"In my life, I have always looked to Mahatma Gandhi as an inspiration, because he embodies the kind of transformational change that can be made when ordinary people come together to do extraordinary things," he wrote in a yet to be published article in the ethnic India Abroad newspaper.
"That is why his portrait hangs in my Senate office; to remind me that real results will not just come from Washington, they will come from the people," he said in the article, excerpts of which were provided in a write-up on Friday.
That is why, he said, "I am proud to have the longstanding support of so many Indian Americans in all aspects of my campaign (for party nomination for the post of the President), as well as the endorsements of leading elected Indian American lawmakers."

Funky P Quote of the Day: Wanted: American President The best candidate is the one that inspires the American people. The one who is about us and not just about themselves. The one who is not just for some of us but for all of us. The solution is for all of us to "up our game". We need a manager who can get the most out of the American team. The most important issue is to have a president who can get the country excited about a political purpose. We need another "New Deal" we need a "Change". Does anybody know FDR's proven accomplishments before he pulled the country out of the Great Depression." Maybe HE just came in with inspiration and a good plan and the American people believed and executed. Did Abraham Lincoln have any proven accomplishments before the presidency? What do you know, a good plan and a bunch of words but with action from the American people "changed" our world forever. In our search for a great president we are also searching for our better selves. We Americans are at our best when our spirits are stirred up. Our past great presidents are ones that caused us to do more than we thought possible. Finally, the only test that matters: Which candidate will inspire us to do more good than we think we are capable of?
aamir what votes you are talking about?0.1% or even less Indian voters can not change the results of USA election, think before you FART u fool
What ever you are Mr. Obama, but remember to keep your promise to invade Pakistan the hub of terrorists
Gandhian inspiration in the present context is misplaced. A non violent movement started by Gandhiji during Indian independence became violent and lacs of people were killed and rendered homeless. The impact is still felt by way of skirmishes across the border.
Is he appealing to Indian-American community for votes that he knows and recongnises an Indian?
Obama is the beacon of hope for change.Like Buddha ,Gandhi is an inspiring icon else where and not in India.India is now run by Thackereys,Rahul Gandhis,Karunanidhis.Where is the time for Mahatma Gandhi.
Thank you Obama, that you are not inspired by Osama, after all you are a true Christian, but some fool thinks you are a muslim
Barack Hussein Obam was born of a Muslim father, raised by a Muslim stepfather, and received his first education at a Muslim school. Then he subsequently went to a Catholic school in Jakarta before living with his mothers parents back in Honolulu makes no difference. In the eyes of Muslims, he originally was a Muslim. How can he not be in those eyes, with a Koranic first name and his middle name that of the grandson of Mohammed? For him to become a Christian means he is an apostate. There is no dispute among either ancient or modern Moslem scholars that under Islamic law One who turns his back on Islam, an apostate, must be put to death.Radical preacher Zakir Naik says Apostate deserve death as per Islam. Let respect Shri Obama's viewpoints. Every person take ideas and characters of other persons, whom they feel as role-model. Look Obama's background, he came from ordinary family. But, always remember what Swami Vivekananda says, 'Every atman/soul is potentially Divine'. This is our Eternal Vedanta Philosophy. Dream, dream my fellow Bharatiya: each of you can be a great leaders in your choosen field. I wish Shri Obama best of luck.
** Eeshswar-Allaha-tero naam, Sab ko Sanmati De Bhagwan**, whosoever has coined this word from his inner voice is beyond ordinary- That's the true spirit of being a Mahatma
This is one of the stereotype lie everybody speaks when they talk about india. Mahatama Gandhi is just a brand name for india, nothing else. We had alot bigger and quality heros in India such as Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar, Subash Chandar Bose etc but the problem is they are not the brand names for indian image abroad. We all know Mahatma Gandhi had alot of flaws in his movement and he was favorite to british/west to hang on in inida. the real figters were troublesome and west didn't give them due importance in media and history. He gave word "Harijan" which a well informed indian see as a first racist word which made an big impact in society. Anybody saying Mahatma Gandhi as a role model is practically worthless comment. Obama needs to look beyond the brand name and choose real personality to follow.
Walks, Talks and Lies like a True RSS pracharak...Live in Peace you and your bigots as your ideals did kill one of the greatest soul on Earth..
What Brand are you? A fictitious Bramd? Before you blabber, read the Autobiography of Gandhi, without prejudicial mind and pre conceived ideas. Gandhi was a human being but amonst the Legends he was the Greatest that ever walked God's Planet.Get that staight, he was true apostle. With such ignorance, you are not worthy to criticie this greatman.
Do you believe everything you read on the net? If so, check out www.news.faithfreedom.org - How does one decide which one of the two sites (gandhism.net or www.news.faithfreedom.org) is run by mischief makers?
hey KM, I checked that one, it was infact run by so called mischief makers. But I went further and read, Gandhi was racist when it came to the South African blacks. He wanted separate treatment for the Indians than the blacks and not at par with the whites. I know not everything online is true but if you read his writings from his imprisonment, you shall be enlightened as well.
Whenever there is Greatness there are mischief makers to throw dirt at...same goes for these 2 sites...Gandhi a true Hindu was disliked by RSS bigots and FaithFreedom supposedly run by Ex-Muslim is trying to throw dirt at Islam....Bring it on both Islam and Hinduism have Billion folowers...trouble makers will eventualy shown the doors of hell anyway...
Ms Colleen, Clubbing Indira Gandhi with Mahatma Gandhi would be like clubbing Saddam Hussein Al Trikiti with Barack Hussein Obama. Indira is a witch!
mr obamagood to hear that an indian has inspired you mrs indira gandhi also was dynamic personalityi am proud to be an indianmrs colleen traynor
Senator Obama seems to be inspired by all good /great things in the world. That coming from a senator who wanted to invade Pakistan because Pakistan did not clean up the mess created by USA. Not sure how sincere he is in his admiration and inspiration. It takes more than good speeches to come anywhere close to Mahatma Gandhi(The greatest human being to have walked on this planet). The Senator from Illinois seems to be all about hope and speeches and just that. If he were to actually believe in Mahatma he would have been an altogether different person. Clearly he is just posturing to win over some Indian Amerian votes. Nothing less nothing more.....
Barack Obama has whole hearted support of Indian Democrats, in US and India, he brings that freshness that Americans and the world is been looking for.
Well, Gandhi did show that unarmed masses could make a strong imperial power uncomfortable enough to leave. But he was also a strong proponent of peace and universal brotherhood. If Obama is genuinely inspired by Gandhi and wishes to toe his line, he would have to get troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan; sign the Kyoto protocol and stop US from playing the global policeman.Hanging Gandhi's portrait is simply not enough (most goverment offices in India do it!);one has to follow him in thoughts and actions. All the best to Obama!
