Three days after announcement of her candidature from Charkhari constituency of Bundelkhand, former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh Uma Bharti on Saturday said she is the heiress of Kalyan Singh — former UP chief minister and BJP’s erstwhile “Hindutva face”.

Addressing a press conference in Lucknow, she said, “I am not the replacement or substitute of Kalyan Singhji. I am the heiress of Kalyan Singhji.”

Uma said Kalyan is a great and tall leader and he is like a father figure for her. “But this daughter is a step ahead of that father.”

Uma claimed she was not in the race for BJP’s chief ministerial candidate for UP.

During her 15-minute address, Uma targeted Congress national general secretary Rahul Gandhi for calling her an “outsider” in UP. “Rahul has forgotten that his grandfather, grandmother, father and mother contested in elections from the constituencies which were not in their native state,” she said. Rahul was trying to the divert people’s attention from the issues of development and corruption by calling her an “outsider”, she said.

Uma said a Congress leader called her “Putna (demoness)” on Friday. “Rahul must condemn the derogatory remark made by his party leader and should personally apologise for it.”

Uma said no BJP leader will speak more on the issue but voters would give Rahul a reply in the elections.

Reacting over the statement of Rahul that elephants in Lucknow consume the money meant for development, Uma said, “Why UPA government sends the money when it knows about the corruption prevailing here?”
