Lucknow, December 9 Vijendra Sharma, an IPS officer of 1994 batch, was sent back to his parent cadre UP in the middle of the 10-day National Police Induction Training Course from Sardar Vallabh Patel National Police Academy (NPA) on charges of misconduct. Sharma, originally a Provincial Police Service (PPS) officer, was later inducted into the IPS cadre.

When contacted, IG (personnel) Praveen Singh said the DGP office has sought detailed information about the charges of misconduct levelled against the officer. A letter has been sent to the authorities concerned at the academy in this regard, Singh said. He, however, refused to disclose further information in the matter.

Sources said the DGP’s office might serve a show-cause notice to Sharma, asking him to place his plea.

Meanwhile, Sharma, who is posted as commandant of the PAC’s 15th Bn, Agra, refused to disclose the reason behind his sudden return from the academy in the middle of the course.

“I won’t comment on the matter,” he said. Sources said the officer had “violated” established norms of the academy and had taken his servant there. “This can be one of the reasons,” the source added. He said the academy provides an orderly to all IPS officers, who undergo training at the NPA.

Sources in the DGP office said the Induction Training Course is necessary for those who are inducted into the IPS cadre from the PPS. Vijendra was inducted into the IPS cadre but is yet to complete the course.

“Without attending the course, an officer who is inducted into the IPS cadre from the PPS, will face problems when it comes to further promotions,” a source in the DGP office said. According to the source, the academy organises the training course for such officers twice a year.

UP still has 37 such IPS officers, who have so far not completed the training course. “The DGP office has written to the NPA, requesting it to increase the quota of IPS officers for the course. This year the DGP office was asked to send only three officers,” the source disclosed.

The number of such IPS officers in the state may increase after the UPSC clears a proposal for the induction of 16 more PPS officers into the IPS cadre, against the vacancies of 2005 and 2006.

“The induction of 16 officers into the IPS cadre is in process. A panel of such officers was sent to the UPSC against the available vacancies,” the source added.
