Washington, February 23: Barack Obama, Democratic front-runner for the US Presidential nomination, sees Mahatma Gandhi as an inspiration and has a portrait of the apostle of peace in his office to remind him that ordinary people can do extraordinary things.

"In my life, I have always looked to Mahatma Gandhi as an inspiration, because he embodies the kind of transformational change that can be made when ordinary people come together to do extraordinary things," he wrote in a yet to be published article in the ethnic India Abroad newspaper.

"That is why his portrait hangs in my Senate office; to remind me that real results will not just come from Washington, they will come from the people," he said in the article, excerpts of which were provided in a write-up on Friday.

That is why, he said, "I am proud to have the longstanding support of so many Indian Americans in all aspects of my campaign (for party nomination for the post of the President), as well as the endorsements of leading elected Indian American lawmakers."

Wanted: American President by Funky P on 25 Feb 2008

Funky P Quote of the Day: Wanted: American President The best candidate is the one that inspires the American people. The one who is about us and not just about themselves. The one who is not just for some of us but for all of us. The solution is for all of us to "up our game". We need a manager who can get the most out of the American team. The most important issue is to have a president who can get the country excited about a political purpose. We need another "New Deal" we need a "Change". Does anybody know FDR's proven accomplishments before he pulled the country out of the Great Depression." Maybe HE just came in with inspiration and a good plan and the American people believed and executed. Did Abraham Lincoln have any proven accomplishments before the presidency? What do you know, a good plan and a bunch of words but with action from the American people "changed" our world forever. In our search for a great president we are also searching for our better selves. We Americans are at our best when our spirits are stirred up. Our past great presidents are ones that caused us to do more than we thought possible. Finally, the only test that matters: Which candidate will inspire us to do more good than we think we are capable of?

Gandhian inspiration by U N Han on 24 Feb 2008

Gandhian inspiration in the present context is misplaced. A non violent movement started by Gandhiji during Indian independence became violent and lacs of people were killed and rendered homeless. The impact is still felt by way of skirmishes across the border.

Obama and Islam by jay on 23 Feb 2008

Barack Hussein Obam was born of a Muslim father, raised by a Muslim stepfather, and received his first education at a Muslim school. Then he subsequently went to a Catholic school in Jakarta before living with his mothers parents back in Honolulu makes no difference. In the eyes of Muslims, he originally was a Muslim. How can he not be in those eyes, with a Koranic first name and his middle name that of the grandson of Mohammed? For him to become a Christian means he is an apostate. There is no dispute among either ancient or modern Moslem scholars that under Islamic law One who turns his back on Islam, an apostate, must be put to death.Radical preacher Zakir Naik says Apostate deserve death as per Islam. Let respect Shri Obama's viewpoints by Vidhur on 23 Feb 2008

Let respect Shri Obama's viewpoints. Every person take ideas and characters of other persons, whom they feel as role-model. Look Obama's background, he came from ordinary family. But, always remember what Swami Vivekananda says, 'Every atman/soul is potentially Divine'. This is our Eternal Vedanta Philosophy. Dream, dream my fellow Bharatiya: each of you can be a great leaders in your choosen field. I wish Shri Obama best of luck.

Mahatma Gandhi is just a brand name for india by Ripu Singh on 23 Feb 2008

This is one of the stereotype lie everybody speaks when they talk about india. Mahatama Gandhi is just a brand name for india, nothing else. We had alot bigger and quality heros in India such as Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar, Subash Chandar Bose etc but the problem is they are not the brand names for indian image abroad. We all know Mahatma Gandhi had alot of flaws in his movement and he was favorite to british/west to hang on in inida. the real figters were troublesome and west didn't give them due importance in media and history. He gave word "Harijan" which a well informed indian see as a first racist word which made an big impact in society. Anybody saying Mahatma Gandhi as a role model is practically worthless comment. Obama needs to look beyond the brand name and choose real personality to follow.

guru - r u really? by KM on 23 Feb 2008

Do you believe everything you read on the net? If so, check out www.news.faithfreedom.org - How does one decide which one of the two sites (gandhism.net or www.news.faithfreedom.org) is run by mischief makers?

gand- di by guru on 24 Feb 2008

hey KM, I checked that one, it was infact run by so called mischief makers. But I went further and read, Gandhi was racist when it came to the South African blacks. He wanted separate treatment for the Indians than the blacks and not at par with the whites. I know not everything online is true but if you read his writings from his imprisonment, you shall be enlightened as well.

Posturing and Propaganda by Praveen Tyagi on 23 Feb 2008

Senator Obama seems to be inspired by all good /great things in the world. That coming from a senator who wanted to invade Pakistan because Pakistan did not clean up the mess created by USA. Not sure how sincere he is in his admiration and inspiration. It takes more than good speeches to come anywhere close to Mahatma Gandhi(The greatest human being to have walked on this planet). The Senator from Illinois seems to be all about hope and speeches and just that. If he were to actually believe in Mahatma he would have been an altogether different person. Clearly he is just posturing to win over some Indian Amerian votes. Nothing less nothing more.....

Ethical Governance by SKannath on 23 Feb 2008

Barack Obama has whole hearted support of Indian Democrats, in US and India, he brings that freshness that Americans and the world is been looking for.

Obama by J.M.Manchanda on 23 Feb 2008

Well, Gandhi did show that unarmed masses could make a strong imperial power uncomfortable enough to leave. But he was also a strong proponent of peace and universal brotherhood. If Obama is genuinely inspired by Gandhi and wishes to toe his line, he would have to get troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan; sign the Kyoto protocol and stop US from playing the global policeman.Hanging Gandhi's portrait is simply not enough (most goverment offices in India do it!);one has to follow him in thoughts and actions. All the best to Obama!
