I'll tell PM to take risk on N-deal again and again: Rahul

Amethi, July 16: Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday hailed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for showing ‘vision, tenacity and leadership’ over the Indo-US nuclear deal issue and said the accord is worth taking a ‘risk’.

A week ahead of the government's trust vote, he strongly defended the nuclear deal, saying it will be beneficial for the country in the long run.

Questioning opposition to the deal, Gandhi said it was similar to the criticism his late father Rajiv Gandhi faced when he introduced computers in the late 80s.

"At that time all thought it (decision to introduce computers) was ridiculous. The argument given that time was how will it benefit farmers," he said at a press conference in Amethi.

Gandhi said the Prime Minister has shown ‘vision, tenacity and leadership’ by deciding to go ahead with the nuclear deal.

"If the nuclear deal involves risk, I will tell the Prime Minister to take this risk again and again," he said.

Gandhi said, "The nuclear deal is fundamental for India's future. It is fundamental for energy, the power situation here (Uttar Pradesh). It is fundamental for the nuclear industry. It's important for India to become a large player. No right thinking person will argue that it is bad for the country."

He said across the political divide there was support for the deal.

"There are people in BJP and other parties who are 100 per cent for the deal. I don't understand why there are people opposing the deal. So if somebody argues that it is bad, then there is a feeling it is political."

"It is not only Rahul Gandhi but every young person in the country who is bound to support the deal because it is going to change the future face of the country," he said.

When it was pointed out that this had led Congress to align with Samajwadi Party, a party it had opposed earlier and the new alignment may hurt Congress in the long run, he said, "My point is, we will stake whatever we can."

On the opposition to the nuclear deal, Gandhi said the telecom and IT revolutions- launched by his late father Rajiv Gandhi-- in the 1980s had faced similar opposition.

Gandhi said, "The deal would make India a global player in the nuclear industry. The situation today is the same like the 1980s when the telecom revolution was set in, followed by the computer and IT revolutions."

"I remember during my childhood when my father was doing this (ushering in the computer and IT revolution) people used to say it is completely ridiculous. Various arguments were given. Some said how do the farmers gain from it and today almost everyone has a computer. And some have it on their watches," he said.

The scion of the Gandhi family said he considered the nuclear deal ‘fundamental’ for the country as it goes into future.

"It is a landmark for the energy situation and the nuclear industry is going to benefit all of us in employment, especially for the youth," he said.

He praised the Prime Minister for his stand on the nuclear deal. "I am proud that Manmohan Singh has given the country vision, tenacity and leadership. Today you may say that it only involves generation of 3 percent of energy but you never know our bright scientists would make it 70 per cent. I believe in this," he said.

"The young leaders across the party line who have talked to him have been supportive of the deal. I have talked to many young leaders across the parties. They support the deal and are convinced about it. They say they don't understand why their leadership is opposed to it," he added.

CONGRESS FEARS IDEOLOGY OF SRI RAM??? by DESH PREMI on 19 Jul 2008

CONGRESS IS AFRAID OF HINDUS SO EVEN A SIKH JAT CRIMINAL IS GIVEN Z PLUS SECURITY BY CHIEF MINISTER BHUPINDER SINGH HOODA IN HARYANA, TO CONVERT HINDUS TO A NEW RELIGION FOUNDED BY A MUSLIM IN SIRSA. THE SO CALLED FAKE JAT GODMAN HAS CRIMINAL BACKGROUND AND CLOSE RELATIONS WITH KILLED SIKH TERRORISTS. BUT CONGRESS ALWAYS HELP ANYONE WHO CAN CONVERT HINDUS. Interdependence of nations by Kurian Thalachirakuzhy on 18 Jul 2008

There was a time when countries wanted independence from the colonial powers. The present trend is not independence but interdependence, in this period of globalization. The world became so small and cannot exist isolated from the Community of nations. By making a necleal deal we are not going to be a dependent country on America. We have to depend on other countries including America and America has to depend on India in many things. let us accept the reality of the need of mutual dependence. We don't want India to be isolated like Cuba and N. Korea in the international community of nations.

"Gandhi said the telecom and IT revolutions- launched by his late father Rajiv Gandhi-- in the 1980s had faced similar opposition" dear Mr Rahul Gandhi...no deal was inked with US for ushering IT revolution.US did not insist on any conditions for ushering in IT revolution

rahul is visionary by Dipankar deb barman on 17 Jul 2008

while india desperately need power for its immense growth in economy it so ashamed that partyman like l.k Advani opposing it.Regarding rahuls comment he is more clear in his vision .his father plunged into the criticism by LEFT parties when he introduced computer in late 80's now we see the comprehensiveness of computer.left ruling west bengal, kerala, tripura are not they using computer now, don't those state needs power to boost their economy? so why this drama created by left parties? every knows the reason behind this , they dont want countries progress.Rahul might be dropout may not have political experience but this is sure no one can justify indian politics by experience it needs perfect guts and visionary thinking . peopole say rahul is too young for indian politics then remember young fellow needs one step to bow down conventional outdated thinking.

