ISO-certified institutes, free bus rides for civic school kids

Mumbai, February 4 With a total provision of Rs 1,360.62 crore, the civic body's budget estimates for 2008-09 for its Education Department include a series of new initiatives:

* In order to smoothen the working of the department, new posts have been created in the cadre of officers- two posts of Joint Education officer, four posts of Deputy Education Officer, three posts of superintendents, three posts of administrative officer and 44 posts of beat officers.

* The work of maintenance, cleanliness, supervision, housekeeping, etc of municipal schools is proposed to be entrusted to private contractors/ outside agencies for which a provision of Rs 2.93 crore for primary schools and Rs 1.88 crore for secondary schools has been proposed. This is with a view to secure ISO certification for schools.

* The BMC also plans to start 118 day schools and 12 night schools, the sanctions of which are awaited form the state government.

* Looking at the increasing popularity of English-medium schools, the corporation had earlier decided to start 84 new schools imparting education in English, of which 32 were started in the academic year 2007-08. Plans to launch the remaining English-medium schools are now afoot.

* For students residing in distant places like Manori, Aarey Colony, Turbhe and RC Church, the BMC has proposed to pay them bus fare for a minimum distance. A provision of Rs 0.14 crore has been proposed towards this.

* The BMC also plans to provide full-fledged computer labs to municipal schools, for which a provision of Rs 5.25 crore has been proposed.

* A public participation cell established in the office of the Education Officer will soon have a Child Rights Cell, with the intention of spreading awareness on fundamental rights and to pay attention to redressal of their problems. A provision of Rs 0.10 crore has been proposed.

* An expenditure of Rs 24.47 crore has been proposed for the work of general civil repairs, electrical installation, repairs to electric instruments, furniture, etc. The work of giving school buildings a facelift as well as structural and other repairs has been carried out in 150 school buildings so far. In 2008-2009, the work of major repairs and mechanical, electrical works will be taken up in 179 school buildings.

An additional Rs 227.67 crore has been proposed for the construction of additional classrooms, repairs to toilets, arrangements for safe drinking water, reconstruction of old buildings etc.
