Chandigarh, March 1: BCCI was trying to create a monopoly in the sports but the Indian Cricket League ‘will fight them even if it means waging a long battle’, former captain Kapil Dev said.

"They (BCCI) are trying to create monopoly by trying to have everything under their control while we are trying to break their control," Kapil, ICL's Executive Board Chairman, said.

He said it was beyond anybody's comprehension why BCCI was seeing ICL as a rebel venture ‘while our aim is to promote cricket at grassroot level and give chances to many of those youngsters to play side-by-side international cricketers, which otherwise they cannot dream of’.

"Don't we have freedom to promote our cricketers, who are equally talented, but do not find a place in the national team. Who is going to benefit, we ask, the sportspersons or just the ICL alone. Does our Government not encourage private players in a particular field so that people get better service and the competition improves," he said.

Kapil said BCCI should stop wielding its stick by trying to ‘pressurise’ others boards/bodies to debar the ICL signatories from their events.

"It's unfortunate that such things are happening. But we will fight them, even if it means a longer battle than the one our country fought to win Independence," Kapil said when told that England and Wales Cricket Board had reportedly decided to bar players appearing in the ICL from taking on contracts as overseas players in county cricket.

Money where from by Wilson Mathew on 03 Mar 2008

When most of the Indians are still poor and reeting from poverty where is all this money coming from. If they had money can't you spend it on the poor's upliftment. So many crores of indians and no goood athletes or facilities. IPL is a disgrace. Thank you ICL for taking on one of the Goliaths.

ICL by Wilson Mathew on 03 Mar 2008

Thank you Kapil Dev for standing upto the goliath. Where was this BCCi when even first class players playinf first class cricket in India used to struggle to make ends meet. ICL has changed it. Bravo ICL

Kapil and ICL by Janavi Sundaresan on 03 Mar 2008

Well said Kapil. All the best to you. IPL and BCCI are a disgrace to this game. Their goal is only money at any cost. When the whole world is talking democracy and private enterprize why is BCCI acting like a big dictator and why are they tolerated?

Keep It up Kapil by Kapil Fan on 03 Mar 2008

Kapil has always been My hero, he did the unexpected...BCCI cannot go on like this forever. Imagine if the Indian Goverment takes over cricket. With present FM in power it will soon happen.I hope it does or its best BCCI drops its monopoly status. Kapil keep it up .....

Rubbish Kapil by Nisar on 02 Mar 2008

How much pension ICL will give to the players once they stop playing, ( board is paying minimum of Rs 10,000 to each player after there retirement every month till they live), don't ever forget the same board got you where you are today and off course your hard work. And remember, they supported you even when you were unfair with other players. It is good to encourage talented players from rural areas and provide them with playing facilities and help them financially with education and sport.

Kapils Comments by Nisar on 02 Mar 2008

Kapil himself was unfair to one player by not selecting him when he was the Indian captain for Relieance World Cup in 1987 even thought the players performance in Ranji Trophy and Deodhar Trophy was excellent and he was the only natural left hander in the World Cup Probables. He had Shivaramakrishnan( TN) in the India Team with a broken thumb when Doctor advice him not to hold the ball for 15 days.If Kapil was truely playing for the Country why did he select a player who cannot play for next 15 days and the world cup would be over by then.Kapil is not a fair person. He needs to think before he talk of others.

It happens in India by Kapil Fan on 03 Mar 2008

I remember Sachin Tendulkar touring with the team inspite being injured when Ganguly was the captian. Ganguly called him a tourist but we all thought he was there there for his reputation. This happens in India ....unfit and out of form players make the team coz of Godfathers.

Go get them KD by MG on 02 Mar 2008

How dare a body get so much power that it can control lives and livelyhood of so many players.

Wake up by Nisar on 02 Mar 2008

You are right, they are powerful because they worked there way up. For your kind info, they are helping all the retired players with Pension every month and advicing all other Cricket Associations to help more players get involved in game. They are doing some thing for the game. What will ICL will do for the players once they are out of the game.

Kapil da jawab nahi by sidd on 02 Mar 2008

Kapil!!! you have always been a fighter. You brought cricketing glory to India. You are the only genuine cricketer "dil se" who always played for India. So!! no doubt you are right and IPL is wrong. I believe you would fight and I also believe you would win....as you did before. I am with you.

Keep going KAPIL by Dilip/Hyderabad on 01 Mar 2008

Ya BCCI should be grateful to ICl becuse without them BCCI would nevr would have thought of IPL and the BIllions it has earned from that venture. Also ICL should protect the foreign cricketers who are facing harrasment from their respective boards for turning out for ICL .It is restrctive practise and ICL should do something about it.ICL shoull also be recognised. What is BCCI afraid of
