India has also been pursuing closer relations with the United States, something that worries China. China has a standing army almost three times the size of Pakistan's, according to official figures and defence industry estimates, but it is the lack of knowledge about China's military that concerned Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major.
"We know very little about the actual capabilities of China, their combat edge or how professional their military is," Major told the Hindustan Times newspaper. "They are certainly a greater threat." India and Pakistan have fought three wars since independence in 1947 and tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours rose sharply after last November's Mumbai attack, which killed 166 people. A slow-moving peace process was paused after the attack. Islamabad has acknowledged that the attack was launched from and partly planned in Pakistan, but rejected New Delhi's accusations that the gunmen had support from official Pakistani agencies.
Although India and China have signed a treaty to maintain "peace and tranquility" along their disputed frontier and agreed to find a political solution to the row, talks have hardly made progress even as their business ties boom. India blames the lack of progress on China's claim over Arunachal Pradesh, in particular over its Buddhist enclave of Tawang. New Delhi says it cannot part with populated areas to settle the border dispute.
Major said the Indian air force was upgrading about five airbases, of which two would operate Russian Su-30 MKI fighters.

I have seen videos of the development of China, It builds new High rise structures and removes farmers land, It's not a democracy land and in India some improvement is going on, but not like only doing good for richer people but also the other side.In China it is true that richer are getting rich, poor are getting poorest. The difference in the two Class is greater than even India.
According to me this china attack would be for showing his superiority in asia ,india should try it's best and take revenge of 1962
You try searching on ‘China’ on youtube or google, and you will be amazed and shocked to see its development. See the growth and development in China. In true sense of the words your eyes will get wide open. You will feel backward as an Indian when you will start comparing the two countries and will feel sad about the prevailing conditions in India. China's achievement is really commendable and Indian policy makers should learn from China. What India wants to achieve today that China has already achieved in so less time. India and China can be partners in growth and development, and this century can be truly asia's century. Just try watching some videos on China on youtube or just go through the pictures of Beijing capital city, see the marvelous infrastructure they have got today. Its no less than another America in making, just next to India. China truly has a potential and will of becoming a superpower, no doubt. India and China should develop engagement models to move forward.
you are very right. the only thing straight about the C is the hair.
The Indian bureaucrats must read the biographies of great American military heroes, who worked closely with their Soviet counterparts under the notorious Stalin and understand military diplomacy. The newspaper which elicited such a response must be censured and this man reprimanded. Actually he should relinquish his position. It is important to know (1) that it is a mischievous question, the source of which is not a friend of the Indian people (2) why did the Chief of IAF not realize that such a response served no purpose, except advertise his own lack of diplomatic and managerial competence? Why the Indian, legislators, administrative, academic and defense bureaucrats do not take friendship and peaceful coexistence with the people of China as a priority rather than lamenting in public, of its lack of preparedness, comparing its economic parity, talk about China as enemy number one, and various such nonsense!
Pakistan has inducted it own Khalids while the India's Army decided to junk Arjun for Russian T90 which by the way was rejected by the russian Army.Ditto with the LCA -- the airframe for Sukoi was developed in the 70's when the best computers were not half as powerful as the computer you are reading this on wonder why we can not design one as good today. Now the Russian who are 'refurbishing' a 20 yr old junk Aircraft carrier are demanding the price of a new one.It is time we take indigenous production seriously otherwise we would soon be unworthy to compare ourself with Pakistan. We are not an IT power we are the equivalent of a sweat shop or garbage man when it comes to IT we only do most of the cleaning up or support work.
It is in the nature of politician , more so in congress who will never implement a proper stategy unless it done not give them vote bank....countries security comes third after the cut they receive for defence equipment......Mumbai police are yet to get bulletproof jackets.
