"I will strive to return to the national ODI squad," Ganguly said after inaugurating the senior national women's soccer championship at the Durgachawk stadium.
Ganguly was dropped from the Indian ODI team for the ongoing tri-series in Australia.
The former Indian cricket captain received a standing ovation from the capacity crowd as he took a lap of honour of the ground, accompanied by soccer stars Bhaichung Bhutia and Jose Barreto and swimmer Bula Chowdhury.
Ganguly said he was happy to be in the industrial township. "I had received invitation to come here earlier also, but could not make it. Today, I am very happy".
Twenty three teams are participating in the tournament to be played in four venues - Kolaghat, Haldia, Mahishadal and Tamluk in the East Midnapore district of West Bengal.

Have your say on the latest off-field stoush between Australia and India. I grew up playing cricket on dirt roads in my home town in rural Queensland with my brothers, neighbours and mates. If someone spat the dummy - threatening to take his bat and ball home - the rest of us would sool our Queensland blue cattle dogs onto the bloke, just to make sure he went home that little bit quicker. Are the dogs barking for India? In fact, are all international cricketers becoming dummy-spitters?In the past, India has threatened to go home from countries such as South Africa, and this summer they've constantly repeated those threats since the Symonds-Harbhajan blow-up during the second Test. Whatever version of events you believe from that incident, Symonds was the abuse victim. Harbhajan the abuser.Records prove India is the worst behaved cricket team in the world.
