Kolkata, February 19 The Kolkata police have arrested Sayeed Ahmed alias Mohammed Desai, an agent of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) who had escaped from the custody of Pune police on January 24, police said on Tuesday. He was arrested from the Karaya market by the Anti-Rowdy Section of the Detective Department on February 16.

Javed Shameem, Deputy Commissioner of the Detective Department of Kolkata police, said Desai has been booked under various sections of the Foreigners Act and has been remanded in judicial custody till February 24.

“He is a Pakistani national and has no valid papers. We are looking into his antecedents,” said Shameem.

Desai was planning to sneak into Bangladesh from where he could have returned to Pakistan. The police traced Desai after he made repeated calls on the cellphones of former Army man Shailesh Jadhav, who was arrested by the Pune police on February 15 for his alleged links with the ISI. The police had seized three mobile phones and some classified documents carrying sensitive information about the Army establishments from Jadhav.

Unaware of Jadhav’s arrest, Desai was scheduled to meet him in Kolkata. “We had informed the Kolkata police about Desai’s presence in the city after tracing him through his call records,” said Inspector Bhanupratap Barge of the Crime Branch. Officers said Jadhav had received Rs 50,000 from Desai in three instalments. Police have also recovered an e-mail in which Jadhav has allegedly told an ISI official that he can provide them with some sensitive information. Jadhav, who worked as clerk in the armour corps, was court-martialled in 2002 in Jodhpur in a misappropriation case. Sentenced to a two-year term, Jadhav spent a year at the Yerwada Central Prison, where he met Desai.

After fleeing from jail, Desai stayed at Jadhav’s residence in Satara for a few days. He then went to Belgaum (Karnataka) on a truck, and then arrived in Kolkata via Hyderabad. Police have also detained two truck drivers who had taken him to Belgaum.

A team of Pune police will soon visit Kolkata.

kill the terrorists as the existing laws cannot deal with muslim terrorists by krishna on 20 Feb 2008

We should simply kill these terrorists when they are caught. To prevent their escape their hands and legs should be cut as per the islamic law sharia. The christian leaders in UK is of the opinion that other societies should apply Sharia to muslims. The reason for such a statement is that the Sharia was required to control the subhumans of Arabia. Because of muslim terrorism it is a terrifying experience to travel in train, bus or plane in India. One cannot even go to a temple peacefully as these terrorist muslims reach everywhere in India and is haveing a freerun under Manmohan Singh who is even giving pension to the terrorists families.

Strong measures needed to tackle terrorism by Jitu on 20 Feb 2008

Both these ISI agents (Desai and Jadhav) should be awarded the death penalty (and not imprisonment). This will send a strong message to every potential traitor about the consequences of their action aimed at destabilising and destroying the country. These traitors have to be made aware that they will be provided with no clemency if even one of heir deliberate actions threatens the security of the nation in the slightest way. This is the only way to curb terrorism.
