Rajapaksa has said he would not take even a "single cent" from Prabhakharan's parents who are in a welfare camp in the Wanni, amidst earlier reports about his challenger Sarath Fonseka stating he was not averse to accepting their support.
"I won't accept from Prabhakaran’s parents even millions or billions while I would gladly take a donation of even a cent from our toiling peasants," Rajapaksa said accepting a donation of Rs 300,000 from a peasant farmer from Anuradhapura in North Central Sri Lanka.
Rajapaksa said he would borrow money from any bank in the world in order to develop the country but he would never take "five cents" from Prabhakaran's mother and father.
"I would rather take money from a poor farmer than betray the country," he told a large gathering of people while addressing his first public rally since handing in his nominations for the January 26 presidential poll.
In his maiden press conference late last month, Fonseka had said he was ready to secure even the support Prabhakaran's parents.
He said there were neither permanent friends nor permanent enemies and he would receive the support of all parties to defeat the government.

What an abysmal level of debate! We cannot get mired by these "War Heroes" Vote First Preference, for a man who doesn't have blood on his hands. Second preference ditto. THIRD preference: most Sri Lankans seem unenthusiastic about the "War Heroes". But each seems to think one of them such a black demon that the other must be voted for. Well, give him THIRD preference. THINK that one out. It will make no difference to the outcome. No difference, unless one of the other candidates is actually elected. Looks unlikely, but if that happens, we will be able to sail the ship of state on an even keel. In other word, to save the country, just keep asking everyone "How many Preferences can we exercise?" If counting goes to a third round, the winner will be a humbler, more approachable man. The key to these elections: - PREFERENCES. "Manaapa" in Sinhalese. We internet users must influence the non-English using majority!
