Mumbai, January 17 Income-Tax (I-T) officers today conducted raids at the residences and clinics of four doctors, who are cosmetologists, after “the department found that these medical professionals were evading taxes”, according to I-T sources.

“Over 100 I-T officers are conducting the search and seizure since morning,” confirmed a senior I-T officer. “One of those raided is a surgeon from Ghatkopar. The rest are doctors in the same field,” he added.

The doctors are alleged to have shown their fees lesser in the account books than what they usually charge their clients. In most cases, the nature of their work as cosmetologists had clients willing to pay high fees.

Two other individuals whose houses and workplaces are also being raided includes a “professional whose business of human trafficking earned him income”, the senior official said.

The house and office of a “bookie”, with a history of “betting and taking bets while cricket matches are in progress is also being raided”, the officer said.

Last year, around the same time, the department had conducted searches on several doctors in the city. While the initial estimates were not arrived at by the department after the search was over, the impact was later seen during the filing of returns, according to officials.

The search will continue for some time till logical conclusions are arrived at over the source of income and assets.
