Mumbai With the state Governments playing tough on sparing forces for security, the Indian Premier League was on Sunday shifted to another country amid speculation that England or South Africa would be the venue for the second edition of the high-profile event.

The decision to shift the Twenty20 tournament out of the country was taken at the BCCI's emergency Working Committee meeting here to take a final call on the cash-rich event which had run into rough weather because of security apprehensions.

"Because of the attitude of the Government that they are not ready to spare security forces for the cricket tournament... we are forced to take the decision to move the event out of India," BCCI President Shashank Manohar told a press conference.

"So the Board has decided to take the tournament out of the country. We are in discussion with other Boards who are willing to host the event. I apologise to the people of India for moving the tournament out," Manohar said.

We are missing Indira by sidarth on 23 Mar 2009

If there is any Government in India then they should dissolve the mighty BCCI and put its official in jail on the charge of not selecting player who is representing ICL. This is shame on Indian Democracy that an Born Indian cann't play for their own country.Current Indian players should boycott the IPL,If they sill play then it will be considered as they are playing on for money in their entire international career. BJP should not criticize Government as he is right in their stand for IPL. As BJP is supporting Anti-National Lalit Modi, then confilmly he will lose confidence of Young India.

Why not host the games in one region only in India say South India where security is lot more easier to guarentee and the state governments will be willing to provide that by S.Balakrishnan on 23 Mar 2009

What happenned to the talk that India is a safe country to play cricket? It is unfortunate that various state governments are unwilling to comeout with security guarentee. But we can stage in a few states say Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Kerala, Karnataka etc. and may miss out the North Indian states. India is so vast that the South Indian peninsula itself can host all the matches without problem. To move outside India and Indian Premier League is preposterous. I am sure the south indian cities are safe and can guarentee the safety of the cricketers and the match. This will give a much needed exposure in cities such as Coimbatore, Madurai, Mysore, Salem, Trichi, Cochin, Trivandrum, Guntur, etc where people will be looking forward to watching international cricket in their local stadium. As a matter of fact it would be nice if the IPL is shifted every year from exclusinvely one region to another and hosting the matches in smaller cities all across that region.

IPL shifted out of India by Prem Parkash on 22 Mar 2009

Why BCCI could not consider holding the IPL after the General elections. In that situation, if weather does not permit holding day matches, the same can be held as day-night matches

Shame on IPL by Sachin on 22 Mar 2009

Whatever the reasons behind the government not guaranteeing security, IPL/BCCI have shown poor judgment and worse loyalty to the country they represent. Given the hostilities in India's neighborhood, conducting peaceful, free

IPL back stabbing by RAM on 22 Mar 2009

Shard pawar -NCP and Lalit Modi -Marwari and Shukla the congresee have stabbed the country worse than what Brutus did to Ceaser.Let the scoundrel franchisee not dictate terms of IPL.BCCI should be stripped of the right to represent India as they have become too big for their boots. They are ignoring the wishes of majority of the fans. 62 years back -Two persons sold the country to British and cut our hands and now the Mafia Italian is pulling the strings and stabbing the nation in its heart and again selling our pride to the the English drunkards.I pray God let these 5th columnist who are hiding amongst our midst be punished by the people of India.

Wrong message by BCCI by Madan on 22 Mar 2009

It is disappointing to see the words like "because of attitude of government .." coming from BCCI president. Sounds like he is not ready accept the fact that govt will really not be in position to provide security to so many foreign and Indian players. And no need to say sorry to people of India. Continue your money game outside India .. common man in India does not have any problem ...

BCCI and IPL by omar on 22 Mar 2009

What is IPL? Indian Premier league with all famous forgeign players. If BCCI really want to promote cricket let them help poor indian cricket players.BCCI cash richness paves way for the rich to become more richer.BCCI should be called as a advertiser not a cricket board.Does any other cricket board of any country is holding such tournaments?Only BCCI, why just for money and not only that they provide glamour also with so many brothals (cinema stars) in the field promoting cricket. If this is the case may be IPL will arrange a huge venue shift next year to the moon for any infavorable reasons in india.BCCI wants to pocket money and promoting cricket comes at the end of their agenda.Continue BCCI your marvelous work for cricket.