China is flexing its muscle around the world be it in oil, food, aid, supporting rebel groups and have the resource to support it - a permanent member of UN. Even when the long march failed in 1959 and when they were going through a phase of harvest failures in 1963 to 1965, they did test the nuclear weapon. By 1970 US realised that they had to talk to them. By 1974, the founding member of UN, Taiwan was asked to vacate the seat in favour of People's Republic of China. Where India failed is the decision on 1954, when Homi Bhabha was ready, to test the weapon. Good or bad allow history to judge. But when I look at all things, we Indians are not doing too badly of course. We are a force to reckon with in IT, now Bolywood is becoming a craze worldwide, our educators occupy principal positions in Universities and we seem to be all around. Sooner or later we will have a NRI in the White House. Should we consider China as a threat?
China's design on India is glaringly seen from the fact that it has over these many years, for more than three decades to be precise, been using Pakistan as its 'cat's paw' to not only intimidate India, but to also deflect the world public opinion from its hegemonistic ambitions to dominate the world. As a matter of fact the most successful gambit of China in its quest for world dominion is the manner in which it has successfully been using Pakistan, besides checkmating India, as a conduit for acquiring American technology to modernise its armament industry particularly in the production of military air crafts which China and Pakistan are co-producing. Besides being weary of this, India should also do away with the dogmatic foreign policy it was following all these yearsr. India's foreign policy should be made to be resilient for meeting its interests.
I am in complete agreement with the IAF chief that China is the immediate threat to India than Pakistan. Pakistan is a lackey of China and doing her bidding in unleashing terrorism in India. Indian governments of all political persuasions, over the years, have been cowered to Chinese military expansion-intended World domination. Instead of being mute and reticent on Chinese intend, Indian government should give a demarche to China that her proxy war-terrorism in India-by her lackey Pakistan will have serious consequences. Rather than pussy footing around appeasing China in the border dispute parleys, India should demand the return of the Indian occupied territories in Chinese possession after the 1962 war. This cowardice attitude on the part of the Indian government has resulted in China becoming more belligerent-demanding to give Arunachal Pradesh. Beware of China! To this end, India should engage with other countries’ –including USA, Japan and Australia-military in having regular exercises to send an ostensible missive to China that her military misadventure in the future will have dire consequences.
Pakistani military preparedness could not be as effective and belligerent as it is without active Chinese help. Chinese offensive positioning is a serious threat to India. Before WWII, China was under brutal Japanese occupation and suppression by a consortium, controlled by US, Briton, France and Japan. They still have anti Chinese military alliances. Russians are not their close friends. We have more things in common with them than we have with any other people and have coexisted for thousands of years with identical conditions and problems, but have we ever tried to understand them? How would this loud public lamentation help? Why don’t we adapt the US-Canadian model in our relations with China?
For the Air Force chief to have said that China is a greater threat openly, is not very diplomatic. He should get the Air Force to be battle=ready and leave such statements to the Politicians... We are in collaboration with China on various fronts...Let us just be wary and prepared.. and not shoot our mouths. Ven Sardi
China is going to be a really big threat for India. There are multiple reasons for it, first India has always been very weak in opposing politically the behavior of Chinese. Recently Chinese started sending there submarines through the underwater tunnel they have built as captured by the US satellite. These submarines have started patrolling in the regions around Andaman Nicobar Islands. Of late the US Naval Commander reported one of the Chinese saying that leave Indian Ocean to Chinese and manage Pacific. This is a clear Indication that China wants to swallow some nations around it, and Indian Government not saying loudly as given them more reasons to do it. Let us not repeat the mistake of Jawaharlal Nehru, we lost so many people then let history not repeat itself. Lets avoid things from China too to save ourselves from China's effort of dominating India and then capturing sizeable land of ours. I hope people will see the sense in it.
Well, while I write this I know for sure that the chinese keep track of all the news and views being expressed on these public forums.Yes, they read all the daily epapers from India. This threat should have been long realized, China has left no stone unturned to destabilize India. It has surrounded it by being friends with all its neighboring countries. Also trying to create tension within through maoists clashes. That is their strategy to cripple nation by forcing them to utilize their resources which could have been used into infrastructure projects etc. Side -by-side they see a great market here. So, the point is China's is playing a double-game with us. Tying us with internal and external conflicts to keep our resources tied to them and not grow economically and simultaneously do business with us for their own economic growth.
