Kolkata, June 10 The automobile engineering students of the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) blocked the Gariahat road for nearly half an hour on Tuesday. They were protesting against the college authorities that their two-year course was not completed even in 3 years and they have not yet received their passing certificates of the National Council of Vocational Training (NCVT). “Without the NCVT certificate, we can not apply for jobs,” said a student.

The course was introduced in West Bengal in 2005. It includes 1 year of basic training and 6 months of advanced module, where the students are required to undertake training in various companies. The college had promised to send students for training in various companies including TATA, Mahindra, Bajaj and Maruti, but it never happened.

The students complained that practical classes were not conducted as the college lab was in a pathetic condition with age-old apparatuses. The students alleged that new equipment are available in the college but were not given to them.

Vehicles reserved for the course related purposes, were used by the college authorities for their personal requirements, the students said.

They also complained about the absence of driving training facilities, which was an important component of the course. The placement cell provides placement to all the departments, except the automobile department said Satyabrata Das, a third year student.

Deputy Director Siddhartha Bose refused to comment on the issue.

According to Hari Prasanna De, director of the institute, the Government of India had not yet decided on the NCVT certificate for these students.

Therefore, the students have been awarded with a substitute certificate, which would serve their employment purpose, De added.

All the 79 students had cleared this year’s Madhayamik with third division. “We have been studying in this school since class five. Now the authorities are denying us admission,” said Gopa Ray, one of the protestors. Prasanta Nath, secretary of the school committee, said: ”We have just 272 seats.
