A 5-0 or 4-1 win for Johan Botha-led side would see the South Africans climb to top spot while a similar result for Ricky Ponting's team would see them stretch their lead over their nearest rivals.
A 3-2 series win in favour of Australia will be enough for South Africa to inch above India into second. India, though, would get their chance to improve rankings when they take on Sri Lanka and New Zealand in the one-day series.
India would play five ODIs against Sri Lanka and another five during their tour to New Zealand. Daniel Vettori's side too has the chance to improve from their current fifth place if they win the series against India.
Defeat for Pakistan in the forthcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka could see them slip behind New Zealand to fifth.
