Agartala, May 15: If controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen is not allowed to return to Kolkata, she would like to stay in Tripura where Bengali is widely spoken when she returns to India before the expiry of her Swedish visa in August.

"I write in Bengali and so I want to stay in a Bengali inhabited place," she said in a telephone interview from Sweden with Ajker Fariad, a leading Bengali daily in Agartala.

"Kolkata is my dream city. I will write to (West Bengal) Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya to allow me to stay in Kolkata and if I am not allowed to stay there I would like to stay in Tripura where most people speak Bengali," she said, in the interview published on Thursday, adding she would also write to the central government.

"Staying in Delhi is impossible so I have to look for a place where people speak Bengali," said Taslima who was hounded out of Kolkata in November in 2007 following violence and was compelled to stay at a safehouse in Delhi before leaving India on March 19.

She said, "I have no doubt that Bengali people love my writing because I write about human rights, women's right and hope that fundamentalists also have understood their mistakes and would not cause any harm if I stay in Kolkata."

Stating that her Swedish resident visa would expire in August and she would return to Delhi before its expiry, Taslima said she was feeling lonely in Sweden and was suffering from depression as she could not write a word in the past few months.

Enough is enough by Uttiya Basu on 16 May 2008

Taslima is a non issue and it creates more problems for us to have her in India. Every few months, in order to bring herself to the limelight, she creates an issue like this. Every such issue is because of what she writes / speaks to the media. She is a writer and needs publicity and thats what we give her. Islam needs internal reform amongst the clerics, who look at a very narrow view of Islam and propound it. people like Taslima use it for her own benifit and people in India suffer because of her irresponsible comments

India should grant citizenship to Taslima immidiately by Jay on 15 May 2008

Anti-India/Indian agents do not ask for permission to stay. Those who perpetrate bomb blasts in Jaipur or Mumbai did not ask for visa. Many among them are Indians. Being born in India also does not mean much. We have huge population who will love to migrate to any developed country or Mid-East if given a chance and will do all sorts of nasty things against India to live in that country, if needed. It’s the DUTY of govt to uphold the basic human rights, safety of any citizen and guest. We should grant permanent residence to any person who is capable to bringing honor for the country and make our country a better one. India should grant citizenship to Taslima without much delay.

We need more people like Taslima to make India a better country by Jay on 15 May 2008

Indian and West Bengal Govt must ensure Taslima’s safe return and safe living anywhere in India. Shameless vote bank politics and decade old minority appeasement (mainly appeasement of fanatic mullahs and their blind supporters) must stop. Scholars, creative artists, law abiding person like Taslima is more than welcome in my country. India is a secular country and it must remain that way. I will be happy if people like Mulayam, Amar, Arjun, Laloo etc are forced out of the country and we get more people like Taslima, Salman Rushdie etc.

India is no orphanage by P.P. TALWAR on 15 May 2008

Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen who is hounded out of her own country by the Muslim clerics for her adverse writings causing religious uproar by the Muslim fanatics in Bangladesh, she is now seeking permission to stay in India, Bangla speaking Tripura state. India being no orphanage, the fundamentalists active in Kolkata would not want her to stay in Begali speaking Kolkata or Tripura. Taslima Nasreen should understand this.

TRIPURA IS NOT A MUSLIM BENGALI STATE by S.Rameswaran on 15 May 2008

EXPELL ALL THE BENGALI MUSLIMS FROM THE COUNTRY.

expel all other nationals who overstay by raj on 15 May 2008

India must ask politely all foreign nationals who are overstaying their just time, be it Dalai Lama or Tasleema Nasreen. These people are doing more harm to India by carving out their own kingdoms in India and later their supporters conducting illegal anti India activities. It is not in the interest of India to spend enormous amount in extending security to them when India is finding impossible to provide securities to its own people.

We need these people more than they need us by Sayd Razzak on 15 May 2008

Are you insane or mad? These people are more needed in India than people like Laloo, Sonia, Arjun Singh etc. It's India's honor that people like Dalai lama and Tasmila has opted to stay in a country like India. They can happily get residence permit in any civilized, developed country. We need such people more than mads like you.

Why she wants to come back? by Sagar on 15 May 2008