What is Rahul? Highschool drop out !! by RAJ MK on 17 Jul 2008

What is he ????

Left did the Right thing by Dipak Bose on 17 Jul 2008

Rahul is just as naive as his father. He has no pilitical education, no kinowledge of history or international situation. He took it as a prestige issue, but nothing to do with the country's interests. If there will be nuclear attacks on India Rahul Gandhi can escape to Italy, but what about the millions of people. Without any nuclear weapons, that is exactly what the Americans want for India, India will be blackmailed by both China and Pakistan. This is the issue, not the electricity.

Left did waht?? by SRamans on 17 Jul 2008

Agreement never says you can not develop nuclear bomb. Some of the plants are exempted from IAEA inspection. Why you people are big issue, like chinese comrades. They do not want to get throught this agreement as directed by Mr.Junda. Rajiv was naive, but IT and telecom revolutions are brought by him. What LK Advani and Vajbaye did? Can you name it??

Idiot by Subhash on 17 Jul 2008

Ignorance is bliss; just let us know how many nuclear wars have been fought?

fools paradise by Common Indian on 17 Jul 2008

So superpowers are stockpiling the N-arsenal for nothing? And US is afraid of Iran for N-capability of nothing? If there are no chances for N-war then lets distribute the N-technology freely to all. No "safeguards" of any kind required .May be AQ khan has done service to the humanity, in opinion of subhash.

Nuclear war by Danda on 17 Jul 2008

Are you saying that there will not be nuclear war in future ? USA had condideres using nuclear weapons in Korea, Vietnam and also China if China could have won out right in Korea. Who can give us a written guarantee that China and Pakistan will not use nuclear weapons even if India is winning a war against them ? Pakistan was thinking to use nuclear weapons during Kargil war. You are right ignorance is bliss and live like ostrich with face buried deep in sand.

N-deal and Rahul Gandhi by MOHAN DADDIKAR on 17 Jul 2008

Rahul gandhi can afford to express his loyallty to principles and bear the risk of loosing political power because his surname will ensure success in coming elections. But this is not the case with other congressmen, who are sure to loose their deposits in the elections and loose the golden opportunity of enjoying enormous political power and safe source of minting money.

elections by Wow on 17 Jul 2008

"his surname will ensure success in coming elections", also his white skin. Remember, Indians think whites are superior to Indians.

Advani and Rahul by Anakin Skywalker on 17 Jul 2008

Letters written by BJP supporters are really entertaining. I agree with them on fact that Rahul is not expert in this subject. According to me Mr.Advani is expert in nuclear deal. He holds Ph. D in nuclear science from University of California. Mr. Advani has published over 1000 research papers on various topics in nuclear science in international journals. He has chaired many international conferences on nuclear science. In fact while he was touring during rath yatra, inside rath he used to write his thesis work. Rahul is so dumb that he ate bhel puri on the research papers thrown by Advani.

nuclear experts by Wow on 17 Jul 2008

But Congress supportes are dumb. In other words you are saying that Rahul and his mama are world authorities on nuclear science. How much Dr. Manmohan Singh knows about nuclear subject ? Don't talk through your ass.

who closed the heavy water plant by Common Indian on 17 Jul 2008

I heard that one Heavy water plant was closed for lack of funding, while MM was finance minister? Can any enlightenedreader give the details?

Nuclear Deal and Rahul by Ashok on 17 Jul 2008

Agree that Rahul is not an expert on nuclear deal, but how many readers who are making big remarks are nuclear experts. You do not need to be an expert of all the subjects. One can not be but one should have a clear vision and ability to take the nation forward with that vision. I am not a congress fan nor Rahul fan but clearly this deal looks to be beneficial to India. There can not be anything which can be risk free but then one has to analyze and act accordingly. Though, Rahul is not an expert but for sure Anil Kakodkar and Abdul Kalam know better than all of us put together including Advanis and Karats etc.Let us not oppose just for opposing the govt. It is high time not only the politicians but even the general public should rise above the party political prejudices and support or oppose the deal for its own merits.

I am citizen of democratic nation by Common indian on 17 Jul 2008

irrespective of being nuclear expert, I am common citizen of a democratic nation. I believe PM shall take decision , after consensus of parliament and shall not be arrogant to throw the parliamentary norms to dust bin.

n-deal by Quottrochhi on 17 Jul 2008

"but how many readers who are making big remarks are nuclear experts.", you are not so why you are talking like an expert ? If you are not expert then how you say deal is good for India ? Just because Rahul says it is good ?

n-deal by SRaman on 17 Jul 2008

So you are an expert to say "no", better than Dr.Kalam or National Security Adivisors of both congress and BJP regime, or better than our atomic Energy cheif????

Global support for Rahul by Ravi chinna on 17 Jul 2008

Rahul baba, there are British, canadian, Auatralian MPs, and USA Congressmen, who support INDO-US civil N-deal 100% but will they vote for your govt on 22nd to save your govt. just like millions of people come to your rally but do they vote for you?

rahul clearance by aks on 17 Jul 2008

It is most unfortunate for a country where jailed Hon'ble MPs vote for to decide fate of a Govt. In addition, immature leaders like Rahuls,Lalus and similar others get preference over learned and patriotic citizens and leaders in media coverage. Everyboby knows that desired stories can be very easily planted in any of newspaper or electronic media.