Wah Modi Wah by Viondh on 22 Mar 2009

So the Government had the last laugh on it ..ha ha! by the way this entire episode has thrown how bad we can organise an event. BCCI while talking of Crores of rupees involved..they did not even bother to consider the election scheduled this part of the year in the Country. While they have shown everyone clear that they are bothered about money and dont bother about National pride etal. Mr.Modi is coming out to be a perfect politician breed in this entire issue..we have seen him saying..no quesiton of changing dates, then he changed dates, then we have seen him changing dates and venues...he again said that no question of moving it to another country..now there he goes...seems to be fit to contest in poll..well not so late..!!!! Shame on such administrators..who are keen to show up in every media and yap but do not take responsibility!!! I only wish all the promoters and advertisers now should back out, wud like to see whether our HM can pull the plug on relay of this citing poll!!

IPL Matches Shifting Venue by K.A. THOMAS on 22 Mar 2009

This shows the hunger for power our politicians are running helter skelter. All our security personnel

security issues always there by rahul on 22 Mar 2009

Is the indian Govt giving any garuntees about security about common people during elections times or are they also supposed to move to any other country during elections.

ALL THE POLITICIANS ARE TRAITORS by M Arun on 22 Mar 2009

Both the general elections to the National Parliament and the Indian Premier League Cricket are equally national event. If the security forces of the country cannot manage to provide the necessary securities for these two simultaneous events can the country survive a full-scale invasion by the enemies from all directions? The action of the government and the political leaders shows that they are incompetent to govern the country and have committed treachery.

BCCI DISGRACED INDIA by DA on 22 Mar 2009

The ploy by the Western world to frighten India and take away the matches from India is successful. All our money launderers business men's plan is a hit. Indians help loot India. When IPL officials knew the elections were during April-May, why did they arrange for the tournament during this time. It should have been during diwali or so. This is delibrate attempt to ensure that all funds of India are stashed away and now they will say the Income is earned abroad. Loot mar is prevalent every where in India. Western powers want to stall the Economic Development of India, hence they encourage the pakis terrorists. It is a national shame that the Indian games are held in England. Tomorrow - under any pretext, venues will be shifted. BCCI had made a India a banana republic. Shame on them. National honour is disgraced by the corrupt business men / politicians who are sponsoring and organising IPL.

Remarks on Shifting of IPL matches from India by Jaisankar on 22 Mar 2009

This shifting of IPL matches will surely set in the minds of sportspersonnel outside the country that Our country is not safe. BCCI and Home Ministry should re-consider and deal very carefully on tournament.

IPL tobe shifted by Suhas Shah on 22 Mar 2009

that is a good news. less problems for security forces as now they can concentrate on elections. sure it is not a empty threat as to organise this big event in short time requires lots of planning and admin capacity. as it is al the events here do not get any tax revenue as all the states have given tax free status. i am sure minimum tickets sale as they may not get responce like India. i am confident they will regret the dicision.

FANTASTIC!!! by ramesh on 22 Mar 2009

FANTASTIC NEWS!!! SHIFT WHOLE GAME OF CRICKET OUT OF INDIA.PEOPLE SIT IN FRONT OF TV GIVING UP WORK BRINGING ECONOMY FOR THAT DAY, TO A STANDSTILL. CRICKET IS ONE OF THE FACTOR RESPONSIBLE FOR COUNTRYS BACKWARDNESS.

Money before country by Raj on 22 Mar 2009

There are elections. There is a security threat. One can really understand the governments predicament over providing security to 2 huge events. Obviously elections cannot and should not wait. But IPL is more interested in making money out of the league than wait till democracy is practiced. They are more than happy to abandon India for the sake of money. Will IPL take responsibility of there is a terror strike during this time when security forces are stretched to their limits?

Unwise decision by Babu on 22 Mar 2009

The most unwise decision by BCCI.They may pay a heavy price for their decision. Why can't they postpone the games until the elections are over.

IPL shifted out of India by Murali on 22 Mar 2009

Mr. Manohar, why is the BCCI blaming the government? Every Indian knew that the general elections were round the corner. In fact, yoour ex-President, Mr. Sharad Pawar who's an MP himself would have definitely known it. But did you factor that and the the Mumbai terror attack in your calculations? No. We can't have security incidents during our elections and you know that damn well. It's the BCCI's fault, not the government.

IPL shifted out - what about rest of us? by oldindian on 22 Mar 2009

IPL lucky, since they have resources they can fly out of country and do what they like. Poor commoners of mumbai affected by 11/26 - all they could do was to hold candles in their hand! Horrible - thanks Mr Chidambaram for confirming what we have always suspected - under UPA india is no better than pakistan. Good show!
