The common entrance exam, planned as a SAT-type test, is likely to be held online from 2014, and could be given twice a year, highly placed sources said. The paper test is likely to stay on until the online system stabilizes.
The NIT council has approved the new format. All the IITs have agreed too, and are likely to give their formal approval at a meeting of the Joint Admission Board (JAB) on February 18. The human resource development (HRD) ministry has formed a committee of IIT directors and CBSE officials to work out the modalities before the meeting.
The ministry has been working on a common entrance format for over a year, with the aim of reducing the stress of taking multiple tests for students just out of Class 12, checking the coaching business which promotes learning by rote, and reinforcing the importance of school education.
HRD Minister Kapil Sibal plans to take the proposal to the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) to help build acceptability and consensus for the common entrance test among state governments.
“The common entrance exam will have two elements — simple aptitude testing to assess scholastic levels, and an advanced section which a student can choose to either continue with or skip,” said a source.
“This test will essentially produce only scorecards for each student, and the concerned institute will then decide how it will use the 60 per cent weight — say, an IIT can rely more on scores achieved on the advanced level section than on aptitude. It could be a 30-30 aptitude-advanced knowledge format for IITs, and 40-20 for NITs,” the source said.
“While AIEEE and JEE will go, the JAB and the Central Counselling Board (CCB) will stay to work on these finer points and modalities of admission.”
The JEE currently decides admissions to the 15 IITs; the AIEEE to the 30 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), 4 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and 5 Indian Institutes of Science Education & Research (IISERs). A host of private engineering and technical institutes in the states also use AIEEE scores. Over 10 lakh students apply for AIEEE and 5 lakh for JEE every year.
the ida of having an aptitude test is perfect, but having the boards marks for weightage has its own pros n cons.... the percentage ratio shud b reduced a bit, and we can have the best brains as does the u.p.s.c. exams and the c.a.t. exams.... all in all, its a great effort and the only possible solution in the direction of curbing the random businesses growingg in the name of iit...
It is quite painful to see the change in the IIT-JEE fortmat.By this format,students of State Boards can get maximum marks due to 40% weightage (can score upto 100% by mugging up) and CBSE students have to struggle with the board marks.
this new pattern is Absolutely senseless.i think there is no role of aptitude test in jee.i urge the entire IIT committee to check out the free non sensless decisions taken by mr.kapil sibal.firstly he graded 10class result and now he is playing with prestigious IIT
it is really a great decision.by this decision more importance is given to school education.the stress on the students acccording to me will be reduced and they can concentrate more on board exam.
You cannot change rules of the game after the match has already started . For students appearing for IIT JEE , the match has already begun. Pl follow the basic rules .

mr.sibble please think about the droppers too.you have already destroyed our class 10th board.this way how you will make Indians compete in the global world
Sir, if the pattern is getting to be changed then everyone would get a fair chance.So keeping droppers in mind, droppers must be allowed to give CBSE EXAMS 2013........
First initiate steps to improve the level of teaching / guidance at college level and then think of stopping the flow to coaching classes. Till that time IITs shall be allowed to conduct the examination as it is
Mr. Sibbal just keep IIT away from your experiments.... you should not to thrust your own thoughts in education system... rather than you ought to take advice from the renowned Educationists....
sir, please don't change the iit pattern for 2013 as it is not possible for us to prepare for it in 1 year.. the droppers would be getting disadvantage too as they cannot score again in 12th class...
sir,there is different criteria in different boards.plz change this pattern and don't give any weightage to board...
i am not able to understand whats the reason for this change. what is the need of general knowledge and current affairs for an IITn....
This is a nice education reform. It will certainly check the trend of coaching institutes.Being a class 10 student from a small city I felt students of big cities had unfair advantage as even though they may be less deserving they got admissions in IITs through absurd learning methods of coaching institutes.Now there is at least a level playing ground.
sir we all students from bansal request u to not enforce all the changes in iit pattern from 2013 as we all in 12th standard it is not possible for us 2 prepare all things in 1 year . so please pay aatention

sir it is my humble request to u to not change the pattern fr iit jee 2013 because there is huge disimilaririty btween different boards. state brd student obtaned gud marks by cheating and are u try to ahead poor studnts in iit institude
Is is really a wise decesion of honorable Ministre Mr Kapil sibbal to apply new rule with immediate effect. All talented student will get justice. The talented students are not getting opportunity in our country and they are going outside. This decession will certainly make our country corruption free. I request Mr kapil Sibbal to modernise our education system and make it useful for talented student. A talented student never afraid of any type of competition. If one has study thoroughly and concept is clear he need not to worry.Every student must study school syllabus and then go for higher education. Taking short cut method is neither good for students and nor good for our country. The new rule will certainely help and will give justice to all talented students
changes are in favour of overall development of a student. It will be good for all type of students. once a student study his subject thoroughly will get justice. so changes should be applied as early as possible to give justice to a talented student.
Please don't try experiment in IIT-JEE which creates the national technical talents. Don't mixed 12th standard exam & IIT-JEE; generally, students, who are aspired to become technocrat from premier institute, do not give thrust to Board Exam rather prepare for IIT-JEE and thus they want just to get pass marks in 12th standard. If this new thought process implemented then that will put poor student in huge burden and subsequently in mental pressure; which I believe contradicts the Minister's own thinking. Request to Mr Minister to re-think about this thought process and take advice from renowned educationist .
Dear Sir, it is my kindly request to you that please don`t change iit pattern in 2013 because it is not in the favour of those students who are now appearing in 12th class