Rahul Ganddhi by Pratap Nair on 17 Jul 2008

Mr. Rahul Gandhi may be right in saying that the Nuclear deal is good for the country. However what knowledge does he have on nuclear issues? Does he even know how many nuclear plants the country has and the capacity generated? Has he any idea of what a Heavy water plant is or what is Deuterium? He is just echoing the Congress party views and all he knows is that the Congress is pro nuclear deal. Let all right thinking Indians be fully aware that Mr. Rahul has an impressive think tank backing him and he has to depend on them for whatever he says. He has neither the capacity nor the will to open his mouth lest he says something silly. All he does is repeat whatever the think tank tells him to say. The nedia including TV is giving a lot of unjustified importance to what Mr. Rahul Gandhi says. However they should know that it his impressive think tank that is responsible for what he says.

Poor deal- get a better one by demoCracy Where Artthou on 17 Jul 2008

Baba congress is risking the country's future and security on this badly negotiated deal. not your throne. In 2 yrs singh could not explain or show why this deal is so good for us, we can see its good for russia, france and US. we sign away our rights to nuclear testing and weapons while china and pakistan sell them to every mad mullah, france and russia offload their slow moving stock of n reactors that no one seems to be buying (ask US how many n reactors do they have and what do they do with the radioactive waste-water and mineral?)

Nuclear or not clear by arun on 17 Jul 2008

Can Rahul Baba tell us how nuclear energy is used to make elctrical energy. I will grant him some points if he can answer this question. I am sure he believe that you connect two wire to radio active Uranium and wow you get electricity.

N-Deal - The way forward by Viajy on 17 Jul 2008

The govenrment of India should have held a referandum in India on the N-deal. Directly asking people what they want, instead of depending on the Commies and opportunistic corrupt political parties. If the people of India had voted for the deal, I am sure the opposing political parties would dare not go against the wishes of the people. In the end it is the comman man who will have to suffer with power cuts. The rich and corrupt don't have to worry about it.

I agree by arun on 17 Jul 2008

While I tatally agree with Vijay but I regret to say that in country like India where Shibus, Shahbuddins, Amars, Lalus, Gowdas all these decide major issues therecan be no referendum. Why our country was divided by connivance mainly of Nehru without any referendum and that too not in the country but even within the party. Can Congress today say that they were in support of parttion and keeping J

Referundum are elections by demoCracy Where Artthou on 17 Jul 2008

Referendum is best by calling elections. Why open a bazaar and auction MP's to stay in power for 3 months extra.

Mr RAHUL, YOU WILL BE WITH US FOR A LONG TIME TO ANSWER QUESTIONS UNLIKE THE OLDIES by AK Nair on 17 Jul 2008

The power generated by nuclear plant is known to be most expensive which is unaffordable to average Indian ie “AAM ADMI”. The NUCLEAR cartel is more closely knit than the OPEC and can squeeze India perpetually after India invests Billions of Dollars in Nuclear Reactors by refusing to supply fuel rendering all the power generation capacity useless. What will happen to the N- power plants if all the nuclear supplier group countries led by USA threaten cutting off N-FUEL SUPPLY unless KASHMIR which they perceive to be potential nuclear flash point is nutralised by granting it independence? What if the Islamic Terrorists demand such a deal to let go off USA which is already facing a “VIETNAM” like situation in AFGHANISTAN? It may seem farfetched but wasn’t the same method adopted by the EAST INDIA COMPANY while subjugating Indians? India has an abundance of water resource to generate HYDRO-ELECTRIC power with half the investment on N- POWER with additional benefit of controlling floods and improving irrigation. Then why the N-DEAL? If nuclear POWER IS panacea FOR POWER SHORTAGE WHY HAS USA NOT ESTABLISHED ANY N-POWER PLANT AFTER 1976????

Response by Vishal on 17 Jul 2008

Mr. Nair. You are doing a lot of "what will happens....". This is the best possible deal for India, not even China has what we are getting. Our dependence on Oil must be reduced. The people who refuse to see the good side of this deal and only focus on the bad side, are clearly people with intention to keep India on the lower grade on the world scence. This deal would raise India's stature all over the world.

n-deal by Mulayam on 17 Jul 2008

But you have not answered that what will happen if NSG refuses to supply uranium or increase prices, which they will. All Congress supporters can say is deal is good. BJP has never said deal is bad but why it is considered treason if people are worried about non-nuclear concerns which are applicable to the nuclear deal.

Why the media is kind to them by arun on 17 Jul 2008

The media has never grilled the lady and her son. Let them open their mouth in public forum and let people ask them questions. Then we will know how knowlegeble the brat is. Let this person stand for any competative exam and then let him pass through the Arjun's trap of reservation then he will know. Some time I do envy this boy. With no qualification whatsoever he talks on world issue and we listen like fools.
