those who are missing in action. Also government should take all possible steps to exchange prisoners and bring back those who are languishing in Pak jails.

Kashmir Singh by Rajeev on 08 Mar 2008

Some bloggers are saying that he shouldn't have said that he was a spy..but i dont see any wrong in him divulging the secret. if burney was not knowing this, then he is a fool. As a spy also, 35 years is too much.. Pakistan should start looking at its judicial system. He should be treated as a hero as he endured so much for India.

We read a different version of what he said at the press club in Chandigarh. you write: "Only I can say that I am a firm believer of God and even offered namaz and kept roza (fast) in the Pakistani jails," he said. In the Tribuneindia from chandigarh we read he said, " he did this in line of duty meaning he became a muslim and learned the quorn and stuff. What you are writing is defferent. Don't understand the motive, either you are alarming the authorities to make sure they keep a check on him, or you want to defame him? please check other news papers before publishing some thing of this nature.
