New Delhi, January 24: Amid unprecedented political lobbying for the Bharat Ratna, former Test Captain Ajit Wadekar said Sachin Tendulkar should in fact be given the country’s highest civilian honour after he belted his 39 Test century on Thursday.

“If anyone has to be given Bharat Ratna it is Sachin Tendulkar since it is he who deserves it the most,” said Wadekar who joined former cricketers in showering encomiums on the 35-year-old batting maestro shortly after he fired another ton in the fourth Test against Australia in Adelaide.

The suggestion came with just a day left for the announcement of the National Awards. However, no one has been awarded Bharat Ratna for the last five years. Political parties have been lobbying since the past one month for the Ratna to be awarded to their leaders and the names proposed included Atal Behari Vajpayee, Kanshi Ram, M Karunanidhi and Karpoori Thakur.

Wadekar’s suggestions came four days after visiting British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said in New Delhi that he would recommend Tendulkar for knighhtood for his accomplishments on the cricket field.

“I would like to see some of the great players of the modern era--like Sachin Tendulkar--proposed for honorary awards so that the British nation can salute their achievements,” Brown said. If that happens, the little master could be the first Indian sports Knight.

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar, who made his international Test debut against Pakistan in Karachi in 1989 at a tender age of 16 is no stranger to awards and is a recipient of several honours.

Tendulkar is a recipient of Arjuna Award given for accomplished sportsmen(1994) and Padma Shri in 1999. He was given the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, the country’s highest sporting honour, in 1998. He was also chosen as the Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1997 while Time magazine named him in November 2006 as one of the Asian heroes.

What Sachin did to the nation? by Bharat on 24 Jan 2008

What Sachin did to the nation? He played for his own name and fame and earned millions of dollars and became a rich man and enjoying luvish life. Distribute it to every Bharatiya, as everybody doing something. Am I less qualified than Sachin? If you want to talk true Bharat ratnas, then talk names like Mata Amritanandamayi, Swami Ramdev, Sri Sri Ravi Sankar. These three great persons of Bharat Mata did real contributions to Bharat, her people and the mankind. They are ratnas, real ratnas. Their work and contribution goes all across the world. Their social services for the people and poor Bharatiya are unparrallel in todays world.

Stop this rat race for Bharat Ratna by P.P. TALWAR on 24 Jan 2008

With the unthoughtful recommendations, only meeting selfish ends having come to fore for the grant of Bharat Ratna to every Tom, Dick and Harry, it is tentamount to making mockery of the prestigious highest Indian award that is Bhara Ratna. Undoubtedly, Sachin Tandulkar's achievements in the field of cricket, making the countrfy proud are unquestioned. But having already been awarded numerous coveted titles, earning him name, fame and fabulous wealth, the award of Bharat Ratna should not be considered for him. While a mess has already been created by the politicians in liberally recommending their party candidtes in competition, the best would be not to award Bharat Ratna now to anyone.

Give it to my dog, he is better quilified by sai kumar on 24 Jan 2008

My dog is the best contender for the fraud BR award. This award carries no values, after giving it to people like mass-murderer Indira Khan, fake Gandhi and her son Rajiv Khan, fake Gandhi. I am sure, anti-hindu christian Antonia Maino alias Sonia Maino-led Congress will make it her family and relative awards. This years fraud BR award goes to criminal Sajnay Dutt, terrorist Afzal Guru and Sohrabuddin, Italian figitive Quaotrochi, and christian missioanries who beat the 80 year old Hindu Swami in Orrisa.

Time to wind up the bazaar of awards by vijay on 24 Jan 2008

I feel the time has come to stop the custom of giving any awards (by governments/corporations in particular)for meritorious service to the country in any field. From local mohalla to the national level, what we see is that the first few awards are given to people with established names ( whom none can challenge). This eventually is aimed at building the image of the awarding agency ( pratishthans of politicians!) rather than the awardees. Subsequently later the awards are given to people who want themselves ( mostly politicians and their psychofants) to be established at par with the real heros.Unfortunately, very old persons with outstanding achievements also cannot avoid the temptation of accepting more awards and indirectly help the evergrowing bazaar of awards.Isn't it time for the socialists to introspect? Can they? Will they?

Bharath Rathna by ram on 24 Jan 2008

This is a greatest joke. what he has done for the upliftment of India/Indians. Khel Rathna is OK but not Bharath Rathna.Great people like E V R Periayar did some social revolution and worked for the upliftment of downtrodden. The Ambanis, The Tatas, Birlas have done so much to generate employment and millions are working in this groups and they are getting fed.