IAF chief also should take account of the combined military strength of the alliance of Bangladesh-China-Pakistan
If some one writes these kinds of comments in China he will never see the next sunrise, if it is in Pakistan either Paki army or taliban will silence them by decree(death).this is the difference between India and our neibours.I hopeour leaders will wake up and and do some thing to help the jawans who die for the country.
It is a historical fact that International borders are only formed by war and not historical claims, and only language China understands is strength. India should have stronger military than China. Therefore Pakistan is out of question and China settles borders with India. Talks will go on forever but India can only speak with China from a position of strength
with all the ill intent pakistan has for us and shere jealousy it knows it will never ever in its wildest dream can win a military confrontation with our brave soilders, that is a precise reason it is banking on people with cammando training given by ISI and backless pakistani army,to people like Kasab.pakistan wants to exploit INDIAS internal security which is very weak. and they have people like DAWOOD we havent been able to capture uptill now.with both china and pakistan it is the army which owns the country, but in india our BRAVE and most disciplined soilders have to go to court to get their entilements,it is a shame on our democracy and beurocratic apathy towards those who selflessly die for us.these people and their family should be given what they deserve, which is repect, love. MR Anthany you are the luckiest man in the country to represent the bravest and most disciplined organization in the world, who are fully capable of looking after us from both this countries.
How come when George Fernandez of NDA had said the same thing, all hell broke loose? How come Congies are silent now?
IN todays world, both pakistan and china knows very well it is humanly very very difficult to wage a war on country like india with 1.1 billion people, largest democracy in the world, with more then 3 million expatriates in United states alone who love the country immensely.this is the precise reason why we are having a continous occult hidden war as we discuss this issue.it is a strategic war which is continous for the last 60 years with pakistan and thrice it has become evident, and once with china, but 2009 is entirely different game, india is a very different country now.pakistan has tried its level best to exploit our internal security situation to harm us and will live no stone unturned in the future.india should give as much importance,to internal security as we give to protect our international borders.defence and home ministry should act like twins brother and share all available intellegence daily, beurocratic apathy should be removed.people like DAWOOD who are tools of ISI panish
RE: CHINA poses bigger threat to INDIA, says IAF Chief, The ground realities are that CHINA-Pak combine have been posing bigger threat to INDIA incl. States of J
I hope that he is not muslim with soft heart for Taliban. It is not a brainer that China is a big and most unsecure country and even if poses a threat to India- it is totally understandable. Government there kills every other day Chinese people to kill any opposition in bud. But Pakistan is a stupid and backless country. I hope Pakistan will die its own death but the next target of Taliban is obviously India with 150 million Muslims with some well wishers too. And Pakistan has nothing to slove the agenda (cheap brainy labor and fertile land) of Taliban, run on oil money to solve the problems of lazy, cruel and pedophiles shaikhs.
China is obviously much bigger military threat than Pakistan. But India faces more imminent threat to its stability and security from the religious fanatics of Islam and Hinduism. Chinese may be a bigger power but they are not mentally retarded like talibans and RRS(Really Stupid Sanghis). If India can overcome the religious fanatism and the caste based divisions of its society, I think no outside power is big enough to be a threat to its security.
It is imperative that the indian army maintain a qualitative edge over china in high mountain warfare. We should improve intelligence ties with vietnam, taiwan and japan, who assess china's capabilities better. Since it posses a greater to them.
The Air Force Chief has pointed out the facts correctly. Shri. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and his policies shall be blamed for our defeat in the 1962 war with China. Mr. Nehru had rejected the ideas of modernisation of armed forces after independance. The national and social security should be on the priorities. The total upgradation of armed forces and police is necessary. Whatever be the budget but shall be sanctioned with futuristic plan for next 25 years. Probable threats, neighbours, geography, social conditins etc. shall be considered. The government and its machinary should learn to work rather than talking useless. The clear policies shall be drawn on the basis of above mentioned plan. Aggresion is the best tool than defending. But basic foundation shall be prepared without making any noise. The policies shall be politely and bluntly discussed and declared on the national and international forum and enemies shall be punished without hesitation. There is a need of will power.
