Washington, March 7: Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton has promised to end the US' "one dimensional" Pakistan policy focusing on President Pervez Musharraf and push for improved relations between India and Pakistan if voted to power.

"For the past seven years the Bush administration has pursued a one-dimensional policy toward Pakistan, focusing its high level attention overwhelmingly on President Musharraf to the exclusion of other important political actors in Pakistan and its civil society. It is time for this to change," Clinton, who is locked in a close race with rival Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination, said.

Stressing that the Feb 18 Pakistan elections should send a signal to the United States about its policy toward the Islamic country, she has that a future Clinton administration will ensure that military aid to Islamabad is "accountable" and will appoint a Special Envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan.

"(We will be) promoting a stable relationship between India and Pakistan which will further contribute to Afghanistan's long-term stability," she said in a statement.

The recent Pakistan elections are a key step towards the return of democracy for Pakistan and the establishment of a civilian-led government, the former first lady said.

The Clinton campaign said that the assistance to Pakistan should be targeted at strengthening democratic institutions, building civil society, and improving economic and educational opportunities.

"A stable and democratic Pakistan will be a stronger security partner for the United States in the years ahead," it said in a statement.

Political morality---- by romesh.sharma on 07 Mar 2008

With respect and wishing her success in the coming elections I would rather ask Mrs Hillary Clinton for not to interfere in Indi-pak conflicts/relations.Let the world solve their problems within and keep aside till you(the US)is not requested. The whole world doesn't welcome American meddling which has negative impacts and escalates the conflicts. This kind of mediation is purely based on selfish interest which is no more secret.I would rather ask her,if she is elected as Prez,to draw back or reduce US forces from every corner of the world operating under different names e.g. geo-political advatages,humanitarian/human rights organisations, charity and aid groups and so on.I am sure Israel-Palestine conflict was long resolved if US and west had kept out.Be sure India doesn't need your or anybody from out-side world to solve its problem.what you do or which policy you adapt to work with Pakistan won't be much different than the current one and the previous one.It was basically anti-India so please better don't mention India while speaking of US-Pak relations.

Hillary on Pkistan by T Koki on 07 Mar 2008

thus spoke the lady though mindful of hefty NRI influnece in the US of A and growing Pak dissent from the unifocal US policy in the region. hope the sanity will prevail in the new Administration not only for Indo-Pak but other foreign policy faux pas as well.

Kudos to Hillary by rajamani on 07 Mar 2008

I like Hillary's stand vis-a-vis Pak policy. My unstinted support to her, and best wishes to her to succeed in her efforts
